If you haven't read it, please read it. I was so upset that I was in a grocery store when I got to the end. I wanted to jump up and down because it was so amazing!! Even so, people looked at me weird because they could still tell that I was smiling like a fool behind my mask. Lol ITS SO GOOD!!!

I usually don’t know the back story of at least 60% of Lindsay’s snark in anything she does, but I’m 💯 here for it.

Speaking as a guy who publishes in the indie scene and has been a "best seller" a few times on various lists, you are 100% correct that best-seller lists are primarily a marketing tool. It's not something that has any real meaning and plenty of lists exist to just make an astroturf demand. But congrats on being the list, Lindsay!

Amazon actually got the rights to serialization. But Peacock pre bought the movie rights. So rights are a complete mess right now.

You know, I would read a book with a funny title like that. Just to see if the book is as funny as the title.

I remember an analysis from 10-15 years ago that concluded while Oprah's club is really good for the titles she features, it didn't do much for the publishing industry as a whole. Turns out there's a finite amount of regular book buyers, and Oprah doesn't really create more readers, she just directs the spending patterns of a significant portion of them.

As a audiobook addict and dyslexic, my view of this is kind of wierd to look at since my selection is more limited, and my distribution is even more limited, because I cant ever see a "Oprah book club" sticker and I don't care about the nyt bestsellers, I care about what has an audiobook right now.

Kind of in the same boat but i would walk through a bookstore sometimes and take note of new or interesting looking books. But in the end it comes down to "is the narrator good"? And so many times the answer is "no, god no, did they even listen to this? This person made money sounding like a nightly news trainwreck?!"

If anything you're probably more affected by publishers' 'we paid a lot for this so we expect it to do well' attitude. The books that get audiobooks on or shortly after release are the ones the publishers expect to do well. And for other books it will depend on how well they sell - so your choices are probably affected by Oprah's book club even if you don't realise it.

Ive noticed the quality of naarrators has gone up A lot recently. Also an audibook only fanatic. I can't remember the last time i rejected a book bc of the narrator. It used to be often but it's getting rarer and rarer

I currently work in a used bookstore and while the furor has died down it's still quietly selling hand over fist. We buy a couple copies a week and they sell within a day or two each time. I think the last time a book stayed this popular for this long was The Da Vinci Code.

I read it a while back without knowing how crazily hyped it was, and hearing that it's STILL being hyped is...weird. The prose was excellent but the story itself was painfully average and well-worn, and I personally dislike open endings when it comes to crime novels (even if the characters are supposed to matter more than the whodunit). As a semi-decent story being incredibly rendered I'd understand a certain amount of hype and maybe an award or two, but this is ridiculous.

As a southern I'm just pissed they use the word "crawdad". Never met a southerner in my life who didn't all them "Crawfish" or "Crayfish", despite living all over the south for decades. It's a very northern word, that for some reason northerners all seem to think southerners say.

@@MidLa23 Yeah, "the south" is a very vague term, it's by no means a monolith. Even within my state it varies a lot by whether you're in a more urban area or not. I grew up around Chapel Hill, NC and people from this area don't usually sound "southern", meanwhile go half an hour outside of town and you can find plenty of people asking to borrow a pay-en and saying they'll see you on mundy.

I treat Lindsay's videos as a podcast so often that sometimes a click a new video like this and for a moment I'm struck like "oh yeah, she's beautiful, I forgot" In related news I'm very gay

Boy this really takes away my desire to try and be a writer.

If your goal is to be a bestseller, you should probably re-evaluate why you write. it’s worth writing even if you don’t make a living off it immediately; many writers don’t have their big breakthrough for a long time. Sometimes decades.

@Anthony Leonhart To my knowledge, most authors who aren’t Dan Brown, Brandon Sanderson, JK Rowling, Rick Riordan (in other words, big name) do not make enough out of their books to do this full time. They either have a full time job or do extra work on the side to supplement their income. Not to say that it is impossible to be a full time writer, but for most people it definitely takes years to be able to get to that point, and even then things can be difficult. For the most part, fiction writers are not in it for the money, but because they like telling stories.

I saw Lindsay Ellis and “How Do You Write a Best-Seller” so I, of course, 100% thought it was going to be a how-to video from her 😂

It's a bit unfair that the publishers decide. It makes me wonder how many good books/author careers died just because some Karen or Jonathan didn't want give enough effort/attention to someone.

To be fair, they have to make money and sometimes talent isn't a guarantee for that. You also have to consider that in this day and age, talent is plenty but chances are most of them wrote similar stories. Publishers have to choose which story stand out the most, and that is usually more about undiscovered genre than anything else.

