Honestly I was surprised with this book and love it like the Karmazov Brothers! At first I was like why would they call the Prince an idiot but it makes sense in the way that he wasn’t our modern version of an idiot but a person who was struggling mentally but had the heart and compassion. Also, he was not close to the high society that he was supposed to be raised in . I actually would have liked the first draft! Reminds me a bit of Brothers Karamazov.

Did you tear up at the part where Sonya died? I cried myself when I read that part in the biography. Especially with all the quotes from diaries of his wife and his letters. I felt so terrible for him. They did have a second daughter later. But unfortunately, the first child didn't survive. It was a really sad part.

I think you mean this part? It's from this website: rushist.com/index.php/literary-articles/4169-dostoevskij-idiot-istoriya-sozdaniya

To understand "The Idiot" (1869) one must read "The Insulted and Humiliated" (1861) as that is a more accurate version of what actually took place. It even has a child dying before he even has his own child. "Dostoevsky in Love: An Intimate Life" by Alex Christofi.

Funny, at 08:14 in the video you talk about Dostoevsky having had a fall coat in the winter and his future wife telling him that he’ll be sick - I think (and could be wrong) that Prince Mischkin was also wearing some coat or other clothing not suitable for Russian weather, when he came from Switzerland :D

9:28 Dostoevsky stayed in Europe for 4 years, like the Prince 😏

To hear that Victor Hugo's *'Jean Valjean'* 'looked over the shoulder' of Fyodor Dostoevsky is interesting - same for *'Alonso Quixano'* of La Mancha - who's a ridiculous sight, but striking for taking every moment serious, according to _a noble imagination_ . Why do You think did F. refer to Pafnuty, the abbot of Borovsk of Tartar descent ? Does it relate to a conflict of _'rule like a tyrant or die on the cross_ ?'

@@ReligionOfSacrifice "It even has a child dying before he even has his own child." I recently glanced over his vita again and realized the _series_ of lost offspring, Dostoevsky had suffered before he died. Thanks for the commendations. If You ever pick up a possible relation to the abbot of Borovsk, feel free to reply.

@@christophmahler, I am now reading two Dostoevsky books: "Netochka Nezvanova" meaning nameless nobody & "Demons" which seems like the correct version of one of his more famous stories. This might finish my reading of his works.

On a serious note, I greatly appreciate that Dostoyevsky was concerned with quality while feeling pressure to produce something given his financial circumstance and the tragedy of his daughter’s death

To understand "The Idiot" (1869) one must read "The Insulted and Humiliated" (1861) as that is a more accurate version of what actually took place. "The Idiot" was not suppose to be Fyodor Dostoevsky (having seizures, like our author) per the first version because that is not reality. Alyosha from "The Insulted and Humiliated" is "The Idiot" who is Fyodor's opposition, but making Fyodor as "The Idiot" so that the opposing man can be the killer of the female was the new change for the second version. Fyodor is "The Insulted and Humiliated" as his fiancee goes instead for "The Idiot." Reality is Fyodor was never engaged to this woman, but that is how it felt and so both stories is about this same girl. The first being more accurate, while the second is less accurate, but more famous. The true story is the girl never was interested in Fyodor because he has seizures. Sort of like the girl between his two wives, or his first wife. Two books in my top 5 books of all time. 1) “The Insulted and Humiliated” by Fyodor Dostoevsky 4) "The Idiot" by Fyodor Dostoevsky and a book to understand our author more... "Dostoevsky in Love: An Intimate Life" by Alex Christofi But the girl was a call girl and there was a lot more than three guys going after the girl. For me "The Idiot" is amazing and more powerful, but the first book is better for being more accurate or real feeling. One ought to read "The Insulted and Humiliated" if they really love "The Idiot" like the way I did. I finished "The Idiot" and it was my favorite book until "Verbal Behavior" and "The Holy Bible" became better books to my way of thinking. Now I have just read "The Insulted and Humiliated" and it has gone straight to the top and is only under "The Holy Bible" which isn't on the list as it has 40 authors all inspired by Yahweh.
