Politicians that actually look at the facts and use pragmatic critical thinking? I think those can be found in the past, it's sad really. They will wait till everything is full scale before the do that. Measure twice and death by a thousand cuts, then put a red tape band-aid on it.

Got some bad news for you cobalt is also used in the petrochemical industry to clean the fuel that goes to run your petrol/ diesel car. So think of that every time you burn a gallon of petrol / diesel you are consuming more cobalt over time than is used in a car battery. And remember once the battery is made that’s it. But of corse they forget to mention that. So be careful what you want banning. The one good thing is battery chemistry is improving all the time so the likes of cobalt and other metals will be reduced or replaced over time.

I kind of wanted to know the process of how they are made. IOW, from the moment the cobalt is mine, then refined, then transported to the factory to be extruded (yadda, yadda, yadda) into the actual physical battery-this with all the other materials as well. Though the geo-political aspects of making these batteries is interesting, the title is misleading because there is no discussion as to the actual manufacturing process of making these batteries.

Cobalt, Nickel and Manganese are not a variant of Lithium. They all are different chemical elements.

More than 2/3 of EV battery sold and made in China are the LiFePO4 type of battery, which does not contain any Ni or Co. So, I doubt some of the statement and judgement in this video about this part...

You only seem to highlight the worst case - like ignoring the fact that 60% lithium comes from Australia.

The writing is in the wall. People cannot expect to consume energy without extracting something from the ground. We want things now and will sacrifice our mothers to get it

I wonder what the EV manufacturers are planning long term? The US didn't have gas stations everywhere when gas cars were growing in popularity. Demand caused the change. So, what can we expect the EV demand do to the supply of batteries? The scientists are demonstrating new battery technologies all the time. Maybe a new tech will help the manufacturers out of the problems stated in this video.

They're going to use fossil fuels to dig many different minerals in search for the magic mineral that's not guaranteed to even be there.?! All the while continuing very harmful to the earth practices just to keep us from polluting the earth.. Okay.... "Gotcha" ((..Sarcastically said..))

So switch from petrol reduces air pollution and gets rid of engine and transmission oil changes right? But EV's look like they do more harm based on the processing of the raw materials.

Yup. You are exactly right! Not only is it a dirty process but look where you would be getting a charge from. A charging station is hooked to the usual power grid which is run by "fossil fuels". Electric cars are not going to save us! Watch if u will "Planet of the Humans".

The battery only contains 10 kilograms of lithium and 15 kilograms of cobalt, which are very small. But gasoline needs to be made from crude oil, where extraction of the latter is more harmful than lithium and cobalt mining.

Child labor isn't evil if done correctly. My first job was at 12, and I worked a very limited number of hours per week and learned a lot about on-the-job responsibility.

You should look up videos of lithium mines.

What i don't understand is; EV cars are considered eco friendly but there battery's are made of non-Renewable mineral like cobalt.

For now. Lithium batteries are very new (if comparing to Lead acid batteries). Battery developments are continuing. A long term solution battery may not involve lithium at all, but we need to start somewhere.

Agriculture, education and religion

Fundamentally, there is not enough Lithium in the world to make any more than single-digit demand of EVs. Lithium is found in basically 4 countries, in very dry areas. Lithium mining is extremely water-intensive, and prone to ground water pollution for centuries to come. There is no such thing as ethical cobalt. There is no such thing as green lithium. And that's before we even touch on nickel.

There is ethical cobalt and green lithium. Ethical cobalt is made from the refinement of certain metals after extraction, when cobalt would be a waste product. And green lithium? DLE (Direct lithium extraction) is starting to be used to produce the lithium needed for batteries. And DLE can even be used on seawater. The ocean contains 230 billion tons of lithium, enough to make batteries for basically anything.

Okay but serious and literally and actually: if the entire world used solely electric everything: Stove, ovens, cars, fridge and say all of gasoline/propane/petroleum didn’t exist anymore, wouldn’t we fry up the entire world? There has to be a catch and the possibility of fire has to rise dramatically? To every solution, there’s always another risk. I’m not trying to be a downer. I’m just trying to understand fully what exactly why we are trying to go full electric.

