The Internet depends on a lot of protocols. I spent a semester in networking and can tell you for a fact that it would be entirely impractical for James May to list and describe every protocol. He covered the basics, and that's about as much as the average viewer will care to remember.
0:28 James May, on James May, on a screen, on a screen, on your screen :3
im genuinely surprised this was uploaded in 1080p back in 2013, well done BBC.

I have heard, that youtube has upgraded the quality on some videos (even if it was uploaded as a 720p video)
Love what you are doing here ;) I found some MUCH needed info. Thank you for putting it out there!!!
"Doctor Doctor" jokes are a genre of jokes I had completely forgotten about until now lol.

MaxVidyStudios they did it in my class, and there’s a homework on it so I’m here again 😄
Also James May thanks so so much for being detailed. I appreciate that. Cause I like to be told everything like a child when I dont know anything about the subject. Its a very good way to teach.
Great visuals again!
I love this. this man gets, and keeps, you interested.
the video editing on head squeeze is one of the best I see on KZread
Sometimes I feel like I only watch these videos for this guy's voice.
Wow, well done!
03:40 Loving the reference there :P

Already knew this just wanted james may to explain it
You got my subscribe, but only because i love James May, and he made a joke about Richard Hammond.
His voice is so relaxing.
James May is this generations James Burke. Keep on informing us in a grown up smart persons way. Thanks, James.

Glad I finally installed my AOL disk I got in the mail from 1995. This internet is great. The dial tone takes a little getting used to though.

Classic scoot thing to say haha to be fair the video doesn't have much on "the warriors of the net" :p
Loving the Richard Hammond joke!
I had this question before. But never asked it. But im so happy that u did. Thanks so very much. I am sort of very very bad with all this technology. I dont know much about it.
I am looking at the individual frames printed out with subtitles, conveniently stored in four ring binders.
Which video was Captain Slow talking about Clarkson. Whats the name
LOL because James may says so. I click the subscribe button for every video he does here
Yes!!
Oh I like James!
The VCR version just happens to be linked with the youtube comments right?
0:22 nah mate I'm watching this on a stone
Thought this was a really well explained answer. Sure the thing about cache servers was perhaps a bit much at the beginning, but then you don't get trolls (such as myself) picking you up about it. Also, I suppose you forgot to mention that I don't simply connect to B directly, but through C, D and E etc - again, maybe a bit much!
How are youtube videos played? Does it download a video then play it, or does it ask for the information frame by frame wile you are playing it?
god i miss the old VHS tapes. they were the best
love that t-shirt!
The movie "Rain Man" is about a sevant with an incredible ability to remember things.
yes
I have had a look and I can't find any solid prof that it is either one, so I think you are right.
I'm pretty sure RFC documents call TCP = transmission control protocol is that transfer control protocol at 4:25 a misreading?
Hilarious how he can just make fun of Hammond!
TCP is Transmission Control Protocol not Transfer Control Protocol. Great video!
Underwater tunnel is easy - they make tunnel sections on land, then sink them, so when they land on the "ground", they align to the tunnel shape. Then they just seal it up, and suck the water out.
I'm counting this as revision for my computing exam
2:50 That either reminds me of the Slenderman or Kamaji from Spirited Away :P
On February 3, 1690, the Massachusetts Bay Colony issued the first paper money in the U.S., in order to pay for its war. Massachusetts was a truly pioneering colony when it came to money. They were also the first to mint their own silver coins in 1652, despite a British law against it. The paper money created in 1690 was called a bill of credit, and represented the colony's obligation to the soldiers. The soldiers could spend/trade the colony's IOU just like silver and gold coins.
I have a question: What causes a pulled muscle to happen and why does it take hours to days to heal?
0:25 A screen.....on a screen......on a screen. Screen-ception-ception?
Anyone else notice that at the 2 minute mark the screen starts tilting back and forth?

I meant 12 numbers as in total of 12 numbers. only 1-254 can be used in the host bits while 0 and 255 are reserved for network address and broadcast address.
This must be his dream. Explaining things to people who are listening
Um, IP addresses have 12 digits, not 11 - four sets of three.

***** An ipv4 address can be as small as 4 digits actually it can range from 0.0.0.0 to 255.255.255.255

+gtx970videos it's always 12. 0.0.0.0 is actually 000.000.000.000 10.1.1.1 is actually 010.001.001.001

You have made a bit of a mistake... Although there are no dejure standards regarding Protocol Data Unit (PDU) descriptors at the various stages of encapsulation/ decapsulation, the defacto descriptor of a TCP PDU is 'Segment'.
2:50 this realy creeps me out
most sections are pre-made and dropped down into the water, they are just moved into place by dive teams and such
What's the benefit / purpose os shadow ??
Hammond was a surprise though!
@2:51 kamaji the boiler mans first job
Top Gear !
very carefully
James you bring me back to the computer networking class, fall asleep
nice.
It means your connection is encrypted using a public/private key encryption technique, and that a trusted third party server has verified via a SSL certificate that you really are connected the website that you think you're connected to, and not some other server. This stuff is insanely complicated, we're going to need a lot more than one video to explain it. ;)
MAY 9000... O God, I lost it at that. XD
The actual answer to the title starts at 3:13
Hyper Text Transfer Protocol Secure, it just means that regular "internet transmissions" are encrypted while they are being sent to you, you will often see paypal, ebay and some parts of facebook encrypted with h.t.t.p.s to make it difficult for hackers to steal your personal data. Hope this helped :D
They more you learn about TCP/IP and the OSI layers, the more amazing the Internet is as quick as it is.
hey James, how does a rotary engine work???
Where can you buy James shirt? It´s brilliant.
VHS? What's that? Is it like a casette tape? :p lol
the picture if from an old youtube layout... so yeah i love osu so much :) it's a nice substitute since they stopped making guitat hero
Peep Show! Thumbs upping you guys for that XD
lol I seen the one where Hammond went to a nascar event in the US and nobody knew who he was
Make a shirt with you own on it. Achievement unlocked.

what does "you don't have the memory of rain man?" mean? (the rain man part)
Hello Dave
Also as it warns you if you don't see that especially when you click on an email link then the link will be a spam link, normally with the aim to steal your personal info such as credit card details.
