The 2 for the “peace sign” are actually different signs. The 1 on the right is a version of it, the 1 on the left is the “V for victory” sign. The V for Victory was from Japan &, when Japan became aware of the West’s peace sign, they though it was the same thing. They started doing it in pictures, trying to make peace signs (sometimes it was an actual peace sign, but usually not). Later, the US started copying Japan’s pictures in return, doing the V for victory without realising. They then started being used interchangeably, despite having very different meanings. The sign Mario makes at the end of levels is the V for Victory, for example (as to say, “ha, I win. I’m better”. Less commonly, it can mean “I was successful”.). The traditional peace sign has some level of tilt to it, but started being used fully vertically sometime later (I suspect as a result of starting to use the V for victory sign in its place).

I believe it goes like this: While fighting the British at the battle of agincourt during the 100 year war, whenever the French used to capture British long bow archers, they used to cut off their index and middle finger as a means to stop them from ever firing an arrow at them again. Since then, the British used to taunt them with the "inverted victory" sign, as a means of saying "pluck yew" You pluck a bow, and in this instance the longbows of the 100 year war were supposedly made from the wood of a yew tree. It originated in like medieval times or something when people would cut the two fingers of captured archers so they couldn’t shoot a bow any more. So then the archers would show them two fingers as an insult, teasing them as if to say, “haha I can shoot you, look at my fingers”
