How DUNE (2021) Did the Impossible

Фильм және анимация

The newest adaptation of Dune, directed by Denis Villeneuve has finally hit cinemas - and HBO Max, but you should probably see it on the big screen - and against all the odds it has been a huge success, with Dune Part Two recently being green lit. While I will be releasing my thoughts on the movie - basically my review - later on, for this video I wanted to examine the marketing, box office trends and other factors which contributed to Dune becoming a hit when it seemed like such a difficult thing to pull off. After all if Dune can do it, maybe some other supposedly "unfilmable" projects can do it too.

Worse - it feels like the 2000 mini series pilot with good effects, taking at least 50% longer to tell less story. Given the budget difference of the mini series to this one film, to say I'm not impressed is a sizable understatement to my disappointment in the wasted potential here. The visual look and sound is so very right - but so much time is wasted on repeatedly boasting of it in every shot that they neglect to give most of the film any story to work with. Consequently it's about 66% longer than the mini series pilot with less story/plot/character development addressed. I actually wish that they had split this into a mini series format. To think what the makers of the 2000 Dune and 2002 Children of Dune makers could have done with modern VFX capabilities and the current willingness of AAA film actors to work on Netflix, Amazon and Apple 'TV' projects.....

@@mnomadvfx I have a thousand small problems with the movie. That being said this is about the best movie we could have got. As someone that read the books, before going into the movie Sci Fi's film was my favorite. It has all the story intrigue. It was pretty much a faithful to the book as you could be with the medium of film. Dune 2021 did something that has completely changed what a movie could be for me. I if this style of movie takes off... I will be incredibly interested to see where films can go. All the books are about the possible paths humanity can take. Seleuca Secundus is a penal planet that is an irradiated hellscape after a nuclear war. As a planet it is barely survivable. The Emperor's Sardaukar only take the best of the survivors of this planet. This movie, you get to see the culture in which they were raised. Doing battle rights as they were gearing up for the trip... I felt I was experiencing their thousand of years of history in one little snippet time. House Atreides, it's bullfighting, the culture in which Paul was raised... Every culture, language, and people were distinct. Their culture was giving time to breathe. That is what we are getting with all of the strip downess. Something I didn't know something a non art house movie could do. Only the the basic story elements were shown. Which... If you are only going into this without reading the book, you would be constantly being shelled with plot points. I watched the movie with a 15 year old kid. That hadn't read the book. He loved it. It wasn't hard for him to follow. Awesome This first movie is almost a primer for the book.

The impact on the ultimate outcome is minimal for where this film ended, and the story could easily be reworked to the story as told in the film. The dinner scene also revolves around this subplot, but mainly performs another layer of worldbuilding, sets up Arrakis politics, and introduces extremely minor characters even within the book: another obvious cut. My favorite thing about Dune(2021) is it doesn't talk down to the audience. by that, I mean over explain things. The hunter-seeker. In most movies there would be a whole scene where they explain what they are and how dangerous they are so stupidly a 3 year old could understand it the second it comes on screen. Dune. Nope. Thing - Danger - Oh Crap - Plan to Solve the Problem and Solve the Problem without a word. Just Direction, Editing, and Acting.

  • @mnomadvfx

    @mnomadvfx

    2 жыл бұрын

The point of the hunter killer has less to do with how dangerous it is than the events around and following it. ie How skilled Paul had to be in order to save both himself and Shadout Mapes. The near apopleptic rage of Duke Leto at how close his son came to death (when losing a near full load of spice and a harvester did not make him feel this). The resultant tightening of security in Arrakeen. How much this compromises the Baron Harkonnen's timetable for dealing with the Atreides. To the point that he has to considerably accelerate it, all because Rabban acted without consulting the Baron first. In short you concentrated so hard on the the explanation of the HK that you missed absolutely everything that justifies that it 😂😂😂. Missing the forest for the trees..... it's not just a saying you know. As for acting, I'm less than impressed with Chalamet - he looks the part and he obviously prepared well for the fight scenes but nothing else about his portrayal of Paul impressed me. He seemed childish, easily distracted and all round not Paul Atreides. Even before the Water of Life unlocks his ancestors genetic memories he is basically described as a calm, middle aged (or older) man by temperament, in a childs body. In short Chalamet is basically playing the Young Adult version of Paul Atreides. As a YT critic once famously said - THANKS I HATE IT! I waited 20 years for another adaptation after seeing Lynch's Dune - only the visuals, sound design (not the score), Jessica, Leto and the Baron's acting/portrayals impressed me. All else was little more than thin sketches of character and plot propped up by endless CG, navel gazing or scenery shots.

