How Effective Was Germany When Invading Holland in WWII?

How Effective Was Germany When Invading Holland in WWII? How did the Germans conquer the Netherlands in May 1940? On the 10th of May 1940 the German invasion of the Netherlands started. Nazi Germany invaded the Netherlands via land and via air. Within one day they crushed through the IJssel Line and then made their way to the main Dutch line of defence: the Grebbe Line. The area in front of the Grebbe Line was flooded. The only place that wasn't was the Grebbeberg. Meanwhile German troops landed in the Dutch hinterland. Around The Hague German paratroopers (Fallshirmjäger) and airlanding troops attacked the air fields of Ypenburg, Ockenburg en Valkenburg. The Dutch defenders were overwhelmed but got themselves together and fought back. The German plan to take The Hague and capture the Dutch queen, army high command and government failed completely. During the Battle of the Grebbeberg the defenders fought hard but were driven back. The Battle of Rotterdam went on for some days now and the resistance needed to be broken in order to resume the German advance in the Netherlands. The planes were on their way and Rotterdam was bombed. The Dutch did achieve a small victory in the north of the country. The Battle of the Afsluitdijk was won by the Dutch troops, yet they had to surrender. Learn more about the Battle of the Netherlands (1940).

It’s a difficult subject to come to terms with. The defense lines were breached, Rotterdam was flattened. Capitulation was probably the only reasonable option. The cost was 5 years of suffering, the loss of much of the Jewish population and The Netherlands being used as a battlefield. The return for this sacrifice was the preservation of its beautiful cities, towns and the recovery of a great nation.

The Netherlands would have been sucked in after the Japanese attack on Dutch East India. Had the fight started in late 1941, it is likely that the fighting would have taken longer. The more so as Fokker was producing a for the time excellent fighter plane. Numbers were small in 1940 but would have been much higher two years later.

Only just found this channel, Thank you for it. My family comes from Noord Brabant (Aalst-Waalre), and I have heard so many stories of my grandparents, and what happened (My parents emigrated to NZ in the 1980's, so only stories filtered down to me), so it is nice to find this channel in english and to be able to get more of a background understanding. I sadly know little about the actual invasion, but during the occupation most of the males in family went into hiding to avoid forced labour round ups, unfortunately my Opa did not avoid it, he survived the war (thankfully because I am here), although his stories inevitably mentioned being shot in the leg helping others to escape the germans, so at least I know in some way he was still causing the germans some grief when he could. Thanks for bringing this to an english speaking audience, look forward to hearing more about this all. Regards from far away New Zealand.(I do however treat my property as dutch soil, keep the flag flying proud and tall).

Intresante video! Een bijzondere man

Hierin liep Nederland heel erg achter in 1940. Dat en tactieken, leiderschap en communicatie enzo.

With regards to the losses inflicted to the luftwaffe and the paratroopers I would say they were still significant. The paratroopers were elite forces and the loss of these were not easily replaced. As for the luftwaffe-transports; the losses over Holland were enough to hamper them for a long time in their capability to deliver supplies. Also, a lot of the junker 52 pilots were often flight-instructors. Their loss had its effect further down the line too.

  • @HistoryHustle

Interesting you point this out. See, there has been a debate whether these German paratroopers can be seen as "elite forces". Guess I have to make an episode about that. Thanks for your comment.

  • @princeofcupspoc9073

    @princeofcupspoc9073

    4 жыл бұрын

@@HistoryHustle Yeah, the word "elite" is thrown around a lot. Paratroopers received additional training in, obviously, airborne operations, but they also trained in small unit tactics and local improvisation. This differs from regular troops, who are more tied to direct orders and unit cooperation, in a more rigid command structure. Their weapons are usually assault weapons like submachine guns, but with only limited ammunition. After a few days without restock of supplies, they lose their effectiveness. See Market Garden.

