The clutch doesn’t add tension. It adds resistance to the cage, stopping it bouncing. There is no extra tension on the chain

Bro tension and resistance are so damn close in words I’m not sure why you’ve got your panties in a wad about it. “WaH TeNsIoN OnLy ApLiEs To ThE ChAiN” And bruh let me tell you, more resistance to the cage ultimately means more tension on the chain, not static tension, but it’s eventual tension. Sorry bro this comment just struck a nerve because this is a completely satisfactory video and you’re just dogging on it for no good reason.

How do I make sure that whatever brakes and rotors I buy will fit? Also, I need new shifters and derailer and how to tell what will fit my bike. I need a rear wheel too because it’s slightly bent but it works for now. Other than that bike works pretty well although there is a clicking in second gear out of the 3 big ones. I keep it on the biggest gear to make that go away but just last night there is a low click, more like a thump sound coming from left pedal cranking side with every pedal rotation. @@childdestroyer6939 What she said is wrong, that’s completely normal and obvious because it restricts the cages movement so when you shift its a much stiffer movement than what it’s like without it on.

He said "shifts better" not "is easier to shift". Those are two different things. The derailleurs are designed to be shifted *with* the clutch on, so shouldn't "shift better" with the clutch off. Shifting is *slightly* more difficult with the clutch turned on (because of the increased tension) but the longer lever paddles are designed to make up for that increased resistance

If your derailleur is more than 4 or 5 years old, it might not. Newer XTs have the clutch though.

I think they are only on relatively recent XT and XTR mountain bike derailleurs. I don't have one on my older 9 speed XT.

You should have the clutch ON unless you're removing the rear wheel. It decreases the likelihood of dropping your chain and it's designed to be on when riding.
