It's not farfetched to train yourself to listen to a faster voiceover. It may sound silly but try watching a few KZread videos in fast forward, at first you may struggle but it starts getting easier to understand what they're saying. If you keep doing that for several years, it becomes normal and easy. If it was impossible to understand, why would it even be an option on her phone accessibility settings in the first place? Also, she said herself that it was practice. She pretty upfront with her audience about what she does during her everyday life, it makes no sense for her to then lie about understanding a voiceove.

Hi. I am totally blind. I have been since birth. I have my voiceover speech rate at 100%, just like Lucy. So no, it wasn’t sped up in the editing process. It is actually that fast. And yes, blind people just get adapted to a fast speaking rate on our screen readers over time. It takes years of practice, but it is more efficient to have a fast speaking rate. Does that make sense?

Hey Lucy, I’m legally blind too, but I’m from the south in America so I had to slow my phone down a bit. I have only been going blind for past 2 years so I am new to all of this and you are helping so much. Thanks from Virginia

Just as an experiment one day, I tried slowing my speech way down to *normal* and I spent twenty minutes doing things like reading e-mails and texts. God, it was painful!

I used to get the train home from uni a lot that required a connection. One time the trains were all super delayed and we all started talking to each other (*shudder*) but in doing so, a couple of us realised we were all going to the same place so we stuck together... one of the guys was blind and he showed us how he uses his phone :) it was amazing to see how accessible phones can be... still not 100% accessible though...

For those wondering how she understands synthetic speech at such a rapid rate, this comes with a lot of time and practice. Start out slowly and increase speech rate across time. We all have our preferences for how fast or slow we like our phones, tablets and computers to speak. I like mine at anywhere between 70 and 75%. Any faster and I have to scroll back over things to reread them properly.
