It never ceases to amaze me that we get to watch such high quality content worldwide FOR FREE!
Unbelievable! I thought it is a CONTEMPORARY painting/max.late 19th century,IMITATING old paintings in a funny way! But NO! Renaissance! REALLY HIT ME! WONDERFUL ! THANK YOU SO MUCH! 👏👏🤗
The dutchess is one of the creepiest illustrations in any literature I’ve ever seen and has haunted me ever since I first read Alice in Wonderland when I was 7 years old. Matsys’ grotesque Dutchess is even more disturbing.
This is one of my favourite paintings. I have her postcard, bought from the gallery, as she assists me in pondering upon life... Such an emotive painting. Thank you for sharing her as many just walk past with a giggle or uncomfortable glance.
Wow! That is amazing work. I can't imagine the pressure I would feel after being given the task of "fixing" a centuries old painting. She is a pro and an artist.
I have a postcard of this painting from one of my visits to the Gallery. Even printed in that form the details are amazing. I love it. Thank you for giving her the care she deserves.
This painting always gives me the idea that the duchess is a composition of different persons.
I got a detention because I had this picture on a Google slide in 5th grade. Fun times.
I love this rendition of the grotesque, the Duchess is in so many ways perfect.
I bet Leonardo da Vinci just did it for giggles, but now people look at it critically like it's a masterpiece, though I do admit it's very good.

Imagine spending months with so much dedication and hardwork just for something not serious.
i agree it is a transfixing, gorgeous and respectable painting full of mastery. if the duchess were transformed into a beautiful, young form of herself she'd have qualities like the lovely restorer, which makes watching & listening to her appreciate the piece the way it deserves all the more enchanting
Thank you so much for sharing your talents with us ❤
Thanks Britta for explaining the restoration process!
Amazing. Thank you. Another gem to add to my secondary school portrait project. Thank you.

You are very welcome!
Thank you Britta excellently described and those hands are truly wonderful
I am wondering why modern pigments (e.g. Cadmiums) are used to restore the background? Wouldn’t you want to keep with the pigments available at the time? Thank you for bringing this knowledge to the public. It increases appreciation for the arts.
Very impressive, the whole restoration process, and all the knowledge and skill that goes into it, I really admire that! Please do more of these videos, I love to watch them. ❤

it must be a tiring and scary job, every stroke so crucial. though satisfying
Exquisite painting. Excellent talk. 👍🏻
Fascinating video. So much work!
Massys definitely appreciated needlecraft and weaving as the arts that they were.
Very interesting history, and despite the title the artist's skill is amazing. Thank you. 👍😊
Absolutely fascinating. What an amazing piece of art its breathtaking. The skills & enthusiasm of the people who look after it & the collection should be celebrated. Than you .
Fascinating, marvelous experience ✨️
I'd like to have all three stages side by side because the differences are too subtle to an inexperienced eye.
There must be a connection between the paintings; the left hands of the duchess and the old man are identical in pose.
Ms New, thank you so much. You are clearly very knowledgeable and it was a pleasure to view this.
One of my favourite paintings, would love to get a print of this.
Wonderfully informative video. Thank you very much.
Amazing work!
Awesome work!
I'd be nice to see the raking light of the final painting and the back of it. Did you choose a 3d-movement backing support like the Durero's "Addam" in the Prado Museum (Spain) or did you leave it with nothing?
Hi. Is there a large digitalization available for further studies?
Nice work! Interesting subject and good presenter.
beautiful work
Thanks or sharing, pretty interesting about the background. You could drive yourself crazy trying to sort out what has happened without any real documentation from the past.
Humans have a fascination with the extremes. In this case the other side of the beauty spectrum. Amazing work.
` 🕊️ Thak you for the educational and sophisticated explanation.
fascinating work
i know this sound crazy but look at the film the green man i think it's called, they show something of some kind of alchemical technology they had in the past for take some kind of photos,i really believed that there rally was something similar in some very restricted special "groups" .
Non vedo attinenza con le pitture di Leonardo. Comunque è una bella scoperta, soprattutto perché ha a che fare con la favola di Alice nel Paese delle Meraviglie. Grazie
Hands are indeed one of the more intimidating subjects to paint. One has to wonder about the choices that went into the creation of headgear in ages past.
The first copy of Alice in Wonderland I had as a child I got in a 2nd hand shop had that style duchess in the illustrations. Gutted I lost it.
Great job, she looks amazing :)
Very interesting. Thanks
Very interesting.
amazing
Reminds me of the character off of alice madness returns
Art is beautiful even when it's ugly
There is a roof boss of the same shape and sex as this Duchess in Wantage parish church. This would have been known to Lewis Caroll under his Oxford personality.
La mano appoggiata oltre ad essere simile a quella del dipinto del 1513, si nota un richiamo alla mano di un dipinto di Antonello da Messina.
LOVE❤
Surprise to see the duchess here. I saw the original in the Prado in Madrid in 2018. The story is that she lived in the same neighbourhood as Leonardo and he disliked her very much because she was a gossip and a disruptive influence in the community. He made this caricature of her and Massys made an oil painting many years later.
Unique,
Add any number of years and she is us,hence the original title. The squeezed bosom a vestige of her youthful beauty and she herself a budding rose.
She might have had a lighter background because she is lit with direct light which casts strong shadows. The man as far as I can see doesn't share her shadows.

