    Another goldmine of information! Especially loved learning about the 3 different types of dryer technology, the comparison table btw gaz and evaporation and the history. I think what makes this series compelling is that it makes sense of fundamental science, our everyday household technology and history. With this video being rich in content, it will appeal to adult learners to people in the market for a dryer to history buffs. It's also nice to learn about dryer tech without having to read marketing material from each brand or go through tedious technical videos. PS: Would consider covering air conditioning units? With scorchingly hot summers in many parts of the world, global warming, the cost of A/C and maintenance, the concern for energy consumption, it could be interesting. Just an idea! I subscribe and learn regardless. Thank you for what you do.

    Hamilton was the company to offer dryers and companies such as GM Frigidaire bought dryers from Hamilton to pair up with their washers. There was a Hamilton washer built in the mid 50’s to about late 60’s but were rebadged Norge washer which were a division of Borg Warner who built car parts for Ford. Westinghouse was the first to design and build their own dryers but had to stop production during WWII but resumed production shortly after WWII ended. Whirlpool started building their own dryers in 1948, GE started building their own dryers around 1950, GM Frigidaire sometime in 1953 along with Maytag. GM Frigidaire made condenser dryers from the beginning since they marked them for people who didn’t want to put a vent through the wall or simply didn’t have access to a vent. Maytag had a water condenser dryer which worked well but had to offer vented models a few years later since some water condenser dryers of that time used about 1/3 to 1/2 gallon of water a minute. Most companies just went to vented models after 1955 since they were less expensive to build and offered fast drying times, Whirlpool/Kenmore offered gas dryers with a 37,000 btu heat output and 9000 watt 50 amp electric models that could literally get a 9 pound load of laundry dried in about 30 minutes time and sometimes even less than that since they were that powerful. GE and Whirlpool/Kenmore came up with a automatic dry in 1958 which used a double throw switch cycling thermostat which advanced the timer when the heat cycled off and stopped the timer as soon as the heat came back on which surprisingly worked well and that’s what most mid range dryers used and some here in the US still use the simple auto dry timer. As far as moisture sensors go, Maytag came up with that in 1960 (Maytag kept that design until 1975) which had the moisture sensors in the baffles which provided very accurate moisture sensing and no other dryer has been made in North America with moisture sensors in baffles.

    @@thinguide3687 oh yeah, there definitely will be videos for sure sometime next year. I may even explain on how Maytag’s Halo Of Heat design works since it’s a interesting design and that’s the dryer Maytag had in 1960 which used moisture sensors in the baffles to sense and feel the moisture in the laundry that was being dried.

    In the months since this video came out, General Electric actually put out a washer-dryer that fixes most of the downsides of washer-dryers in general. From what I understand, they did this by putting the components that make up the dryer on top of the machine behind the control panel rather than shove them into the main body like is usually done.

    @@thinguide3687 I would say historic content has quite a large audience. If you want to keep your current brand of "how x works" you could go with something political like "how multi party elections work" or if you wanted to go after tech and or gamers you could go with something like "how multiplayer works". Both are technically on brand but quite different from your typically engineering focus content. Focusing on objects sets quite a hard limit on audience size as each individual item will have a different audience as well as people who just enjoy the engineering such as myself (which there arent as many of), which is why if you went with a broader topic range while still maintaining a engineering focus you would satisfy both your core (engineers) as well as possibly gain other demographics, it really depends on what demographics you want to shoot for. (given that im quite drunk i may have typed sth completely stupid and worth ignoring)

    Wonderful Video :), loved the diagrams explaining the circuits of the different types of dryer. I had a question - I understand from your video that running cost in terms of electricity etc of heat pump dryer is cheapest in long run. However, I would like to know which dryer is costliest, and which is the cheapest in terms of maintenance, servicing repairs etc ?

  • @thinguide3687

    @thinguide3687

    Glad it was helpful! I can only give you an educated guess as to which would be the most costly over it's lifecycle as it depends on soo many variables. Such as cost of potential maintenance, the build quality etc. Having said that in my opinion the most costly would be the washer dryer, they are more likely to have issues due to the increased complexity and they aren't as optimised for drying compared to the others. This is just an opinion though. I am glad you enjoyed the video and I would really appreciate it if you could share it with anybody who you think might enjoy it.

    The most cost effective dryer I can think of is a gas dryer since they aren’t as expensive to run compared to electric and in general can be more reliable under heavy usage since there isn’t a heating element to burn out or the jumper wire from the heating element to high limit safety thermostat. The only thing you need to do in terms of maintenance on a gas dryer (this also applies to vented electric models as well) is vacuum any lint behind the dryer, clean the vent duct, and the inside of the machine itself, that’s all there is to maintaining a vented dryer. As for a condenser dryer, the heat exchanger has to be cleaned at least once a week since lint can build up reducing drying speed and efficiency. Heat pump dryers need to have the evaporator cleaned off once a week and sometimes every couple of days, if a leak develops in the refrigerant system, you’ll need a professional who deals with refrigeration and air conditioning equipment to diagnose and fix the leak which can be expensive which might not be feasible if the repairs exceed the cost of a new one. Vented dryers will always have higher longevity since there’s a lot less complexity inside them, most can last up to at least 20 to 30 years if not more when taken care of and maintained on a yearly basis.

  • @thinguide3687

    @thinguide3687

    Both condenser dryers and heat pump dryers can be used in cold garages, however it is more efficient to use any type of dryer in warmer conditions as the air needs to be heated up prior to use. Heat pump dryers are usually the worst at dealing with cold conditions because of there lack of a traditional heating element.
