How Do YOU Define Yourself Lizzie Velasquez at TEDxAustinWomen

n a time when beauty is defined by supermodels, success is defined by wealth, and fame is deified by how many followers you have on social media, Lizzie Velasquez asks the question how do you define yourself? Once labeled, "The Worlds Ugliest Woman," Lizzie decided to turn things around and create her own definitions of what she defines as beauty and happiness.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in local community. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.*

I'm 37. I've always considered myself cynical and cold-hearted. I laughed when I watched Titanic. I think animals are generally better then humans. Well, I cried when I watched this video. I imagined how hard it was for you, and I can't even begin to imagine how much inner strength it takes to do what you do. Lizzie, you are the strongest and the most beautiful person I've ever seen. Thank you.

I believe that everybody in this world is different for a reason. And everybody in this world looks different for a reason. You will see some people in this world that has big lips, big nose, big ears, really big head, some people have speech problems, really bad stuttering problems. there are some people in this world that are called beautiful, and there are some people in this world that are called ugly. Everybody in this world doesnt look the same, and everybody in this world doesnt act the same. and that's why some people get laughed at and picked on because they are different, or they look different. But to me being laughed at, picked on, and made fun of by other people just makes them different, and the things that people laugh at, and make fun of you about id the things that make you different. I know that being picked on, and laughed at, and made fun of by other people because you look different than them is bad but I would say that you need people picking on you, making fun of you and laughing at you because that is what makes you different. But I think what makes you unique, and special is your character traitd and personality, and the things that you are really good at, the things that you excel at. Everybody in this world has different things about them that makes them unique and special. For me I just couldnt imagine being in this world where nobody have never being picked on, laughed at, and made fun of because this worldnt feel the same to me. Because we need that in the world. Of course theres the good and bad that comes with being picked on, made fun of, and laughed at. And I will explain it. The bad part about it is that when you get picked on you get your feelings hurt and you become mad because you dont like that they are picking on you and making fun of you. And the good part about it is that being picked on, laughed at, and made fun of can make you and turn you into a stronger and better person. and you can also use the negative things that people say about you and let it turn you into a stronger and better person. Because you know like the saying go what dont kill you can only make you stronger. Being picked on, made fun of, and laughed at will just help you to realize and understand that you are different, and thats what makes you different from other people. And no I dont think anybody in this world looks horrible, and I wouldnt call anybody ugly because that is mean and hurtful to say to somebody. And I want to say this when you are young and you get picked on and made fun of by people because yoy look different, you deal with that but when you get older you remember that and then you realize that you were dealing with that, and it just turned into a better person. And also I look at it like this being picked on, and made fun of by people will only last for a little while and then it will stop. And oh, and I wanted to say that I love you lizzie velasquez, because you are a very strong and beautiful person, and also you are an inspiration to me in a lot of other people. And I really enjoyed watching this video.

I would really like to put this into perspective. She has been called ugly and asked to kill herself; for no reason other than her physical appearance. And yet she is so warm-hearted, kind and loving towards others and herself. I would say that in a world where there is war, famine, genocide, poverty, global warming, greed, animal abuse, bullying, cancer, rape, murder, torture, cyber-bullying, ISIS, racism, sexism, antisemitism, speciesism, homophobia; in a world with so many problems I would really call her beautiful. Almost too beautiful for this world! Much love Lizzie! Never stop being awesome!

I hate how everyone thinks beauty is about how good you look. If people knew what true beauty is, everyone would be saying that Lizzie is the most beautiful woman in the world. She can't see perfectly, and yet, she can see what many others don't. Most people have 20/20 vision, but they can't see anything through the lies in front of them-the lies that keep them from understanding the truth about beauty.

xiao jie Chen "Common sense consists of those layers of prejudice laid down in the mind before the age of eighteen." --*Albert Einstein* Yes; the media has brainwashed people ever since their childhood. The media, which believes in physical attractiveness as the true form beauty, injects their beliefs into others, hoping that their own sexist and worldly portrayals of people become "common sense." But, as Albert Einstein here says, it is not "common sense" they have been injecting into us since childhood, but rather prejudice.

