I am a former University lecturer (Australian, born in South Africa) and am older than your parents, but I stand in awe of you young lady, Laura. Your communication skills are superlative. What's more you really know what are talking about and you make every presentation interesting and inspirational. Thank you for not being a drama queen, but rather the queen of gardening! Your presentations provide my wife and I with daily enjoyment and admiration for you and your whole household. Our disappointments occur only when the video finishes. Great work.

I understand what Aaron meant when he said you knew what to say in social situations and I see it in your Mom too. I think it's your deep-rooted kindness and willingness to help when you speak to people even thought you might feel a bit uncomfortable. You have the best kind of good manners by wanting people to feel at ease and comfortable. We see it in all of your extended family :)) Good people

I love when they have these conversations. The differences they are talking about, that Aaron thought were gender-related, are called "Thinking" and "Feeling" in the Myers Briggs Type Indicator, and he is right that there is definitely a gender bias in this area, where men don't want to waste time talking (Thinking types) but get to the point, but women want and need to have time to explain in detail what they are saying (Feeling types). To be clear, women can be Thinking types (I am, which is why I get what Aaron means) and men can be Feeling types, but typically it's the other way. Also, BOTH types think and feel, but it has to do with which one is your preference. I find it a fascinating subject, and it has really helped me understand people better and get along with them. As a high school science teacher, it has been very helpful in teaching my students how to work together in lab groups; when you objectivize the types' characteristics, there's less drama associated with it, so fewer hurt feelings and more understanding of differences.

I get the impression lately that KZread is going thru some issues. Can't really explain it, but I've noticed people really almost begging for likes, subs, etc. I think there is big pressure from KZread for creators to perform well lest they be de-monitized and/or become invisible to the algorithm gods.

Baby Redwoods are a little spindly at that age- surprising considering how tall they get. The tree you received as a gift looked exactly like a redwood to me. They love water and ambient moisture, and also do best with other trees nearby that hold/share moisture (eucalyptus comes to mind). If you plant more trees close to your new redwood I would add other thick evergreens that share moisture. PS- 3 emitters for the redwood until his taproot finds your watertable. ❤🌲🐿

@16.40, Just have to agree with Aaron about this, (no surprise at all there). The gardener's challenge is not so much the growing of plants, but highlighting them in their best moments and figuring how to mask them at times when they aren't shining. Layering is key. Tulips with Daffodils, add Allium and Columbine to follow, plus Lilies, Echinacea, Rudbeckia and Cosmos to carry the show, all tucked in together. This is how I am trying to solve the difficulty of sad-looking fading tulip leaves. I realize you have endless space compared to the gardens I care for, and that makes for a very different effect. Small gardens can be more jumbled together, but grander gardens require a quieter approach in the planning. I cannot express how much I enjoy seeing your gardens evolve and listening to you talk about all of it! Love you guys so much! I learn so much from both your channels!! High Fives! Thank You Both So Much!! 🙏🦋💐

I appreciate that Laura almost never comes across like she’s talking down to people. I get there’s a lot of new gardeners out there, but many garden/homesteading You Tubers think their mission is to teach and so they frequently do come across as very condescending, especially to those of us who have been gardening decades longer than they have. I don’t think these You Tubers intend to be condescending, but they have the mindset that they have been gardening 5, 10 years, perhaps a little longer, and are now experts and that their audience are all newbies who are ignorant so they present things that way. Which, for someone who’s in their 6th decade of gardening can be very off putting. I think, in addition to new gardeners, a larger percentage of the audience than they realize are people who are at least as experienced as they are, but maybe don’t have the physical ability to do as much as we used to do so are getting our gardening fix assuaged in part with videos . Anyway, I am glad Laura doesn’t come across this way. 😊

Okay, Laura, a couple of things. I WANT TO SEE THE WHITE BATHROOM. My old house has been "in-progress" for 15 years and I have those ugly spaces. I will feel better if I see yours. ;-) ALSO, your description of the hot water heater in the wall that makes knocking noises -- That story may have cleared up a past mystery for me. Many years ago, I was alone at work in an old building, and heard knocking like that, like someone rapping on a door. I was so startled and scared! I have always wondered what that was, and now at least I have a viable explanation, rather than ghosts. LOL! As for husband jumping in and interrupting ... mine does that all the time. He anticipates what I am going to say, and is usually wrong. Haha.