What makes a movie great is when you can feel the love in every little detail. You can tell when a director understands and deeply loves his creation, especially for franchises with a fanbase. It is the same love the fans have and also gives newcomers lots to explore and a feeling of connectedness. It's like the space between spaces, it can be felt and is immensely joyful, but not overexplained. It makes the world feel full and exciting. I find a lot of movies reveal everything, lay out the cards and there is nothing lingering behind the curtain to peak at. Everything is handed to you, already pointed out. there is little beyond the surface to find and marvel at. Dune succeeds in creating this sense of wonder like nothing i have seen in years, you want to just dive in until you have to come up for air

I beg to differ on the "visuals in the trailer" point. Yes, other movies have their most spectacular shots in their trailers, but the big franchises, like SW, ST or DCU, are known quantities, while Dune is new to most people, like you said yourself. Besides looking absolutely stunning, the visuals for Dune have something very new and alien to them and I believe that caught a lot of people's attention. Focus on visuals and personal stories go hand in hand for Dune and that is very well reflected in the trailer.

I’m coming at this as a fan of the book, so I can’t speak to what worked about the marketing from the perspective of those not familiar with Dune. I think a key aspect, similar to the casting, is that a lot of the fans really had faith Villeneuve was a perfect fit to direct and just haven’t been able to shut up about this movie for the past year or two. I haven’t, at least. It was a feeling of excitement rather than dread that they’ll screw it up you see with a lot of other adaptations. The pandemic causing delays into the next year meant that excitement carried on for even longer. I know several people who became interested just because I was so confident the movie would be great. The fanbase isn’t as massive as something like LOTR or Harry Potter, sure, but a large group of people genuinely enthusiastic about a thing can be infectious.

How about we just enjoy art without having to believe we made the "right" choice in seeing the "better" film? Without having to pit art against art in competition? What's wrong with just liking things? Why do you have to be A DUNE FAN instead of someine who likes Dune? And why should DUNE FANS be in competition with MARVEL FANS? Why can't people just like what they like, and not have to feel smug about their liked property doing better than what they don't like? Also, crazy idea - what's stopping you being a Dune fan AND a Marvel fan? Nothing! It's not a lifelong commitment, you're not "a Dune guy", now! All you do by engaging in this farcical competition is polarise audiences, earning more money for the faceless corporations who make the films. Again, why should you care if Dune does better than Eternals? Did Eternals kill your family? Did Dune save your dig from death? Brands are just brands. They don't deserve such loyalty. Dune is a story. One of my favourites, but just a story. And I gain NOTHING by treating it like a sports team. Also, considering the very purpose of Dune is to warn against blind fanaticism, it kinda seems like you missed the point of the story, because you're engaging in exactly the same behaviour that Herbert warned against. Such devotion is not healthy. Be your own person.

I would say the Sci-fi Miniserieses were both very good for what they had. They also both were big hits in terms of their ratings at the time. And it wasn't lack of interest or profit that stopped Sci-Fi from making the rest of the series...as such. Rather, it was Sci-Fi being bought out and turned into a reality show network. That said, as a movie, this succeeded beyond my expectations. And like Quinn, I'm glad Joborowski's Dune was never made. Though it's influence on sci-fi movies was huge.

And his crew was incredible, from the editors, sound designers and everyone really, every single one of them did their job with passion and incredible skill. Hhhahahahha - gee mate, you are really funny. The MCU is still making money - more than enough to make Kennedy shit so hard it fills the Lucasfilm offices. COVID and over confidence in wokeness as a money making crutch for lazy screenwriting has indeed caused Disney/Marvel to stumble. But the market for such films is still there, it didn't wane over the time from Iron Man to Avengers Endgame, it got CONSIDERABLY stronger (nearly $3 billion box office for Endgame alone, case in point). The market for Star Wars is there too if they can get their thumbs out of their wokeness machines and write some compelling stories instead of relying on tweaking the nipples of the woke brigade to bring people to the box office - the increasingly diminishing BO profits from each successive sequel trilogy film demonstrated this far better than any anti woke argument a fan could make to them. They understand that they fucked up - Mandalorian is sort of the beginning of a course correction, KOTOR remake is another. The only real benefit of smaller projects is shorter filming schedules - ergo lower possibility of having to stop for COVID isolations if they are filming in countries that still do this.

Read somewhere that Lynch had never read the book before he made the movie and even without the evidence of studio meadling you can clearly tell. Equally so Villeneuve loved the book when he read it as a teenager (watched an interview) and that love comes through in every scene. Lynch's version comes across as not taking itself seriously, while Villeneuve's has an air of awe and reverence that resonates with the tone of the novel very well.

They beat famous beats first. Dune inspired a lot of imitators. However, Dune relied on emphasizing what remained that makes it unique. If Luke Skywalker wants off a desert world, then people go, "Duh, who wouldn't?" But when Paul wants to go into a desert, that is intriguing. Also, modern audiences are unfamiliar with the siren's/goddess's/sorceress's call trope, which Chani, who is not a magical character, functions. And while knockoffs, such as Game of Thrones, Star Wars, and Riddick emphasize heroic journeys, Paul is consistently indicated as going on a villain's journey. The visions, the wardrobe, and the fact he is a physical wimp with a keen mind (similar to his forerunner Lex Luthor) all depict him with dread.