Lizzie Velasquez you are an amazing person. Your positive attitude is intoxicating and something I needed to see and hear today. I deal with trolling, death threats & suicide threats pretty regularly with my KZread career. I'm on the opposite end of the spectrum where I get ridiculed for being overweight. It's very easy for people to be complete monsters when they are hiding behind a keyboard and don't actually have to face the person they are attacking or see first hand the damage they cause. I've been feeling very depressed lately and watching your video has seriously kicked my butt into gear. I think you are an amazing motivational speaker and I will share this video with my audience. And for the record I would like to say you are an amazingly beautiful person inside and out. Anyone that would think you are ugly have been brainwashed by society and don't judge beauty for themselves but rather from what they think others will think. I personally judge beauty based on what I see in front of me, hear in front of me and feel in front of me and you hit me in the feels with this video so to me you are a gorgeous person. But you already know that! Keep doing what you do Lizzie and thank you for uplifting so many peoples spirits with this amazing talk. I've subscribed to your channel and will watch your future videos. You have a lot that you can teach people and I know that you have already changed the world for the better. Special thanks to my subscribers Fluctibus Fludd for tweeting me a link to this video, it's subscribers like him that really make being a public speaker and KZread content creator worth while. Have a great day/evening Lizzie and know you just picked up another fan for life.

And to think that people feel bad when they get made fun of for silly things like wearing clothes out of style, or not being as popular as somebody else. Hearing her talk about her life and what defines her gives me so much confidence to ignore the (relatively small) list of physical downsides I have in my own life and really just dive in deeper on what I do love in life. ITs something that I think people nowadays should really focus on mastering rather than dolling themselves up to look like the models (both men and women). You are so awesome - these are the kindof TEDx things that I think about for years after the fact. Godspeed Lizzie

Lizzie is pretty darn awesome. She is inspiring and has a really nice personality, but just objectivly she is not pretty or beautiful. "syn: beautiful, handsome, lovely, pretty refer to a pleasing appearance" Beauty has very much to do with looks.

Wow... that speech was so perfectly put together and brought me to tears. It's horrible that anyone could be cold hearted enough to do or say those things to this amazing girl. She's just as human as any one of us. Just imagine if you had to go through the agonizing anticipation that she had to every day before she walked out the door, solely because of the fear of how other people would treat her. And despite everything, she still has enough courage and love left for those people, that she can stand up in front of an audience and give a speech about her deepest insecurities. And not even for her own benefit, but to help other people and change their lives. She is so incredibly strong and brave, more so than most of us would be in her shoes. Her personality shocked me and blew me away, and because of her soul and who she is, to me she is the most beautiful woman in the world.

She is nice, funny, and inspirational. everyone that called her ugly are ugly themselves because they are so heartless that they can say something like that. Lizzie is an human being, she also have feelings. I have given up on this world

kyke lingay Your understanding of beauty is very superficial. I would consider you an ugly person because you obviously suck as a person but don't worry. I'm sure you're very good looking.

In a world where the term "bullying" has become the latest catch-all, your talk brings it back into perspective. What you endured was undeniable bullying, yet you made the difficult choice to move forward and focus on your goals. I am going to share this with my own high school students in hopes that they will be inspired by your message. Thank you for your bravery. Thank you for sharing your story with the world.

When I was a kid, there were people who looked "abnormal" and I was the bully. I wish I can meet these people again to have lunch together & talk about what an asshole I was.

Lizzie is the MOST influential, inspirational person I know. I'm currently reading her book "Dare To Be Kind", and it has absolutely changed my life. She's the most beautiful, amazing, sweet person I know, and I love every inch of her and what she does.

Naomi Madder I'm not being negative, but I don't think two kids that young could understand this.