Though he might be heavily retouched to make him look more like how people in the past wanted to imagine paintings were done by the "true serious" masters
Who put Jerry Stiller in a painting?
She looks so much like my Mother In-law...
“Clearly one of the most beautiful paintings in the gallery”😂
Are you going to put another cradle on the back to preserve the square shape or put on a wood frame? How will painting stand on its own?🇺🇲

Hi @Candy Newton, thank you for your question! Although the panel has been thinned, it is painted on very high quality Baltic oak and unlikely to take up more than a very slight curvature. It is now stable and self-supporting so does not require a new fixed auxiliary support, it is however housed within a frame and this does give additional support for handling and during display. If you're interested in art restoration and conservation videos you can find more on our channel.

This woman’s job is akin to cutting priceless diamonds.
Wonders never case! The 'restorer' explains everything very well, but her 'palette' appears a very 'limited' and somewhat 'simple' formula for an Old Master painting---one would have assumed that there were several 'glazes' to build up to the final finish. Otherwise a 'treat' to all art lovers fascinated (as were the Italian Renaissance artists) by the portrayal of character in old people's faces!
Antwerp painters where the best!
i don't understand how removing parts of the picture, to suit modern taste, can be conserving ? That's editing ? Is it not possible that picture was part of a larger scene, and now it has been successively pruned to lose all the original meaning and balance ? We don't rebuild battle ruined castles or add parts to archaeological fragments....
Culture is quite an interesting thing, to me she’s gorgeous, to others she’s totally unnerving or disgusting .. there’s a lot we could look into on what causes that difference, but i think it’s quite an noteworthy one
Striking, yes. "Beautiful...", perhaps not so much imho.
I can't believe that you removed the side strip of the painting "because it didn't serve any purpose, really"..
Light Shad\g1,
Id be upset if i knew ppl were altering/restoring my painting while i was gone. They didn't paint them to last forever. i only think age and decay add to the beauty of it. Like thats not your painting lol why are you touching it
Let me guess Leo was transitioning to Leah?
Too much pepper
Is that Lavrov? In Ukraine he is called 'The Sad Horse' 🤭😁
Nou KZread heeft weer niks over wat vertaling betreft maar als je ook nog naar een ratelfabriek moet luisteren is de lol er snel vanaf ,slechte vertoning als geheel
Great skill,......but that is a scary looking women and would never hang that on my wall. It makes me uncomfortable to look at.
he did not paint fictional characters.... those were real ppl.... real ppl with alot of money..... he worked for nobility
It's a beautifully painted image of a not beautiful woman.
This looks like some people's momma.
this is just an epic troll of reichwingers by the artist by painting a man in drag.
His paintings are for the fire. The LAST SUPPER, HAD no woman. What mocking he did with that.
the painting is making fun of older women that dress "too young for their age". the painter had a sense of humor
