How Eating Sushi Killed 2 People, And It Wasn't The Fish

Ойын-сауық

You decide to take your wife out on an impromptu lunch date. The two of you settle on sushi and head over to the restaurant that’s been the local go-to for over 20 years.
Dave’s Sushi.
Little did you know that today was the one day you should have gone literally anywhere else.
Once you’ve left Dave’s after having a lovely meal, your wife says she’s feeling unwell.
Must have just been something she ate that’s not agreeing with her.
But as time ticks on, she doesn’t show any signs of feeling better.
In fact, she’s only getting worse.
And it’s to the point now where it’d probably be a good idea to go to the ER to be safe.

Magical thinking of "cook long enough so the badness goes away" helps nobody, not even with eating meat. Extracting the poisonous chemicals same as neutralizing any parasites just has to be done purposefully. Or even synthesising compounds in a lab.

They aren't. I'm unsure where Brew got this story from and I'm not saying it didn't happen, but I am a veteran mushroom hunter and can tell you that you are absolutely able to eat raw morels without issue. For them to poison you, there would have to be some form of malicious bacteria or the soil would have to have been poison. Frankly I'm very confused by this entire situation.

Well technically Sushi can be anything that's served with vinegar rice, which is where the term Sushi comes from. It's the term Sashimi that refers to raw fish if that's by chance what you're thinking. Sushi can be made with fish, eggs, mushrooms, vegetables, etc. A lot of restaurants like to experiment with this.

This is crazy because here in Oregon it's very popular for people to forage for and consume Morel mushrooms and yet I've never heard about them being potentially risky mushrooms. Everyone considers them a delicious edible mushroom. Idk why someone would want to eat morels raw? I eat button mushrooms raw dipped in ranch and they are delicious but most mushrooms need to be cooked in order to be enjoyable to eat. I love oyster & lobster mushrooms if they are sautéed in butter, salt, a bit of garlic.

I always thought that the problem lied with false morels like the Gyromitra family. Gyromitra tend to be in season in the early summer (and get scarcer towards the south, although they do pop up down south in Mexico at least), while most wild mushrooms tend to come towards the autumn. In Finland for example, true morels aren't very common but Gyromitra are eaten... only after boiling at least twice in abundant water, discarding the water in between, and flushing after each boiling. Also the preparation room must be well ventilated.

All mushrooms can possibly lead to intoxication and death. Even bolete. Insufficient cooking and poor conservation can even turn the most edible mushroom into a deadly poison. And heck do wild mushrooms rot fast. Take the shaggy mane, for instance. A kind of mushroom who turns into ink when it rots. You need to cook it within the same day, or even half day, of picking it if you want to eat it safely. Anyway, morels are considered as very edible mushrooms, and they're in high demand and expensive. By no means are they considered as deadly.

I’ve been hunting/eating morels since I could walk thru the woods and I can attest to their delight. As a matter of fact, they should start making their appearance within the next 2-3 weeks in the Eastern U.S., weather permitting. Happy hunting to any fellow “Morellers” 👊🏼

Had a really bad stomachache after eating medium rare morels about 7 years ago when we were up in the mountains foraging them. I knew this was a possibility if they were undercooked, but they tasted so good I took the risk and paid for it afterwards.
