**What are lobbyists?
Lobbyists get paid to try to convince lawmakers to adopt or oppose policies on behalf of their clients. There are thousands of different groups that have lobbyists either working directly for them or hiring lobbyists from lobbying firms. And these groups can range from big corporations and trade associations to public interest nonprofits.
**Are lobbyists bad?
Lobbying itself is generally thought of as a fundamental right guaranteed by the first amendment in the constitution as the right to petition the government for a redress of grievances. At its core, lobbying is just a way for citizens to engage with lawmakers on issues that are important to them. Most of the critiques around lobbying have to do with how money is involved. It’s really expensive to run a political campaign, and one way that lobbyists can get facetime to talk to politicians is to throw big fundraisers for them, and lobbyists themselves can actually donate to political campaigns. And most of the biggest spenders on lobbying represent business interests. This raises equity issues about what types of organizations can afford to hire lobbyists and ultimately whose voices influence policy.
**How does lobbying work?
A lot of lobbying is building relationships with politicians and finding out who has the interest and power to help with your cause. And money isn’t the only currency in lobbying, politicians also pay attention to how many people are calling their offices and care about an issue, how many people are sending emails or writing notes about an issue. Getting facetime with politicians and their trusted advisors is extremely important when it comes to lobbying,
*Do lobbyists for non-corporate causes ever win?
Yes, even though corporate interests outspend public interest groups- lobbying can still work to bring about change that isn’t necessarily pro-business. For example, The Nature Conservancy, an environmental nonprofit successfully lobbied for congress to permanently fund the Land and Water Conservation Fund, which is a pot of money reserved for conservation efforts to offset environmental damages caused by the oil and gas industry.

For election reform. Remove the arbitrary cap on the number of Congressional representatives, bring the ratio of people to reps from 750k to 1 down to 50k to one, and possibly eliminate geographic districting, and, using the 14th amendment, link state apportionment to voter participation rates.

If people stopped saying "let's evict the lobbyists out of Washington" and start saying "let's put our lobbyists into Washington" :-) Why it's so difficult for people to organise, right? So much to be gained from organised labour - and from organised politics as well.

"It's incredibly expensive to run for office," but with free internet and social media, wouldn't it be easy to publicize your platform? The cost of expensive 30-second TV ads, where you learn nothing about the candidate except a catchphrase or a smear of the opposing politician, seems ineffectual.

@chuco915C we should have an official group of government whose job it is to take law requests and submit those requests in an official manner and then the people vote on those ideas in a public and governmental forum. The most popular ones get passed on to legislators. The people who submit the requests should get paid a fixed salary by the government. The people who come in to voice their ideas should pay a small service fee (like $10) to submit an idea and that money goes back to the government as taxes.

Surely the most obvious improvement would be to ban lobbyists from doing any work that could benefit politicians and government officials. So that includes fundraisers but also any gifts, holidays, favours for family members, offers for future jobs etc.

The thing is, can you even enforce it? I agree with you that forbidding it would be a signal. But ultimately there could be Big Tobacco Lobbyist and Big Tobacco Fundraiser and both these guys will claim to be independent (and protected by free speech). But when the politician help the Lobbyist, the Fundraiser will help the politician.

@@miroslavhoudek7085 i'd be hopeful that a just society could do some investigation into groups that try to legally evade their real purpose. it is just baffling to me though that money could at all affect the judgement of legal decisions when money is completely irrelevant to the argument of the decisions themselves.. the only people concerned about the relevance of the money in legal decisions are the lawyers and the judges, which is literally a scam of money, and justice.

@@ruan13o oh no, I agree. But markets are a real thing and you can't prevent corporations from 1) having money and 2) finding a way to spend it in their interest. You can't so simply outlaw it because they can always hire the smartest people to avoid the laws, bend the laws, find loopholes in them. My humble (truly humble) opinion is that solution is not some active minority - like you and me - somehow making a law (or two) that will fix the world. The only true solid permanent solution is majority of citizens becoming aware and active and they will 1) spend their own money to have lobbyist work for us. And we are so much more powerful than corporations can ever dream of. Because we have money but we also 2) have legs to walk to the points of power in large numbers and voice our opinions - and notably 3) we also have all the votes. Also also 4) corporations are owned by some of us through direct stock ownership or through hedge funds that should listen to what we want. Not take our money and go on a power trip with them. There's a saying that people have the government they deserve. If people are willing to bow their heads or get manipulated, they will get what they deserve. And you can't really legislate your way out of it ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ People have to start pulling their weights, spend their money, do the learning etc.

  • @connecticutaggie
    @connecticutaggie Жыл бұрын

Myles, great video. I loved how you informed without painting an overly simplistic view. Insight about about Lobbyists can come from a similar to another job that is often villainized - Medical Sales Reps. Though Medical Sales Reps can (at times) use inappropriate means to influence a sale, they also provide information, training, and support that doctors need to be successful. I am sure when you go to your doctor I am sure you want them to provide you with the best treatment but so much has changed since they left medical school and even medical school can't train them on everything. That is often where a Medical Sales Rep comes in - he is an expert on the medicines he represents and can help a doctor understand what they are and where they can be used so he can make the best decision for you. The best Lobbyists can do the same thing for a Congressman. Congressmen can't be an expert on everything and the public almost certainly is not. Issues are complex and if he only listened to superficial he could very easily sponsor a bill that sounded great on the surface but actually was disastrous for his constituents.

The downside of lobbying is that people with money/power always have longer breath and more opportunities. But let's say we keep lobbying, what could help? For example like back in Greek to get random politicians. This way you start from 0 every time a new election happens so that you cannot take one politician and hope (or even help) that they stay for years and work for your interests. Through the randomness you don't have to fight (and loose ressources on that) for reelection.

Lobbying isn’t as lucrative as it sounds - for every registered lobbyist in DC that’s at least doing okay, there’s another working for a smaller organization who’s barely making a livable wage. A big reason why is supply and demand - there are a lot more qualified people interested in government relations and public policy jobs than there are jobs available. Source: I’m a lobbyist.

What I didn't understand was the line "I don't have any political currency, I'm not up for reelection" Why would somebody who's term is up looking for votes have political currency? I would think someone with political currency would be someone who is head of a committee or has decision making authority. If you where to say that the guy who is up for reelection has political currency because he needs the votes and thus is willing to push a bill the voters want, then the political currency would be the willingness of a member to push a law. I'm missing something here, who can put their two cents in?

Personally I would like to lobby for a bill that would establish additional tax penalties for publicly traded corporations as well as tax incentives for privately owned corporations. This is because I believe publicly traded corporations are put under immense pressure by shareholders and their own greed to pursue short-term profits over long-term sustainability of the company. This pursuit of short-term profits ends up creating a majority of the problems that we face globally including (but not limited to) pollution, shrinkflation and lack of consumer ownership. If they must go this way of seeking unlimited monetary growth at the cost of everything else then they damn well better pay for it in much higher taxes. We cannot ban public trading because it is a global phenomenon. Taxation is the next best thing.