I went to the theater to watch it after strong recommendation from a few friends and I was very glad I did. The movie is fantastic, with almost everyone in the cast winning me over in their roles by the end of the film, even Jason Mamoa, who I feel wasn't particularly strong in this movie, did manage to charm me into liking the relationship he had with Paul Atredis. My largest 'complaint' is how boring they made House Harkonnen. Skarsgard is an amazing actor, but they didn't let him do very much, which I feel was to the detriment to the film. Ian McNeice, who played Baron Harkonnen in the Sci Fi miniseries, did a much better job in his portrayal of the Baron, primarily because they gave him ample opportunity to emote on the feud between Harkonnen and Atredis, but a also multiple times explaining the plan and how it was brought to fruition. House Harkonnen as a whole was much better served in the miniseries and if I could beg for some extended scenes it would be for filling in Skarsgard's Harkonnen. Even with that criticism, they certainly did a wonderful job with the looks and I very much enjoyed the creepiness of the grav belt as opposed to how it was portrayed in previous renditions. If there is one perfect casting choice though, it has to be Brolin. I haven't been following any of the hype or trailers or casting choices for dune, so my first impression of Gurney is as seen in the movie, and the moment I saw Brolin it clicked just how perfect he was for the role. Yes it's true he's not book accurate as he's not an ugly lump of a man, but his demeanor and voice just matched the Warmaster perfectly, truly perfection in casting.

The lotr of sifi Starwars and startrek can rest easy in there graves I love how they stuck to the main arc of the story and just spared the normal audience the exposition nightmare... New comers to the dune universe will understand the basic human story.. Greed fear treachery love ambition lust for power... Etc you know basic human emotions and motivations. Its always better to let the characters drive the plot While die hard fans will understand the little things Brilliant way to adapt such a lore heavy series

I've been trying to figure out who you sound like, and I finally got it at the end of the video. You sound like Big Clive. Not just the accent, which is close to his, but the timbre and cadence of your speech is very Big Clive. Also, cool video. I don't really care about this stuff, but I do like listening to people talk at length about Dune (2021).

Good point about not anchoring the ad campaign around the book. It is based on the book and sticks to it very well, but the book had a surprisingly limited cultural impact worldwide (sci fi just wasn't as widespread back in the mid-60's). So by appealing to how beautiful it would be and how awesome the story was going to be and how amazing the cast looked, they made it more appealing to people who hadn't read the book (which is the majority).

I love the 2021 version but have a soft spot for the 1984 Lynch movie It captured some of the strangeness of the book, and the Toto soundtrack is in mine opinion one of the best movie soundtracks out there

I read Dune around freshman year at university, about 1965 or 66. I was fascinated by it and read it many times and it is my second favorite book, the first is The Source by Mitchner.

Dune did, for me, what I believe any great book adaptation should do: hook the viewer so much that they go and read the books as well as watching the movie(s).

Never heard of dune before the I saw the trailer a few years ago. But that trailer had me Interested. Did my research and found out it was based on a book. So I read the book and this is the most excited I’ve ever gotten for a movie. I counted down the days till release

On the opposite end of "Based on a best selling novel" the printing of the book I first read in the early 1970s (196? printing) had on its cover, "Soon to be a major motion picture".

You need to divide the total sales by the number of books in each series.

I would like to add something you did not mention, and I believe it skewed some of your numbers, at least state side. Dune, the book came out at the "HEIGHT" of the American Library. You didn't buy a book, you checked it out, read it, and returned it. So effectively 400 people could have read it for every single book sold, and that's just what happened and how I read them plural. That being said I do not know of any polling system that rates the popularity of library books, as almost no one even knows what one is anymore. Where you are correct, is this particular fan-base is 40-90 in age, thus "not" the target demographic for most blockbuster movies Marvel being a notable exception, as most of the material came from the 70's to 90's as well. Everything you said about the world building for people who had zero clue what Dune was, is completely spot on.

I think that "Blade Runner 2049" also played some part in it. It was a Box Office flop but it brought a lot of recognition and good reputation to Villenueve. If "Dune" came out of nowhere it wouldn't bring as many people as it did when people knew who stands behind it.

I was quite nervous about Dune 2021, and when i saw the trailer as awesome as it looked i told myself, this will fly over the mainstream audience heads. Then i remembered how much i loved Denis' Blade Runner 2049 but critics and general audience said it was too slow; so i thought will Villenuve's Dune suffer the same problem? Thankfully it doesn't and has a solid pace. The set design, visuals and action are outstanding. It's a faithful adaptation of Herbert's first novel, first half of it. And yes the casting for this film really helped the film immensely.

I have all the Dune books, what I like about this version, yes it is cut down vs the book, but its pared down to its core story with out any artistic licence BS or losing its soul.
