How do I know if my MS 170 is soft start or compression release? Not mentioned in the paperwork or manuals though my dealer said it was when I specifically asked for a soft start at the time of sale?
You should just be able to do a series of short strokes and it'll build up tension and just let go on one of the strokes by its self and kick over
Step 1) to start any chainsaw is to set the brake.

For beginners it's a good idea, yes
What is the position of the trigger at start?
Cool, another fiddly spring to fly apart at the worst moment. My old 032 av starts easy enough.

There is the MS 180 and there is the MS180C. Perhaps the 180C is with the easy start.
So, the actual engine turn-over is right at the end of your easy pull? Some guys are saying on KZread that you pull the rope out all the way and let it slam back by itself, which seems crazy to me, and I've been sawing since 1968, I've been having some problems restarting my new 500i after letting the hot saw sit for a few minutes.

I've never let the cord slam back. That wouldn't do anything.

Yeah thats billshit gag video that gained popularity and now other people are making the same video adding chainsaw noise to the video. Releasing the rope doesnt create compression or spark.
Thanks, and God bless you!

guess my does not have these easy pull. Not sure why they would not have that on all of them. Mine is new and it's everything I have to just pull the cord that at best might come out half way but usually not that for. So hard I really just don't use it has much has needed. Tales 4 or 5 tries to just get the cord coming out but by that time the gas is messed up. Should of went electric.

The easy start cost more but its well worth it. Ive had full replacement on both shoulders less than 2 years ago and can start my Stihl easily. :)
PS doesn't seem any different from all the other 'normal saws' I have owned.

The drop and pull method is even used by professionals. Don't tell others how to use a chainsaw or any other small gas engines.
