How Doctor Who's Missing Episodes Came Back [Part 3]

Фильм және анимация

Today we discuss how the Jon Pertwee episodes came back, why some exist in colour and others don't, and how colour was brought back!
This is the last in a three part series, which is a spiritual successor to my Missing Episodes documentary series.

Hi friends! Just a note, the colour restoration is a LOT more complicated in reality, but I have simplified it to make it more accessible to those who have no experience with the process. Some generalisations may be present for this reason. Thanks for being nice to me :)

Thanks josh for a thoroughly enjoyable three part series on the the return of the missing doc who episode s and colourisation of the pertwees stories. Not dwelling too long on each story and how it was found it was but just perfect in delivering how they came back to us .would be great to see those rumoured 6 episode s returned as well .

One minor error: The references to "BBC Canada" are incorrect - the BBC Canada station did not exist until 2001, long after the finds described here. The first find belonged to TVO Ontario, one of Canada's provincial broadcasters, and the second and third sets belonged to CKVU, a then-independent station based in Vancouver, British Columbia. Neither station had any affiliation to the BBC.

I was the same. I've got a substantial gap in my Who knowledge of 3rd to 5th Doctors, minus the odd episode such as Earthshock. But during the early 90's they started to repeat the Classic Era. Patrick Troughton became my favourite Classic Doctor, around this time. But I was always confused as a kid why he was in so few episodes. I’m 44, and watched my first Doctor Who around 1982 (and haven’t stopped). I’m in Canada, we got an American PBS station and they broadcast the 3rd, 4th and 5th Doctors up to whatever was current. Then it would loop back to Pertwee, Baker, Davison. We also got the omnibus edition (all episodes edited together in a 90 minute story for 4 episodes. Mainly I wanted to mention that whenever they played Invasion of the Dinosaurs, it started right at episode 2, in the cliffhanger from episode 1. It always confused me as a kid when I would see this episode - I thought the TV station made a mistake! I remember when they finally found the first episode of the Dino boys and premiered it on our local PBS, saying it had been found in Hong Kong or Singapore, I can't remember. But that it would only be in back and white. Its good to know they have recovered some of the color information and maybe with color restoration, they will be able to match and colorize properly. Considering the blue is the only component missing, I would think this might be easier in some ways. Plus they have the other episodes to work from as reference. So amazing all the hard work people have done around the world and at the BBC. What a great series, and so well produced! Thanks for making this for everyone to learn about those missing Dr. Who episodes and why that is.

It is truly astonishing that episodes were still vanishing in the 1970s, when Doctor WHO had clearly become iconic. However, DW was not the only victim: some episodes of Doomwatch went missing, as did a number of the black & white era of the excellent ITV spy series Callan. I was pleasantly surprised that Moonbase Three, which was done in 1973 by Barry Letts and Terrance Dicks, is still available.

I have always been grateful for the existence of the Jon Pertwee era in full colour today as I am old enough to remember a time just 30 years ago when this was still not the case.

Thanks so much for this riveting series, Josh. It was amazingly well researched and presented. I'm in awe of all the people both within and outside the Beeb (Ian Levene etc) who have been instrumental in preserving this incredible TV series. Your well deserved nod to them brought a lump to my throat. Excellent work all round. XX

Another lovely documentary. Thanks Josh! I'd love to see you cover the production of the reconstructions, including some of your own ones. Many are every bit as ingenious as the BBC's recovery efforts. I find the efforts people have gone to in order for us to enjoy these episodes again quite fascinating. In the 80s I remember there were many stories that didn't exist at all and we had to wait for the novelisation to experience them. Then the audio recordings surfaced and steadily the episodes have come back bit by bit in some form or other. It's an astonishing story that keeps on unfolding. Thanks for celebrating it.

Am so glad you have made a welcome comeback with your awesome documentaries about the missing episodes. I think plenty of focus has been made on the missing Hartnell/Troughton episodes but , because we have them all, the Pertwee era has been skimmed over and not discussed as much. Yet again I found this , and the other two instalments highly entertaining, informative and wonderfully weaved together. A joy from beginning to end . I love your documentaries and what better way to settle down with a cup of tea on a chilly Winter UK day than in your visual company. Big thanks for what you do, as I now know first hand , how much effort it takes to put a programme together. It was your good self and Clever Dick Films channel that inspired me to have a go at doing something similar in the first place and i'm still going - you still continue to do so. I hope we dont get R.S.I in our Autumn years but I guess its worth suffering for our art 😁. Keep it up Mr Snares. Be safe, be well and be yourself. Crab Apple 🦀🍏

Josh, I started watching Dr. Who when it was shown on public tv here in the states (Maryland to be exact) back in the 70's. I remember them foundry and even my youngest daughter remember some of the Jon Pertwee episodes with fond memories since they were still being shown until into the eighties until the series was cancelled. Watching it on Public TV (a partially funded public enterprise, the other by the US Govt which by now reduced much of their funding but still enthusiastically supported by public donations) was the only way one could watch Dr Who. All of these folks who spent their time and energy searching out these missing episodes and the teams that painstakingly restored color to the black and white copies should all be given a Knighthood !

More things I didn't know! I had no idea that so many of Jon Pertwee's episodes only existed in black and white to start with. I don't actually mind watching black & white (it can help with some off the less special of the special effects) but it's nice to see things in colour. Once again, a great video with so much info. Thanks, Josh! :-)

I'm pretty sure I've seen Invasion of the Dinosaurs Episode One broadcast in Australia in colour around the old broadcast timeslot of Saturday or Sunday lunchtime in March 1985. My memory though is foggy with Death to the Daleks episode one in black and white though, I can neither confirm nor deny. The Time Warrior is my favourite of the entire season eleven which was next broadcast in 2004 in a complete classic series re-run on the ABC.
