You have to bear in mind the nature of what a Grimm is, according to the shows lore the very First Grimm from whom all others are descended was born to regular human parents and from then on all children of Grimms were also Grimms. So maybe the First Grimm could be explained by some random fluctuation or mutation which allowed an otherwise normal human to be able to see Wesen in their natural forms. There is also the fact that they have enhanced strength, stamina, resistance to magic and mind control (though of course not perfect), reflexes and a natural affinity for combat. But to top it off it has an added effect of their eyes mysteriously appearing "Black" and reflective of their "True Wesen Nature" and in the scene with Truble the image is NOT the same as the person doing the actual seeing, its far more bestial and feral looking. Their very blood is poison to the Hexenbeists, which are there ultimate Anti-thesis in the Wesen World. Does this sound like the standard "Random Mutation"? Considering all these facts that are revealed about Nick as the show went on, its more and more evident that the First Grimm was not "random" at all and instead was basically a Guinea Pig for some sort of magical "tinkering" to empower a human who could fight back against what people of that ancient time (MILLENIA ago, after all) saw as "Monsters" or "Evil". Grimms were clearly intended to be used for this role by whomever actually made them and the fact that the heritage can be passed by their blood to their children indicates the intent. Now as to why there was only the First Grimm and its from them all others descended maybe they could only do this once but decided that One would be enough so long as the strength of the blood bore out that any children would be Grimms, too.

@@stugod5000 yep, he puts the sword away by touching the pen cap to the tip of the blade, but if he touches the cap to the base of the hilt it turns into a pen with the cap on the bottom. and it wasn't even him who realized it, it was Annabeth

What's interesting is that NICK was the first GRIMM (possibly in history) to actually befriend Wesen and got someone to actually TELL HIM how they knew. I'm sure other Grimms had no idea unless a wesen tells them, and why would they even talk to a "De Capitare' LOL.

​​@@Frankie2012channel Aunt Marie was Engaged to steinhalder Farley Kolt. She specified that Grimms hunt "the Bad ones", implying some Wesen are Ok. Aside from her, you're probably right. I'm surprised that none of Nick's ancestors bothered torturing Wesen for that information. They definitely tortured them for other stuff. Even if there Had been other Grimms on civil speaking terms with Wesen, they certainly never bothered to ask or Write Down how wesen made them out to be Grimms. Not so much as a useful tip like: "TRY NOT TO LET WESEN SEE YOUR EYES OR CATCH YOU STARING WHEN THEY WOGE, UNLESS YOU'RE READY TO ATTACK" Even when Sunglasses weren't available, knowing how Wesen can tell Grimms apart from humans through their eyes would have been good to know. A lifesaver even.

Trubel's reaction to this information was a lot better than Nick's. Trubel: How do you know I'm a Grimm? Monroe: Um... It's your eyes. Rosalee: They get really dark when we woge. It's kind of scary. Trubel: Really? Monroe: Yeah, we're not talking kiddy pool dark. We're talking, like, all the way down to your soul, deep-type dark. Trubel: Cool.

in a an episode or two he said that wesen somehow knew when they were looking at him when they woged that he was a grimm. so in one instance with hank he had hank enrage the suspected wendigo to get him to do the first stage woge to verify that the guy was a wendingo. since the wendigo wasn't looking at nick he didn't know he was a grimm until later when he was face to face with Nick while fully woged

As someone currently living in Oregon, it's probably to hide stoner eye. Usually pretty frowned on, on a cop.

I am just getting into this series and I have to say, I love the idea of the main character being an unknowingly terrifying force of destruction to the wesen. Imagine staring into those dead-eyes only for the one who possesses them to be completely oblivious.

"You see anything?" "Well yeah." "Not you!" :P

Rosalee's "Woo!" at the end was adorable.

I loved this scene, such a quick fix scene to explain a long outstanding question in the show that was previously unanswered.

You know the fact that there eyes change that they adapt to suff like nick getting enhanced hearing hearing after the one wesen made him go blind and the enhanced speed and strength from the voodoo one makes me wonder if grims are a “human like” wesen

I always wonder that too. Like some wesen are not from animals, but fire (excandesco), inspiration (musaï), of even "alien" (Glühenvolk)... The hexenbiest are considered specials and sometime not wesen, so the grimm might be something like that too... something elemental like darkness or the abyss...

Nick comes to Monroe's house with the serious face. First response from Monroe with an exasperated look, "who's dead?". Me: best friends forever.