I might be flawed in my reasoning but personally I think that the dutch having modern land weaponry wouldn't have made a difference because while tactically they may have had the advantage in certain situations, strategically the country stood little chance of defence from Germany because of superior German resources and the Germans holding initiative. In the case of Finland, while they lagged technologically, they held the Soviets for months due to a simple front line and a slow moving Russian force, moving along Crap roads in freezing temperatures. In the Netherlands there was a modern road network and therefore an ability to supply troops and use tank divisions. I am however talking slightly out my arse here mind, I'm not too knowledgeable about the specifics of much of the war just a more general overview and I like to think myself a bit knowing on the concepts of the war.

@@hankthegreatone Modern for the time, Garands, bren guns or MG34s and a decent sub gun I suppose. They had fairly modern fighter planes but they could never really have had enough. From a tactical perspective more modern small arms can make a difference but as far as I understand, from a strategic perspective it matters a lot less.

One thing to keep in mind is that offensive orders are usually overly optimistic. The reason is that if things goes well, you want your troops to know where to go next, to keep the pressure up. If you provide only limited orders, then you may find your troops sitting around waiting for new orders, instead of moving to the next objective. If things go badly, it is usually in unforeseen ways, and local improvisation is needed. You don't want your front line officers burdened with overly complicated contingency plans. Order should be simple, easy to follow, easy to understand.

The Germans were very effective as my mother, her uncle and cousins awoke on the morning of the 10th to their army in the streets of their city of Roermond, Limburg, being only 2 miles West of the border. My mothers boyfriend was shot along with about 20 others as the Germans demanded obedience. Both my mother and her uncle were in the underground in Roermond, but my mother was removed for forced labor at various labor/concentration camps in Germany. She survived but many of the other Dutch, Polish, Belgians and eventually Russians in the camps did not. She was one of the lucky ones not to be shot during various escapes. My uncle was interrogated and tortured but never gave in and was repeatedly released after having his ribs kicked in. They were my heroes.

We prefer the Netherlands but realise that most people outside of the netherlands know the country as Holland. So a lot of people, including the site for tourism, simply use Holland because it is easier when communicating with foreigners.

That the Netherlands was captured in a few days wasn't the fault of the Armed Forces, it was the government in my opinion. The tension of a war with Germany grew already in the mid 1930s, nevertheless, there was almost nothing done to modernize our army. They used rifles and guns from World War I and even the Napoleon era. We had only 1 light tank, which wasn't even used during the German invasion. The budget of the army was cut several times in the 1920s and 1930s. The only real impressive modern weapon we had was the Fokker G.I fighter aircraft, but even those couldn't change anything in the skies. All I can say is massive respect for our boys that wanted to defend our borders. It was really farm boys against a new modern fighting force of Nazi Germany. We had no chance for victory, although, if they kept fighting after the bombing of Rotterdam I think they could delay them for a few days more. (which would not be worth it, thinking of the soldiers, civilians casualties and damage to our historical cities.)

I enjoy your videos. The common denominator here like in Poland and France and many other countries that were overrun by the Germans is that these nations did not have a formidable Air Force to challenge the air superiority of the Luftwaffe. The Germans, however, lacked the navy to take on Great Britain which played a major part in the ultimate defeat of the Third Reich.

@@HistoryHustle not entirely, but even Admiral Donitz told Hitler the navy needed more time and tried to persuade him to hold off on his attack on Poland. Donitz realized that a strong navy would hamper allied efforts to get much needed supplies to Western Europe and he was also hoping that by taking on the British he could cut off Britain’s supplies by controlling the North Atlantic much like the wolf packs did in WW1. I’m sure there are many reasons why Germany did not succeed, the crazy corporal not listening to his commanders, fighting a two front war, the eventual demise of his luftwaffe and air superiority which allowed the USAAF and RAF to carry out bombings over strategic targets almost unimpeded except the 8th aid forces did sustain large losses during those day time raids. Certainly the biggest headache for Hitler was losing the 6th Army at Stalingrad which kind of marked the beginning of the end for Hitler in the East. D-Day was his nightmare in the West. Always nice to hear from you and glad to have met you. In America it seems our youth have no interest in the past or learning of history. Our museums get defunded and attendance was down long before Covid-19. It’s really sad to say the least. I’m hoping one day to open a Education and Preservation Center a nice way of saying museum as I have a growing collection of historical artifacts from many periods. You should mention that indeed in fighter aircraft no significant dent was made, but an entire year of production of Transport planes was lost. According to German general .....(lost his name, too lazy to look up) they never were able to replace all of them through out the war and stopped them from planning an airborne assault on Britain. And please call it the Netherlands. Grebbeberg was not in Holland.

