While filming another video, I learned about a fascinating technique used to estimate our carbon emissions, and is used by governments around the world to validate their emission figures, and specifically their emission reductions. Many thanks to Dr Clement Albergel at the European Space Agency’s climate office for helping with this video!

How do we know what our carbon emissions are? Where does carbon emission data come from? In this video I talk to the European Space Agency’s climate office about how they use satellites to monitor carbon emissions from space, and how satellites can improve how we estimate carbon emissions on the ground.

"She was a classy dame, with a pair of gaseous columns stretching all the way up to the sky. Just looking at those billowing clouds of hers, I felt as if I might be launched into orbit myself."
Dr. Simon. I don't know what to say. I am an old man who lives in Chicago and you have changed my life. I first watched your video about the lost decade and your comments about John Sununu. As a finance professional this made me realise that inappropriately high discount rates create a large bias against just about any investments that replace fuel with capital. I continued to watch your videos and when I started to watch your video "The Century We Saved the Earth" I first though this may be a bit tacky. Of course it was incrediblly good. I have watched other videos from people like this man named Nate Hagens from Wisconsin who seems to dislike solar power and thinks that shale gas is a revolution. None of the other people come anywhere close to your videos in terms of content, production, subject matter or general attitudes about policy. Your comments about your father were also so touching. I have made about 1,000 videos about really boring finance and financial modelling. Because of you, I now dedicate some of the videos (with maybe 300 views) to friends who died and with whom I had many discussions about energy. Because of you, I go crazy when I hear old people like me take business class seats (using more carbon than economy) to fly and then take a cruise were they have dinner with other Americans or when I go to California and see all of the Teslas followed by a bus that has one person (the bus driver) or I when people discuss "tear down" houses where so much wood and concrete is used to make a big house that uses so much more energy. Whatever you decide to do you will do it very well. Your creativity combined with your knowledge provides so much value. I now for the first time will have to go to patreon and see how it works.

I just watched your 'I Don't Think I Can Do This Anymore' video, Simon. I checked and found that despite being subscribed to you for at least a year, you had released two videos I hadn't noticed in recent weeks. So here I am, watching and enjoying.

Yep, politicians in the West just piss off the farmers and working class. While other parts of the world are focused on keeping status quo and quietly industrializing the remaining non-anthropogenic ecosystems. Hopefully, we're enlightened by our stupidity and mistakes that we'll agree on solutions to mitigate climate disasters in the future.
Then she walked in, the european space agency. Absolute gold
I watched your “I don’t think I can do this anymore” video and decided to explore your videos more. This video is way more interesting than the title or thumbnail… I hope some data and analysis will help you survive on KZread as the content is gold ❤
Random observation as someone who has followed the channel since the Oxford days... it is impactful to see Simon's hair turning gray. If he took his dad's hair genes, he's so going to rock it.
Being aware how the numbers are generated and verified is really useful. Since I have started arguing more extensively with deniers, I have watched more of the videos on this Chanel and I have been amazed by the shear quantity of data sources we have. I have also become quite scared as I have realised the amount of restraint there has been in the scientific community in the way trends, projections and likely consequences of climate change are communicated to the public. When deniers complain about alarmist talk, they are operating in total ignorance. The worrying thing is that bad people are filling the gap with pseudo science claptrap. Thats why the effort put into videos like this is so valued by people like me. Thank you. Actually, a really big thank you.
I hope by 'value for money', you mean the detective will become a core tenet of the channel! (Great video too, it was really interesting to have an insight into this part of climate science and GHG reporting)

My environmental engineering professor had a Chicago accent, but was always somewhere around the world giving professional advice to China and 3rd world countries about how to handle specific types of waste. First day of the semester, this guy was 4 hours out returning from a trip to Peru. I want you to imagine, if you can, a very strong Chicago accent speaking Spanish because I was not ready for it.
A website with an interactive world map of those hindcast emissions would possibly be the coolest* thing ever. *Or should that be 'hottest' given it's about climate change? 🤓

To some degree the nullschool map could apply, it's feed data from forecasting services but also would need to fill in plenty of blanks with predictive data. And ofc you can just set the date to earlier time. Just google 'nullschool', if you haven't seen it already.
The intro is just brilliant ❤️
This is the best video intro I’ve seen in the last 12 months, well done Simon! 🎉
Thank you for opening my eyes on a subject i would never have the energy to go explore myself. I'm happy i found your channel
I'm curious about the simon's interpretation of the carbon major's report since you talked about the sources here. Is it really just the top 100 companies responsible for the majority of emmissions? Does this make the idea of countries being the focus a little more obsolete with these international companies? Maybe he's already done a video on it since it's rather old news now.
Excellent video. Well explained. I really appreciate how well you educate and inform, and the time you put into this. Thank you. BTW, keep the hat, it looks great!
That's bloody brilliant! Now, what are our heat emissions?
I did not know I wanted to watch this, but I have and it is a fine video. I saw it show up on my timeline and it almost didn't register, though I really do like you and your videos. I will be here for the pivot. I hope it works out well. Good luck!

