How does this bizarre Citroen with a Maserati engine look, sound and feel like today
This the bizarre Citroen SM, a car with a Maserati engine under the bonnet, made in the times when French engineers and designers were crazy and admirable at the same time. It has a mind-blowing engineering even by today’s standards!
Today we are going to discover the intriguing story and engineering of Citroen SM and explore this car, which I found in Switzerland, at Oldtimer Gallerie Toffen.
Special thanks to Oldtimer Galerie Toffen for providing us the car! ► / oldtimergalerietoffen

ABOUT Timeless Driving
Timeless Driving is dedicated to timeless passion for driving and timeless cars. And it’s not only about the age of a car, but rather about the passion put in it. We love cars that have a timeless ingredient in them. It can be a proper historic model, manufactured 40 or 90 years ago, but it can also be a recent, 15-year old model that is already treated with admiration. Or it can even be a present-day car that breaths passion and timeless potential in every bit. As we say it - Timeless. Not necessarily old. Aware of great care classic cars deserve and aware of collecting value, but not necessarily elitist. Cars, motorcycle, trucks, motorsport, engineering, unknown stories from past that are admirable today - all of them can be subjects here!

I had the rare honour for my 21st birthday present in 1974 here to drive the new fuel injected Right Hand Drive SM owned by a neighbour who lived up the street, here in Sydney, I had a GS... as did my dad. It was a mind-blowing experience... The closest I came to ownership was a new 1978 CX Prestige EFI 5 speed with leather. It's self centring steering had 2.5 turns lock to lock v the SM - 2 turns. The CX missed out on the brake button - the brake valve was disguised as a pedal.

I used to drive a silver SM (ODP 591M) in the West End of London back in the late 70s. A wonderful car to drive and a real head turner.

Yes, very few mechanics nowadays can deal with it, especially with the hydro pneumatic suspension and all the additional systems, with the same circuit. Usually there are 1-2 service shops in a whole country that can still repair something like this. But it is a part of the magic!

I learnt to drive in my father’s Citroen GS 45 years ago here in England and fell in love with the whole range at the time. I also drove a 2CV, Ami 8, Dyane and CX. My first new car was a Visa Club. The XM is one of my dream cars to own and I think it is simply stunning. Citroen were such an innovative car company with models such as the Traction Avant all the way through to the XM. It is such a shame that the company seems to have lost its innovative spirit these last 25 years but with the current Ami perhaps that spirit is stirring again.

@@timelessdriving I have very happy memories of Citroens. Over the years I have had Fords, many BMWs, a Jaguar XJ8, a Mercedes S320Cdi and now a fantastic Audi A8. Yet I still miss driving the old Citroens as they had so much character. The air-cooled engines of the 2CV etc. were fantastic but it’s just a shame that Citroen never really developed a high end performance engine in-house. I look forward to your next video.

I own a 40 year old CX with this absolutely wonderful hydropneumatic system... no leaks. All it takes is regular maintenance. Just like any other machine then. Flush out the green blood every 2 years. Don't let the car sit for too long. Drive it regularly. My car is fine and goes brilliantly at 40...

So well thought out that they were without an engine after their plan to develop their own six cylinder engine was not happening, so well thought out that they had to buy another company and then gave that company a deadline of six months to supply the engine, so well thought out that that company, Maserati, took one of their V8 engines and simply cut off two cylinders to be able to produce the V6 in time...all very well thought out...build a car and then run around to find something to propel the car...indeed very well thought out...
