BRIEF HISTORY OF CANALS IN UK
The history of canals in Britain dates back to the late 18th century when the canal era began, transforming transportation and trade across the country. The construction of canals was spurred by the need to efficiently transport goods, especially in the industrial heartlands where roads were often inadequate. The Bridgewater Canal, completed in 1761, is considered the first true canal in Britain and served as a model for subsequent projects.
During the peak of canal construction in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, Britain saw a network of canals spread across the landscape, connecting major cities and industrial centers. Iconic waterways such as the Grand Union Canal, linking London to Birmingham, and the Leeds and Liverpool Canal, connecting the east and west coasts, played crucial roles in the transportation of goods like coal, iron, and textiles. However, with the advent of railways in the mid-19th century, canal usage declined, leading to many canals being abandoned or repurposed. Despite this decline, today, many canals in Britain are preserved as heritage sites, offering recreational opportunities and glimpses into the country's industrial past.
HISTORY OF US DOING VAN LIFE
We have owned two campervans, and have been doing full time vanlife in the uk for 3 years.
Our first van was a transit and the most recent camper van conversion that's up for raffle is a Citroen Relay 2015 Luton (used to be a removal van) but now is a fully off-grid home

Hi. We live on a 70' narrowboat in a really nice marina. Mooring cost is approx 4000 pa. This is reduced when we go travelling in our old Transit camper. Off next week for 3months in greece. It does take a while to get used to the slow pace, but when you do you truly appreciate it. Maintenance is not that frightening if you do it regularly. If you need any info, please pm. Great video by the way 👍

I love a narrow boat holiday. I went on my first trip with school when I was 13. 2 boats, 2 teachers (1 a nun) and 16 girls. I loved it. The best bit was going through the locks. Loved it so much we convinced our 6th form history teachers to take us again. Been on holidays with friends since then. Absolutely amazing. It’s a slow pace, but great for thinking space and getting to appreciate nature. I hope you enjoy it, you slow down, and there’s room to do your yoga indoors if it rains.Stay safe and happy travels xx

Oh yes the yoga. Liam and Janine did their yoga ttc in India. Perhaps some retreats on a narrow boat would be great for them in between their faster pace trips ❤❤❤❤❤❤ i am more of a slow traveler but not sure of a narrow boat as I like living in Indian culture amongst the locals and deepening into their way of life. Sounds as though u have had some epic experiences on boats hun. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

I'm concerned about the coming costs of canal life. The costs are about to go through the roof. Obviously someone has seen the opertunity to make serious money out of the canal system and the government are pulling out of subsidising it. I'm selling my boat as it's about to become unaffordable for us and I suspect many many others.

I love our narrowboat, you can enjoy life in the slow lane or go into the city, there's lots of rail connections if you need to go anywhere faster. I read the comments on costs going up but it's the same no matter which way of life you choose, the good thing about boat life for us is if you don't like the area or neighbours just move your home, it's really cosy in winter as well. The majority of boaters are great people always willing to help or advise, it's a good community spirit in my experience xx

It was refreshing to see narrow boating from the perspective of two total novices. For anyone who has never done it before and was perhaps thinking of even just a holiday on a boat then I think your film would give them the confidence to try it. Seeing the fears you had initially and the simple mistakes made shows that it is ok to have those fears and mistakes happen but you manage. Excellent video. My wife and I are in our 70's and have never had a narrowboat holiday. The other half would love to try it but if I am honest even at 71 years old it still seems a little too slow a life for me.

You prefer a faster pace. For example, traveling in Pete across India!!!! *i think the boat is a great retreat space when you want downtime, a holiday for yoga, cooking, slowing down connection with nature etc. *You two are very brave. You are on the road, on the canal and selling your home and transport. You are in limbo with no fear ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

Had a few enjoyable narrowboat holidays but don’t think it’s for you guys full time. Jannine wouldn’t survive the winters, out on deck steering or managing locks in the cold, rain, wind, snow 😱 Also you’d be quite restricted getting around anywhere from isolated moorings. Lots for you to think about 🤔

Hi guys! So glad to see you tried out boat life for a week 🥰 I would say the costs you were told are quite high. It does depend where you want to moor of course but there are other mooring options that would be a lot cheaper. If you continuously cruise like we do the costs are pretty low. But yes the maintenance costs can definitely fluctuate! Xx

This time of the year and the autumn is beautiful on the canals. BUT, the time to decide if you want to do it long term is during the summer and winter. In the winter many of the canals are closed for maintenance between December and March so you can be stuck for months in the same spot. In the summer you face queue's for most of the locks and these can involve hours of waiting. Don't make any decisions based on your experiences in spring and autumn.....