We 100 % live like that Aaron! We live in an old house that we inherited so we can NOT complain...BUT...The house WAS a Summer house/ holiday house used by various generations so...Let's say things that were done were 'fixes' at the time or considered 'cute or quirky' for those ancestors whose pockets were deep enough to be amused by it for 3 months out of the year. Here is what we have done over the past few years until we can afford Aesthetic reno (because now we do plumbing, roofing, water heater, new septic etc) Paint, SOME builder quality things etc. I repainted the ENTIRE kitchen (counters and all) in one shade I love, bought a new smaller fridge and new kitchen taps and handles/pulls. It looks SO MUCH better and was easily under 500 dollars. We covered old linoleum (not nice old fashioned kind but 70s vinyl) with inexpensive ahdesive flooring that LOOKS like wood in a bathroom. Not permanent, but I can't tell you how it lifted my spirits to the point that I taught myself how to install a new cute old fashioned sink to replace the hideous 70's version. It's funny what you will put up with when you think "OH when we do ALL of this Later" and then you just move on. For us, we Love the history and the view (we don't love the taxes we live in TAXachusetts lol) and we embrace the positive. I think many people LIVE with the bad and wait for the good. Very relatable, this.

I would LOVE some tubers, Laura!!! What if those of us who have ordered merchandise and are loyal fans 😉 pay for our shipping???? Would you give away to some of us?? I can't tell you how proud of those dahlias I would be!!! To have some "Laura" dahlias in my garden would be a dream. I know, silly! If you saw my yard, all since I started following you a few years back, you'd be amazed!! You are truly my inspiration!!

I love the pond and the picture Paul took on the misty day was amazing. Would you ever consider doing a calendar showing a monthly picture of the pond over a years time? I would buy one. And maybe in all the excitement when getting the fish someone miscounted and put 12 in the bags and no one noticed?

Laura, your white bathroom sounds so much like my story!!! We bought our house 22 years ago and it needed a lot of work. We did it slowly as we had funds and our bathroom kept getting pushed to the bottom of the list behind the rest of the house, educating our kids, holidays etc. When we moved in it was had grotty white tiles to about shoulder height with paint above that and ghastly stenciled star fish and dolphins - so gross! We gave it a lick of paint to refresh it a bit and there it sat for 18 years. It was the last room we did and by far my favourite now so hang in there. You'll do it one day and it will be worth the wait. Thanks for all your amazing videos which are such an important part of my day and motivation to keep working on my own garden. 🥰🌲🌹🌺🌻

You're not alone in waiting to renovate and living with what you have!! My husband and I bought a home during Covid knowing it's a fixer and excited to shore it up from soup to nuts. But...here we are, a few years later, still living it just as it is! Leaky windows, settling cracks, floors that were not installed correctly. No central A/C. I could go on. And yet we love it. No it's not the fanciest, most up to date home and we'll get around to making it our own. But like you guys, everything works (more or less) and it's actually nice and cozy around the fireplace this time of year. There's too much other stuff in our lives right now. We'll get to the house. I'm sure you will too! Love you guys.

I just love you two. I have been watching you and learning so much for years. However, just wanted to tell you my husband owns a plumbing heating and air company and he corrects everyone on “hot water heater”. He states it is not a HOT water heater, if the water was hot it wouldn’t need to be heated. It’s a water heater!!!😂😂😂😂 Also, I studied under your tutelage for several years. Last year we put in a 64’x8’ flower bed. It turned out great. We love it, all of the neighbors love it and we constantly receive comments on it. Hope to send you pics of the beginning and end of the project. It was a lot of work, but turned out so beautiful. We live on the coast of Virginia, Zone 8. Thank you for all of the tips and taking us along on your planting journeys.

