How does this 3D scanner change the movie world? - Creality CR-Scan Ferret Pro

Фильм және анимация

In this review, JP reviews the CR-Scan Ferret Pro 3D Scanner from Creality and explains the benefits of 3D scan technology for capturing life casts for makeup effects as well as for model miniatures.
We take a sneak peek at the use of the scanner being used for a current project, and contemplate the impact of the technology being used for makeup effects work on movies.

    How does the scanner cope with black hair, and hair in general?

  • @InCameraTV

    @InCameraTV

    @@rameshrajput9209 As with almost all scanners, it’s best to slick hair back (if long) and otherwise expect the hair areas not to captured fully. Hair is almost always needed to be fixed or re-sculpted in post processing. With shorter hair, the results can be pretty good, and resolve a good clean scan.

    It is cool seeing actual use cases for the tech. I'm looking forward to seeing a possible future video in which the Tommy scan is used to create the head for a Scanners' scene. Thanks for another relaxing video, JP.

    Molding an actor for a likeness can also lead to distortion, as the weight of the materials stretches the features. A scan gets the likeness without pulling the skin, giving less distortion. Nice review, well done.

    Cool product! The resolution seems pretty nice. The moment they include texture scanning as well it will be a game changer. It would immensely speed up the photogrammetry process.

    Good point….and i forgot to demonstrate it! It can indeed record photo texture when scanning - to then stitch and apply a texture map to the scanned mesh. Unfortunately, just ike the extremely expensive super pro 3D scanners, the quality of the stills that make up the finished texture map, are nowhere near the quality you want for high resolution maps…not anything that match the results from photogrammetry. I’m guessing that it’s a processing/ bandwidth issue, as you’d need something like a DSLR quality sensor + optic to be firing 24 MP+ stills at the same (or alternating) rate as the scanner is firing (approx 16FPS). I suspect that Ai will be able to solve the issue pretty soon, as it’s all computational processing…I’m sure Ai can upscale the lower resolution images that are taken with a scanner like this, and also directly use the scan data to add photographic detail into shadows and obscured / missing areas.- JP

    How does this differ from Lidar on a phone?

  • @InCameraTV

    @InCameraTV

    Probably in its resolution and scale accuracy, but you’d have to check the tech specs on the website to compare with LiDAR capable phones.

    Yeah, yeah, that's neat and all, but I just don't have 2-3 grand to spend on someth-... oh... Wait... $350.. €470 in EU? Youknow... That might still be outside a curiosity purchase... But... It definetly is an option to consider if I have a project that needs 3D scanning that exceeds what I can do already with regular photogrammetry. Things are finally getting affordable... Not cheap. But at least it's wothin range for mortals. :)
