How Does Furosemide Work? Understanding Loop Diuretics
The video contains a simple and visual explanation of how furosemide and bumetanide, loop diuretics, work to encourage the kidneys to excrete more water and sodium. We cover some basics about how the nephron works and look in detail at the action of loop diuretics on the sodium-potassium-chloride co-transporter on the ascending loop of the loop of Henle. We also talk about the indications, some practical tips on using loop diuretics, adverse effects and contraindications.

Every patient put in these meds should be shown a vid like this. It definitely helps to understand the meds and motivate taking them routinely even though the constant bathroom trips are annoying

Completely agree
I've never seen this concept explained so well. What's missing though is another effect of accumulation of potassium in the cell and its subesquent diffusion into the tubule - this causes positive membrane potential which causes Ca2+ and Mg2+ to be secreted, an important effect of loop diuretics.
This is by far the most helpful video I have watched in all of medical school. There are so many videos available but only this one broke down the small details that make it confusing. Thank you a million times.
Nicely put. One of the simplest explanations of the Loop of Henle I've seen! Really wonderfully done.

Great Teacher! Thanks for Teaching! I leaned this in school about 30 years ago. Am highly impressed about your clear explanation about " Function of the Kidney" .Thank you!!!
Wow, now that's teaching !!! 👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿. That was clearly explained. You didn't miss a thing. Subscribed and video shared to fellow nursing students. Thank you.
Best, clearest explanation I've encountered so far. Great job.
As a 3rd year student I've had many patients taking furosemide and it helped them a lot, but I had not done a more detailed study into it than now. Thanks a lot, this video is very helpful

this medicine does not work in reducing fluid, it gives renal failure and damages the kidneys. Some Doctors are stupid.

Zero to finals, thanks so much! My doc is a professor, unfortunately, i learn so much with your channel than I ever do from my onco. God bless you dear! I've been dealing with that problem for years because my lymph system has been destroyed, my oncologist told me there's no solution. I don't have heart failure, but my left kidney can become big sometimes and my chest can be full of liquid, I can hear a weazing sound from my left lung. My legs are big and my left arm as well. To the contrary, my right arm becomes skinnier every day. I wonder if furosemide would help me.
Just started my furosemide today. This video = very helpful.
Thanks for the video, a very clear concept that I need for my assignment 🙂
This is great. Awesome explanation
I had a test yesterday at 9 am. I watched this video at 7 am. There was a question on Furosemides and I could answer this question pretty well thanks to this wonderful 😊😊
Thank you so much by for making this so simple to understand.

Thank you for the well-explained lecture. Could you please explain why lasix increases urinary sodium while decreasing urine osmolality. Lasix is used to treat hyponatremia in SIADH by increasing serum sodium and getting rid of more water than sodium but the fact that lasix increases urine sodium while decreasing urine osmolality seems contradictory. I appreciate your time in answering this or directing me to a resource in advance.
thanks a mil, understand that better now!
Thank you,I wondered why the impermeable to water thick as sending loop requires furosemide, you cleared my questions
Beautifully explained

That was clear and helpful. I have a question that I wonder if you can answer for me. Why would a loop diuretic be prescribed for an elderly person with hyponatremia (when hyponatremia occured due to trazodone or tramadol)? How does this help?
Wonderful presentation 👏 👌 thank you.

Can you tell me why loop diuretics are contraindicated in hepatic failure??
My blood pressure is starting to come down. Diastolic now in the low 120's as low as 109 yesterday. This has started after starting Turmeric. Ive been taking Lisinipril, Coreg & Isosorbide for over a year and generally BP was out of control even though I lost 80lbs, exercise & fruits, vegetables, nuts & ocasional chicken & fish. I want to ween off the Furosemide to see if my hearing improves. Does anyone know of a natural alternative? I'm also taking Vitamin C, Iron, B12, Ashwagandha, CBD Oil & Lions Mane Mushroom Extract.
Thank you, very much ........it help me a lot....😊😊

Could u explain how cardioplegia work?
Can u plz... upload one vdo on "urinary acidifiers and alkalizers mechanism"
I undrestand that after using loop diuretics, the natrium and water just stay in the tubule. But why aren' t they reabsobed further in the distal tubule, where the transport mechanism is not affected?
@ZeroToFinals
5 жыл бұрын
Good question. there will be some that is reabsorbed in the distal tubule, however this is only a small amount compared with what is reabsorbed in the loop of Henle. The distal tubule does not have the capacity to reabsorb a large amount of sodium and water
how much time lasix take to work its been 1 week result are very slow my both leg were swollen and ankle and cafs are swollen are still there .... please tell me how much time it take to reduce proper...and after workout my foot is Normal ... so please tell me what to do
Thanks
Thx