I love this video! Brings back wonderful memories of a family holiday back in the late 80's :D I steered a 72ft boat up the Severn in full flood, we were only just allowed to go on to the river (it was part of the Stourport Ring). Didn't like mooring up and sleeping near the cities but the countryside was stunning. I've often thought I'd like to live on a narrow boat, I would dig the slowness. Seeing the Kingfisher was a treat, such shy birds....thanks for sharing this adventure, it cheered me up and made me smile. Good luck with all of your plans and just a gentle suggestion, Janine might benefit from some hypnotherapy to help with her confidence (if you don't mind me saying), you both have done so much, she deserves to feel accomplished and proud of herself. Lots of love xXx

We tried narrowboating in Broxbourne Herts for the first time in 2005 (before doing 2 years in a campervan). We had the extra complication of having the BBC cameras with us all the time for the short-lived series "Holidays at Home". The 2 daytimes were great but sleeping in a mouldy environment made me ill! The BBC crew of course booked into a posh hotel!. We visited Chester in our campervan as well and it is one of our favourite towns with good parking in Little Roodie, a good museum, the ancient walls and a lovely old town to explore.

Hi to you both, enjoyed the video, just a little bit of insight about the area you were, you have Nantwich, middlewich, leftwich and Northwich the wich part in the names means salt mine, that's the reason for the canal to transport salt, out of the mines,👍

Wow what a surprise! I did not expect a houseboat at all, but I must say it does look lovely, cosy and very calming! I'm really enjoying seeing you try different housing options while having fun and exploring the world! This episode also reminds me of a memory I'm particularly fond of (spending a week on a houseboat in Ireland with my family when I was 13, the last vacation I got to spend with my father before he died) so thank you for that! ❤ I hope you soon reach your goal with the Morgan raffle🙏 Countless blessings to you both!

Great video and interesting hearing your thoughts on boatlife vs van life. We've loved vloging our boat life over the past few years but are now considering transitioning to lorrylife in a converted 7.5t wagon. I think your everyday costs of living on a narrowboat can be a lot cheaper, depending on your boat and how it's set up. 90% of all the electric and hot water we use comes from our solar panels and our heating costs are next to nothing as we always get free wood. We're out on the cut all year round so dont have to worry about mooring costs. As you mentioned, the only thing you have to worry about is maintenence costs, as if you're not very handy it can soon mount up if you have to pay for the more basic jobs.

I think Liam would hate being on boat. He’s too restless and life would be too slow for him. Most people live on them narrowboats don’t go anywhere. Great blog.❤

I think you definitely tried it at the best time of year. Locks and finding moorings are very different during the busy summer months and not everyone who hires a boat is as humble, careful and respectful as you were. All the same, a canal boat holiday, as you experienced, is the best way to slow down and relax that I know, as long as you pick your season.

I hope unlike me you use cool water in a hot water bottle. As I had a terrible accident with mine and would never use one again. I found a better option I now put a blanket (not an electric) over me first before sheet or quilt. It has seen me through winters and works very fast. Love your new boating idea.

So pleased that you decided to have a go at canal life and it's really interesting watching you get to grips with it. I've never stayed in a barge myself, but live in a beautiful part of High Peak Derbyshire called Buxworth that has a historic canal basin, which has many boating visitors all year round. There are some great pubs round here, like the Navigation Inn and some nice cafe's, restaurants and a top Indian take-away called Ikrams close to the Whaley Bridge Canal Basin. There are also many stunning walks up the peaks, like Chinley Churn, Eccles Pike and the Goyt Valley. I'm really looking forward to watching all your adventures on the water to see where you go! :)
