How do you tune a port? Guitar cab prototyping part 3!

Музыка

More air mass on air spring ponderings, acoustic inductors causing low pass filtering and the double-sided nature of speaker cones. If you're confused, fear not, I'm sure you're not alone - ask questions!

its the one thing that has needed addressing in terms of sonic fidelity alex, removing the guesswork and combining your `sound` empirical experience, with the technical skills you clearly posess!! do not underestimate yourself ,i`m happy watching you wave these fruits of your labour, its genius!

Crumbs, I’ve learned so much watching this! I currently use a cab I made by gutting a 1x10 practice combo, without the amp I could fit a 12” speaker. I put a back on it hinged at the top which opens out, doubling as a tilt back stand so that I could hear the trebles (now I know why that happens! Thanks) rather than blasting them past my feet at the audience, and soundman whilst I can’t hear what I’m playing. I’ve now come to pointing the tilted speaker up at the back wall if possible to disperse the sound. I sometimes play guitar in orchestras too and like to put the speaker backwards, or pointing straight up at the ceiling so that I hear roughly the same as the conductor. My cab is probably much heavier too due to the thickness of the wood, such a cool design!!!

I like the look of a wall of 412’s but your dispersion patter is far superior Alex. Keep pushing the envelope 🤘🏽. Our often misunderstood audiophile minds appreciate the effort sir.

Thanks so much for sharing this WEALTH of information. I would LOVE to get some of these down to Mississippi to show to some blues musicians. Famously, blues guitarists cut ports in their amps so that the band can hear them, even in a bad room with no monitors. A ported cab with some science behind it could make a huge impact and make shows here “Feel” better. Really cool concepts and lovely work. Thanks again!

And +1 on using the PORT to SU-PPORT the top. 😂😂😂

This is the first video i have ever seen where the point of the rear port is to improve mid range and treble frequency...it's usually the opposite meaning '''ported for increased bass response''.Would be nice to hear a sound sample sometime soon.Cheers.

That's why we don't call this system a port because there's a lot more going on. You can hear sound samples of how the AVD cabs work on any of the other guitar cab demo videos on this channel - but we'll be doing more as time allows.

I wanted to comment that when I was a lady in late 60s I turn around my bass cab and fire it at a back wall in larger venues and reverb would stop. Ampeg made a dual firing cab in 1980 and sounded amazing but was not excepted. What do you think?

Loving these videos! Could you build a 4X12 guitar cab that is essentially 2 vertical 2X12 cabs in a single enclosure with a central partition, so a full size head can sit on top and plug both speaker outputs into the cab? I like the sound of the vertical cabs.

2 x Uprising 212v 16ohm cabs side by side, head fits across the top, come out of one cab into the other and your total impedance is 8ohm. Even if they had a 4x12 cab, I don't think the AVD port works if you have 2 in the same enclosure, they'd have to do a single vertical on one side like 2 of the horizontal cabs stacked.

@@tonekilltech you could put two AVD systems into a single cab but placing them side by side yet firing in the same direction would result in a narrowing of horizontal dispersion and less even tone, so it's not something we'd want to do.

We haven't really seen any demand for 4x12" cabs - they tend to have rather an excess of output! I think there's a potential niche of a Radical 212H sized 1x12" so you can have a 4x12" looking rig which is only a 2x12" but split into two halves for easier carrying.

there's another side to this coin and that would be 'in the mix' I'd suggest that a tuned cab that rolls of the lows whilst not sounding as good alone will be a better live sound. Then you can sell 2 😮one for home and one for band mix.

We actually have a low-cut filter built into our AVD cabs - flick a toggle switch to go between “home” and “band” settings, if you see it that way!

@@BarefacedAudio I was thinking from a physical perspective but interesting. Would an adjustable aperture on a port achieve this?

DO YOU HAVE ANY PLANS FOR DEVELOPING A 4X12 CAB?

5:24 the top string of a guitar is E above middle C, so really when you get to the top of a guitar you are only a couple of octaves above middle C, so not quite the extended range of a piano. Most of the squealy lead guitar sounds are harmonics.