Also while it may not be fair it's hard to imagine a system where there is no selection in advance. I work for a literary agent and we get A LOT of manuscripts of widely varying quality. Add to that the manuscripts that get send to publishers directly. And even if they had space in their program for everybody - which would be a loosing game, probably even if you turned it into some kind of book on demand thing - they simply couldn't spend the same marketing resources on everyone. Is that fair? Absolutely not. Do publishers make mistakes in their assessments? Absolutely yes. But is it the only way any books can get made? Also yes. A lot of books by smaller publishers that are absolute passion projects can only be made because the publisher also offers and pushes books that will get sold in higher numbers.

To offer some anecdotal observations from years as a collection development librarian: most people only read (or attempt to read) a couple books a year, and even most fairly regular readers tend to stick to the half dozen or so authors they like or the genres they prefer. There are so many books published every month it's hard for any to stand out unless there's a proven track record (i.e. well-established author), a big marketing push, some kind of TV or film adaptation, or a controversy. Otherwise you're spending a lot of time reading reviews or listening to influencers to figure out which of the dozens of new titles coming out this week is the new hidden gem. And most people don't want to invest that much time in planning their leisure time. (Books, save for audiobooks, are different from most other media in that they demand your full attention. You can't just have them on on the background while you do other things. So readers are especially concerned with finding books that don't feel like a waste of time, and that's a large reason why so many stick with the tried and true.)

I identified with the way she felt like an outsider and how she was able to work her ass off for every good thing she had and still be treated like crap by everyone. And I love that she is able to use that against everyone at the end to get her happy ending. It's awesome!! It's a revenge fantasy. I just happen to love those.

I hate how much I love the title Hype House Blood Bath.

I worked at a bookstore once upon a time, and it was pretty interesting to see the rotating selection of bestsellers. Especially because my favorite genres are fantasy and non-fiction psychology, which pretty much never make the cut.

And with one click of the refresh button, this video pops up, and my day is MADE! Thank you Lindsay for your wonderful content! 😁💖🦞

Basically the book business is the same as the art business, who is successful is largely determined by people at the top deciding who is going to become a big name and who isn't, which small artists/writers breaking through being the rare exception to the rule.

The "Where the Crawdads Sing" bit gave me my serotonin for the day

The crawdads book (wow, autocorrect really doesn't like that word) was in Reese Witherspoon's book club. Her production company is also making the film. I'm sure these two facts are entirely coincidental.

My sister and sister-in-law were reading Crawdads for book club, which was reportedly an excuse to drink wine at 2 in the afternoon. Hope that helps!

Great...now I have to go buy "Where the Crawdads Sing" out of curiosity. Thanks to this video, that book will NEVER leave the NYT Bestseller's List.

I clicked on this video hoping I would learn the secrets to getting my own books hundreds and hundreds of more readers. I came away just glad that, while I've never made it onto any bestseller list, my books tend to have good reviews and I've got some devoted fans. Thanks for reminding me of that, LIndsay Ellis and Storied. I appreciate that. I like Where The Crawdads Sing. Also Reese Witherspoon has it on her book club list. And she's also making it into a movie. So she's been promoting it pretty hard.

Oh lord, it's already taken me a while to finish a first draft and now that I almost have I'm about to go to back and essentially remake the whole thing but I've always imagined that the publishing part would be considerably harder... if only due to having to deal with other people and an industry that might not even welcome me. But I try to stay optimistic.

I didn't know anything about it going in and was hugely disappointed. The characters are unrealistic and the plot holes just on a different level.

The last sentence of the Crawdad book is "They stopped singing shortly after plunging into a pot of boiling water. The end" I cried for hours

LOVE Lindsay and I hope she continues to help with Storied/PBS It's Lit. I will be extremely sad if she doesn't come back, but considering what happened to her, I will totally understand. That still doesn't make it any easier to not be sad about her absence. She was both an inspiration and offered cutting edge insight into the world of literature and movies/TV. She will be missed. 😞

@@rohavic She got dog piled one too many times. Over a tweet. Which she had deleted and tried to apologize and explain that she didn't mean like people were (supposedly) taking it. She has a very organized group of people who don’t like her and constantly wait for her to make the slightest mistake. It just got too emotionally overwhelming and decided, for her health's sake, to remove herself from social media indefinitely. It SUCKS. 😕 Having said that, join her Patreon if you want to hear/see some more content. She hinted that she might try to do some Patreon only stuff. But you'll also see her talk about what happened. In fact, the post in question might be publicly available, so check there for the full story about what happened to her. 🙁

The thing about The Great Gatsby was it became a classic kinda by accident.
