How Edward Hopper Used Light: Gas, Nighthawks and Hodgkin's House

Edward Hopper's paintings are known and loved for the eerie narratives that they create. In this video we look at how his painting of light contributes to this.
We will see - perhaps unexpectedly - how he uses the same principles and theories as the Impressionists, but to a very different effect. I show you the fundamentals of this method including the ideas of local or object colour, primary and secondary light sources, and how complementary colours play a key role.
As always we look at some of the artist's great paintings to see what we can steal from them, in this case Hopper's 'Gas' (1940; www.moma.org/c...) , 'Nighthawks' (1942; www.artic.edu/...) and 'Hodgkin's House' (1928; private collection). Our old friend Vincent van Gogh's chair also makes an appearance as I look at how different artists have different objectives.
If you have any questions or observations, please drop them into the Comments below and I'll make a point of responding. And please don't forget to subscribe - we'll be delving deeper into Hopper in the next few videos, and plan to steal from lots more Great Artists in the future!

Hello Ian. A lovely way to end 2019 watching an inspiring video by you! Possibly the most interesting point I picked up from this video is that white is warm. The other points helped me memorise all the excellent information you give us in your classes. As always thank you!

Hi Ross, Forgive me for misleading you but I think pure white is a neutral colour but can appear warm when surrounded by cold colours. There are coloured whites which vary in warmth and coldness depending on which colours are added. happy new year Ian

Hello Ian I attended your art course many years ago. You helped me improve my art work in life classess Now I have a daughter with autism who has the gift of art but more intensive than me.. It would be nice to hear apart from the artists colours what the artists were interpreting as we know the emotional drive and what the eye and mind sees is far more interesting than a practical combination of colour. very nice to see your videos I wish I could paint what I see and feel. It would be great to see your painting actually. I have not checked your channel out as yet but I'm sure it would be interesting to hear about artists and why they painted that way and how many years later their ideas and minds were modern etc etc very nice to see you on KZread xx

Thanks for your comment Sam. I am pleased to know I helped you in the past. I agree with you when you imply that technique is just a small part of painting, but I also think that without technque it is diffcult to express feelings and thoughts with paint. This is why I am focusing on technique at the moment. I want to focus on ideas and interpretation later. best wishes Ian x

@@ianellis9115 I guess the first interpretation is what the artist is feeling what they are communicating the expressive feeling in themselves to speak without words to I don't know like someone who can't speak words open their mouths w

@@ianellis9115 sorry for comment I mean the it's like the mouth cannot speak but the paint and hand can if you know what I mean the hand can put in words what the mouth can't if that makes sense XX

Hi Sam, yes I agree that words are inadequate for visual art, especially quality painting due to the mystery of hand and mind coordination. Though a good painter may use knowledge it will be used creatively to help the intuitive side of the mind. This is so complex most painters are not sure what they have created. Because of this some think a painter is not the best person to interpret their own work. Thanks for your comments. I hope you will find my interterpretations interesting when I get round to passing them on. best Ian

And you are right Ian I guess my enthusiasm makes me want to jump straight in but yes actually when I did classes that were technical I found frustrating as I wanted to produce something straight away but actually the work I did when taught from technical was more realistic. Yet I feel that urge to be passionate I'd be making a big mess I expect lol but there is something about colour and expressing a feeling a passion from inside maybe tutors like you keep that under control not that I am extrovert but that's what I found frustrating anyway I'm gonna make a big colourful painting in rebellious style xx