To be fair one would have to specify what year of production are we talking about, the production numbers differ significantly if we talk about production prior to the war or during the war... 1938 or 1939? Then yes the losses might have been the equivalent of the production of one year. But during the war Germany significantly increased the production of weapons including airplanes, in 1943 alone 887 Ju 52 transport airplanes were produced (compared to 145 in 1939). Thus in the years during the war 1940 to 1944 Germany produced more Ju 52s each year than it lost airplanes during the battle of the Netherlands.

Good contribution. But for me, even as dutch, the issue of the dutch participation in the war is a bit boring because of the limited scale and time. The bombing of Rotterdam was probably a mistake, Germans failed to communicate abortion with their pilots, resulting in a tragedy. In general, for both axis and allies, the bombing of civilians proved ineffective and even backfired during the war. Even the atomic bombs did not really made a difference - Japan was willing to absorb more nuclear attacks, but the Russian threath changed their minds. Interesting subject might be an exhausting coverage of the use and abilities of the G-1 air plane, the most modern cruise fighter during the German attack. Overrated potential?

This is what usually happens when a small country enters into the big politics of world players... The result could not be different. The Second World War was revenge for the unjust world peace after the First World War. This is what is happening now. The war in Ukraine is equivalent to the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962. At that time, the US felt threatened by the proximity of Soviet nuclear missiles placed in Cuba. Today, Russia fears Ukraine's joining NATO and the proximity of US missiles (Nato missiles, for the record, of course) from Moscow. What is the role of the Netherlands in this conflict that it actively supports Ukraine. Is Holland ready for war with Russia, or rather Holland expects to get colonies in fallen Russia? But this is a more dangerous game than with Germany in 1940. A few Russian nuclear torpedoes in the English Channel could turn the Netherlands into the Dutch Archipelago.

@@HistoryHustle A neutral country defined by words or deeds? Even Switzerland during the Second World War was not completely neutral, smuggling thousands of people with fake Swiss passports, fortunately without arming them. The status of a neutral country today is a smokescreen for the actions of special services. The only country that seems to be neutral in Europe today is Austria. But they have the experience of the last war, because instead of the Allies, they were liberated by the Red Army.

@@HistoryHustle You're absolutely right. Is Austria's sending of military socks and helmets to Ukraine military or humanitarian aid? What is the official position of the Netherlands today. Prime Minister Mark Rutte is sending another rockets and tanks to Ukraine and Mr. Andre Rieu is giving a great concert yesterday at the Formula 1 Dutch Grand Prix playing the Second Waltz ( of Russian composer Tchaikovsky) .

My girlfriend in the late eighties was from Rotterdam. During the occupation her father was sent to Sweden as a little boy but her mother had to endure it. She told me how Rotterdam was a relatively new city because of how it had been flattened. Clicking on the link below now thank you. r.i.p. Helen Van Dragger

@@HistoryHustle Your research is exact and very knowledgeable. As a German, I was very interested in your presentation of the final battle in the German Reich and can only compliment you on your excellent presentation. As a Dutchman, you naturally ask yourself the question of the course of the German war of aggression, which was a terrible crime. Warfare processes are extremely complex processes, involving many factors that also influence each other, making it difficult to isolate them. Much of this is a coincidence and unthinkable. Historians are still puzzling about many past battles and come to different conclusions. This is why such analyses are not logically imperative, and other explanations are also included in question. Your analyses is also not logically imperative and seems unlikely for me.

Piet Hein also they should have fought harder because they didn’t do anything else than stall the Germans for a few extra days. WOW! WE STALLED THEM FOR FIVE DAYS. Like that should be praised as an achievement. Even Finland held the Russians longer off than the Dutch against the Germans. 5 days is nothing and doesn’t really affect the outcome.