Why can't the electric vehicle companies develop a division to get the electric car battery materials instead of using 3rd party companies and or come up with something chemically the same through Chemistry in the U.S. Like I think some vitamins are made that way or think of all the types of man made plastics we have. Also why not build more actually solar panels into the electric vehicles to help them recharge with the FREE sun. I am talking eye appealing top parts such as truck, roof and hoods. Then maybe the vehicle owner may think a little and goes a step more putting solar panels on their homes so it would not cost them anything to fuel up their electric vehicle. It still is a FREE sun out there and it is there every day maybe a little dimmer on some that is what the batteries in that system are for to hold that charge until needed by the ac / dc inverters to power your house and or car. You may not pay any electric bill any more by having solar maybe still a little But once the solar panels are paid off their yours and if you have enough that is Free energy for you now for your house and car FREE. from that FREE sun thanks sun right. Here is a thought for you chemist and auto makers. I think if you think a lot and have ideas that is some what how the world and business go around. With new or better ideas. And of course trying the new ideas. this is 2022 where would we be now with out electric or even the light bulb and lights at night.. I read once that it took Edison 100 some tries to finally get the regular light bulb to work right. It took the right kind of wire or filament to light up right, 100 tries or so. The thought for the chemist is we humans are at a temperature of around 98.6 Degrees F. So is there a chemical that can boil at that temp if so design and put it into a comfortable car seat that we humans would sit in to drive our vehicles. Make it so that this chemical would directly or indirectly be used to power our vehicle some how. Indirectly I would say it could exchange its heat from us to a water type of system in the vehicle to power it like a steam engine did on trains years ago. In some ways we humans are a power source with our own heat. Now I do not know if tapping into that heart source some how would be bad for us human or not I do not think so, I am not a doctor but just wondering. That I think could be a good idea. Just think of all the inventions that were past over by someone that thought O that is a stupid idea only to go by some one else that helped with it some how because they had enough vision or money or both to see what would become of it. Things such as at least the Car.

hi, i know a place in my home country. Currently no one have found the area yet. under this big mountain valley, there are many of raw lithium stone and ore there. back in the 70s i used to have a rice farm there on the side of the hill and wonder what are those weird stone. after the war i came to USA but i peeking on the place from time to time and no one have went to that forest area yet. Is there who i can contact to sell this secret or start a mining business.

The very worst part of this is the child labor and inhumane, and dangerous treatment of people. This is not a better ecological alternative to gas and oil.

Save the planet: bring back horses.

So why do they want us to switch to EV? Is it to stop the drilling?

The title is misleading. Wanted to know how and what is used to mine the minerals needed for lithium batteries, not how it’s used or manufactured to be used in EV. There was a brief comment on the environmental dangers to the mining of minerals needed but nothing in detail. Here’s below a description of how these minerals are extracted from the ground and why we will be in a worst danger to the environment: A large machine is required to move 500 tons of earth/ ore which will be refined into one lithium car battery. It burns 900-1000 gallons of fuel in a 12-hour shift. Lithium is refined from ore using sulfuric acid. The proposed lithium mine at Thacker Pass, Nevada is estimated to require up to 75 semi-loads of sulfuric acid a day! The acid does not turn into unicorn food as AOC believes. Refining lithium has created several EPA SUPERFUND SITES. IT IS VERY TOXIC TO THE ENVIRONMENT! A battery in an electric car, let’s say an average Tesla, is made of : 25 pounds of lithium, 60 pounds of nickel, 44 pounds of manganese, 30 pounds of cobalt, 200 pounds of copper, and 400 pounds of aluminum, steel, and plastic, etc...... averaging 750-1,000 pounds of minerals, that had to be mined and processed into a battery that merely stores electricity... Electricity which is generated by oil, gas, coal, or water ( and a tiny fraction of wind and solar )... That is the truth, about the lie, of "green" energy. There’s nothing green about the "Green New Deal". You people better learn how to vote or this nonsense will continue to flow down on top of you from the throne of government upon of which you put these people. Lets look at just 7% of a current EV battery - lithium. A ton requires 500 tons of ore and 500,000 gallons of water to be refined. In 2022, Lithium production was 130,000 tons - total ore 65, million tons, and 65 BIllion gallons of water. How much CO2 to move that? If half the lithium was used for cellphones etc - you could only make 6 Million Y size battery packs. Opps there are 1.4 billion light vehicles and 100 million sold annually - So is it possible to get to 500 million lithium EVs? No and even if you could the C02 used to dig it up and process and manufature is all very non Eco friendly - this was just Lithium. There is Cobalt, manganese, copper, nickel, and a dozen other materials that need mining before your 4500 lb EV gets built.

EV's are not the answer. The carbon foot print they leave is just as high, if not higher than gas powered cars.

The only two Alkaline mines are located in China, and they are on the brink of war at this point in time. Once war does break out these mines will only be used to serve the Chinese army. Due to that happening there will be an alkaline shortage across the entire world.

Tesla claims a lot of things, but seldom deliver.

And this is how"green" cars are made... with heavy metals.... better than carbon monoxide

Currently, half of all Tesla vehicles produced are now cobalt free.

If I make a car manufacture, I’ll never make an electric car because of this. Instead, I’ll make my cars out of recycled ones, to save material and because it’s super clean to acquire. As it turns out, petrol cars are cleaner than electric cars, and does less environmental damage.

This have anything to do with Barack Obama him having ties in Indonesia from his daddy being in bed with the CIA with the assassination squads back in the 60-70’s.