Won’t cost a lot and I bet you’ll be amazed at how it changes how you feel about the room. Life is short 🥰

My mom always said, "Buy quality, not quantity." Of course, I am spoiled having a wood crafter as a husband who builds beautiful furniture from hardwoods. I know how much time it takes to make perfect joints and routed trim. I'm particular about finishes and notice when things aren't finished carefully. I help him match boards when he is building a set of doors, drawers, or making a table or chest top. You have a good eye for beauty and quality, Laura, and having an idea of what you want in a space; whether in the garden, your home, the Hartley, or an arrangement.

No Aaron! I like the way Laura does talk. She is to the point. I repeatedly watched where she stated numbers of Koi and Shark fish. She said it clearly if you pay attention to the phrase. Laura makes gardening simple. I don't know if I would have started planting anything if she didn't make it as such.

Rock n brick stains have improved so much. Even our local high school had kids and former students volunteer to stain the bricks to help them match the new brick addition and it has stood the test of time for five years now. I have seen people change the whole tone of their old brick homes by random splashes of a different color to improve the whole look. Amazing changes. Please video any attempts you make on the brick and the rock. It would be exciting to see.

Aaron, how did you guess! 😂 Me and my boyfriend bought an old house with old garden when we was 22 years old and we lived there while renovation was going on, and now 10 years later I have to say my house is almost finished. 🤣 All the money went in to the house and I had no money left for my garden. My boyfriend said I need to do it all on a small budget or no budget at all, we bought a little bit more land around us and that was all my garden budget, and I did the garden renovation and he did almost all the work him self on the house. It was hard work but worth every penny. I know you will have your house one day exactly how you want it, becouse I can see your garden space and it looks STUNNING, you are the BEST and you deserve the best!!! LOVE, LOVE YOUR VIDEOS!!!!

About the hot water heater banging: We have hard water also and on a regular basis we have to drain the hot water tank to remove sediment. The knocking is actually a build-up of sediment (in our case). Aaron might try this. I would Google the manufacture's name and see if it can be drained. Hope this helps.

Omg!!! We are living in that very scenario that Aaron talks about at the beginning of this video. We bought a 130 year old house at the beginning of the pandemic that needs a lot of renovation. By the time we were ready for renovations the cost for construction skyrocketed. We put it on hold until prices stabilized, and are concentrating on updates that we can do. Meanwhile we are living in rooms with holes in ceilings and such. We don’t want to spend the money to make temporary updates to just tear it all out when reno finally begins. I can’t wait to see your reno when you start that.

We've been in our house for 10 years and just started Reno, room by room, last year. I feel your pain! There's nothing "wrong" with our house, so you hate to really do anything and waste money until you're ready to REALLY do it. It was built in the mid 1990's and nothing has been touched since. It's also 4000 sq ft, so it's big rooms with extremely high ceilings that are just very difficult to really figure out what to do. Also, Laura, YES (NO!) on the vanity lights with the big round light bulbs. I hate them so much and have just learned to look past them. 🤣

I have lived with crappy parts of my house for so many years -waiting for the day to have it perfect. So wish I could go back and just DIY it. It would have looked a lot better than it did for over 20 years waiting for the professional renovation!! Haha. And I would have been so much happier with it. I’ve learned life is too short to wait for perfection or “just the right moment or time”. Also could you have someone frame the brick walls in all the way around that area and cover the brick -like they did in the old days. People do renovations and find really old brick behind the walls. Then you’d still have the character of the fireplaces in all 3 rooms. But you could have your wood wall/ mantle. Etc. Even if it’s not “perfect”, it would still make you smile! You two are my favorites!

Aaron, I agree with you regarding suckers at the base of trees. As a horticulturist for a city I found that the trees that suckered a lot were often times planted too deep and the roots were circulating the tree along with the suckering. I also noticed when the tree was mulched with chips “volcano” style they also suckered and the trees showed other stress as well. Given that, Laura was right in that many of the fruit trees do sucker naturally. I enjoy watching your videos, and learn many new things from you both.