This is a downright great piece of content. Crème de la Crème of all of KZread. Great job Simon and Team.
Oh man, what an intro! I absolutly loved it!
Great video as always Simon. Inspired use of the film noir / private investigator pastiche! Drama's loss is sciences gain! You're probably too young to have seen James Burke's 'The real Thing' BBC series. The first episode in particular uses a similiar style...(and I loved all things James Burke so it is a compliment). 😊 On the actual video content - a very clear analysis of how the several data sets match-up. Liked your little note on the current UK govt backtracking. As always your videos are always entertaining, interesting, educational and stylish. Glad you are still putting videos up after your mini-break last year. Best wishes Michael

Simon, could you examine solar forcing of CO-2? and how this affects air temperature at all levels in the atmosphere? Does solar forcing and the response of CO-2, that also releases equivalent energy into space, actually cause a net cooling of the Ocean surface, and land surface? How does this work?
Brilliant video, luv the Film Noir b/w skit! Yur graphics are top notch🎉

Have you ever heard about spectroscopy? Adding a light source (often called as white light) in background and gas in front and then measuring the difference... And making same from the space... We can see each element that we want, because they all have their specific absorption wavelenghts... You can just make a darkened room with a pinpoint of light. Then add a prism in it. This spreads the light (often sunlight) and gives these rainbow colors. When you look more closely you will see these dark lines in it. Those lines are absorbtion lines of specific molecules like methane. This knowledge is few centuries old... And we can see distant stars spectrum or even what is in the atmosphere in some exoplanets. It is far easier to see down to nearby Earth...
Yes!
I know that Indonesia emits a lot of CO2 but TIL that we're not emitting that much per capita even though our entire grid is pretty much coal and fossil fuel. I wonder if that's due to our (dwindling but still sizable) rainforest.
Here! Have some engagement :)
“I accepted to come to this meeting to have a sober and mature conversation. I’m not in any way signing up to any discussion that is alarmist. There is no science out there, or no scenario out there, that says that the phase-out of fossil fuel is what’s going to achieve 1.5C.” - Sultan Al Jaber, President of COP 28, also CEO of Abu Dhabi National Oil Company Mukhtar Babayev will be the president for COP 29; he is also a former executive of the State Oil Company of Azerbaijian Republic. Seems more and more likely, scenario SSP5-8.5 of the IPCC assessment may come to fruition (or at least the higher end of the spectrum). I say enjoy what you can, while you still can; pity the generations to come.

And Al Jaber was correct. Parse his words very carefully (remember, English is not his native tongue): "... IS WHAT’S GOING TO ACHIEVE *1.5C* ." He's saying limiting warming to 1.5C is impossible. He is correct, because we're already there (especially with baked-in temp rises for the next few decades.).
@davidjennings2179

@@TheDanEdwardsBut choosing 1.5 is arbitrary then - phasing out fossil fuels is going to limit warming. It may be that nothing will get us to 1.5, reducing burning fossil fuels will only help though

God I fucking love environmental science satellites! So cool!
Omg the intro
Having some exposure to this topic professionally, remote sensing has a lot of promise but isn't quite as precise a tool as you describe here. I've seen two estimates for the same area from two different models with wildly different numbers. It's especially an issue for individual programs/land areas, but if you can't drill down and see what approaches work, what is the point of measuring in the first place? There has been enormous progress in carbon measurement in recent years, but it remains one of the biggest hurdles to practical policy development that I've seen, especially when you move beyond forest conservation. The methods proposed by Verra and Gold Standard (not exclusively remote sensing) have significant issues with cost and scalability.
That hat was worth the investment. Need more! 😛
oh my god that intro was hilarious
"A witness that you can't rough up, or pour a drink, or threaten to throw off a building." Wait, have we tried doing that to the fossil fuel producers?
If only we committed to utilizing modern nuclear energy options... It would genuinely help improve our situation SO MUCH. It's the biggest mistake we moved away from this due to emotions and fear not facts and logic
Simon, why are you like this?
personally used a copernicus dataset
Mad hat skills..

I’ll tell you a number. Britain’s record high carbon emissions came in the early 1970’s - since then Britain commenced writing carbon emission regulation into law , in essentially a falling carbon environment, at ruinous expense.

I watch your videos on Nebula instead of KZread. When you say less people are watching your videos lately, it's maybe just a platform thing? Do you have the number of people watching your videos on Nebula? I watch all your recent videos on Nebula instead of KZread. I'm probably not the only one. I watch Joe Scott on Nebula. very nice video, but I think you vastly overestimate the value of trustworthiness. Apart from that, we don't have satellites that measure and confirm trustworthiness in a column of air over a given country anyway.

Energy in minus energy our is equal to change in internal energy plus work for a non-izolated thermodynamic system. Nothing else needs to be said if you deal with actual scientists.