I have a theory that Grimm are a type of wesen variant that doesn’t have a noticeable woge, other than what was mentioned here. It would explain how their bodies are geared towards combat and quickly adapt to changing circumstances.

My memory of this show is really rusty. Did they ever explain what the Royal Families were either? I can't remember if they were supposed to be somehow different too, and I don't think it was ever clarified.

I love this scene. *Sigh - unfortunately for me, I am new to the Grimm world. I found the series after it already ended. But bonus... I got to collect the entire series and watch whole seasons at a time.

full woge their bodies actually chang rather then just an image appearing of their true self, so yes their voice may very well change depending upon the species. wendigos get a high pitched voice

Just getting in to Grimm for the past couple of months and I love this series.

The world needs more nice people like Monroe and Rosalie.

Wesen creatures weren’t the only trying to survive a witch-hunt- it looked like certain Grimm family branches too went under hiding what with their abilities too gave them the essence of admiration and fear. Ignorance is bliss but soon the powers would manifest itself making their abilities harder to control and hone it down. Along time ago it was okay but then I feel sad that they had to hide both Wesen and Grimms and other supernaturals just to fit in the human society - although now it’s because fight or flight of the unknown will cause a series of suspicion and mass genocide.

You know I'm kinda curious if contacts would have an effect on this or if it's like a whole eye rather than just iris and pupil that change. If it was then he could wear some colored contacts daily and be able to see wesen change without them seeing him and that'd probably be very useful.

They do not state what portion of his eyes turn black and I was wondering if it was only his iris that changed then if colored contacts would hide the change. As opposed to the whites of his eyes changing to black as well which contacts wouldn't hide. I haven't watched the show in ages so I don't remember anything past about season 1.5 so however the wedding turned out I don't know🤷‍♀️

No, unfortunately. In one of the final seasons we see it covers their entire eyes, not just the pupils, which is all the contact would cover. It's how the FBI agent ID's Trubel as a Grimm when she was hospitalized.

I had always wished there had been a Grimm antagonist. A Grimm who followed the ways of old and worked towards eradicating all Wesen . They would have been an intimidating foe.

OK, it’s clearly dark outside and, for however many seasons, we have never seen Nick wear shades. But suddenly we’re asked to believe he has some in his pocket. Really? I can accept the many, many wessen variations, Juliette confronting an abyss in Nick’s living room floor, the vast array of extremely specific potions concocted in Rosalie’s shop and the wild fx of said potions, the convoluted Grimm/Wessen/Royal intrigues.Sure, I’m willing to go to all those theres. But the sudden appearance of the sunglasses? Come.on.

I don't know. I keep sunglasses in my bag. I wear them from time to time but a lot of times it's just sitting in my bag. Then when I wear them people will ask if they are new. Though, three years are a bit much. Then again, these are just snippets of their lives.

before this I always wondered if Nick looked like a monster to the wesens. I wonder if Renard only sees Nick as a grim in one eye since only half of his face changes.

I'm currently in the beginning of S2 and my curiosity got the best of me. I'm so disappointed in myself for looking this up, I didn't think the show was going to answer that question!! 😭😭😅

Always knew it was something with his eyes just never knew what his eyes did to provoke the reaction.

I actually called it before they revealed it. I can't remember how long I had been in the show, but I figured out it was his eyes, because they only would freak out whenever they make eye contact.

It was getting harder for the writers to come up with original ideas and most of the show participants' contracts had expired and they were mostly renewing a season at a time. Since the show was never a major market hit (although it had a strong fan base) the decision was made to end the series, and cut back the final season from 22 episodes to 13. (One interview said the writers were sort of relieved, as it was getting tougher to write.)

@@c.r.kubicek3512 I can't help but be annoyed at how right you are and how hard it must have been for the writers to come up with new creative ideas each season but I can't help but feel that despite the hurdles they had to get by..they should have given us a better and maybe longer ending and there were many creatures outside of the U.S and Europe that they could have explored.

The producers and actors made the right choice for all the obvious reasons. Most shows have a natural life span It is also difficult to keep coming up with original story lines without breaking the already slender threads of credulity that already exist to allow the show to exist It had a good 6 seasons The most we should expect is either a film length episode or a miniseries every few years to explore something that hadn't already been addressed in the show already.

It eas already shown to us in an episode where Trubel goes to the hospital, and one of the nurses was a wesen and then woged in front of Trubel. The wesen could see Trubel's eyes completely black. Fucking amazing
