How Emirates Makes the a380 Profitable

The Airbus a380 is simultaneously a miraculous airliner and an absolute dud. It’s certainly impressive - as the world’s largest commercial jet, it carries over 500 passengers with ease in a unique double-decker configuration. But at the same time, most airlines that own the jet have bemoaned its unreliability and suspect operating economics.
However, there is one airline has become synonymous with the a380 and has consistently sung its praises. That airline is Emirates, the flag carrier for a small middle east country that’s seen a meteoric rise to become a global juggernaut. It is by far and away the largest operator of the a380, and it’s widely believed that it’s the only airline to consistently turn a profit using the jet. But what exactly is Emirates doing differently that ensures its a380s are an asset, rather than a liability? Let me explain…
If you learned something new today, leave a like and subscribe to keep learning. And, until I see you again, don't forget to look up!

I dunno maybe if you compare to tiny planes on short routes, but much less gap in comfort when compared to other long haul planes of half decent airline. I've flown it 6 times & its just kinda ok? Less noise was only standout & Emirates service (but that doesn't count). Also for some reason I've experienced the most turbulence on A380s sometimes rather rough which was odd. On the whole good, but nowhere near even business class.

The Emirates economy product feels like every other airline's economy. I've flown Emirates A340, A380 and 777 and can assure you it's the same as every other airline. In fact, Emirates were one of the first airlines to reconfigure their 777s to an awful 10 abreast seating arrangement. At the time most had a 9 abreast layout.

Having flown on both the A380 and the 787 a couple of times I was really shocked at how noisy the 787 was. The windows were also really annoying, in bright sunlight they don't block out the light enough for me to sleep easily. I suspect anyone comparing the two and finding the noise levels similar is comparing different positions in the plane, the front is always considerably quieter so the front of a 787 might closely compare with the back of an A380. Studies into the two aircraft found the 787 to be around 6dB louder on average, which actually equates to being perceived as over 25% louder.

Since then have flown London to Hong Kong - again on BA - and loved the plane. However its more for what it stood for as it's such a beast of a plane. On the long-haul route, it was quiet and relaxing but still prefer the b787 and the a350 for overall comfort. And of course, the b747 will always be the Queen of the Skies. Having said that, much like the Jumbo, it will be a sad day when we no longer see this plane at our airports and in the skies.

Actually Coby talked about average occupancy factor of Emirates versus that of world average (77 and 82%). I think Emirates uses A380 only on the routes where it knows it will be able to sell enough tickets to fill up or nearly fill up the gigantic aircraft. Emirates has no shortage of 777s and is not compelled to operate A380 everywhere all the time. I have seen a number of A380s between Dubai and Heathrow operating everyday. Likewise for other major hubs as Frankfurt, etc. So, I would tend to think that Emirates gets occupancy of more than 77% on many of its A380 routes.

The layout of the cabin into pods makes you feel you are flying in a much smaller aircraft with more personal service. Best aircraft we have ever flown on and we have been flying long haul regularly since 1976!

It's certainly thanks to UAE and Middle Eastern politics in general, but if it were truly due to Shariah law, Saudia would be the biggest player in the industry by far, not Emirates. It's second in passenger numbers but pales in comparison to the other three in global impact. The UAE put tons of money into Emirates because they wanted to diversify beyond oil to become a financial and trade center of the region and world. And they largely succeeded in that effort. A380 became my favorite plane the first time I flew in it from SFO to Frankfurt six years ago. It’s the quietest plane ever and the the smoothest flights every time. Flown in Emirates 380 from SFO to Dubai almost 10 times and always the smoothest flight. It’s huge so never felt turbulence that much. Hardly remember seatbelt sign coming on throughout the flight. Another reason Emirates use 380 on major routes is the 380 has around 80 business cleans seats compared to 777’s 30 or 32. So they make a lot more money from business compared to economy class.

Qantas A380 in 2009 when it was a new fleet. Flew Sydney to Los Angeles. I watched the behemoth taxi from the hanger to the gate and was in awe of the size. This bird is crazy big. I sat in the 2nd to last row on the R side (can't recall the row number off hand but it was insane - row 70 something, I believe) in an aisle seat. It was such a quiet plane I was speaking in a low, normal voice to my seat mates. Quantas had a beverage and cookie bar set up in the back for beverages, anytime. Plenty of lavs to pick from. It was well-crewed and the service was great. Upon landing in LAX the flight attendants allowed me to do a quick sprint through the upper cabin. I peaked into FC and that was an amazing area of pretty-much private rooms (although not as Emirates). It was a great flight and I'm glad I got to fly it as Qantas is probably going to retire the fleet, or at least that is the rumor.

By far and away the most comfortable, spacious, and smooth ride I have ever had, and I've flown on more than 10 different major airlines. If you select a seat on the top deck, it's even more spacious, as the internal geometry (walls sloping into the ceiling) prevents the seats from being packed together as tightly, and you get a sizeable "glovebox" compartment on the window seats.
