SIX WAYS TO RECEIVE WARNINGS
1. NOAA Weather Radio with Specific Area Message Encoding (S.A.M.E.) to sound for your precise county
2. Wireless Emergency Alerts on your mobile phone (NWS tornado and destructive severe thunderstorm trigger your phone if you are in the warning area. Tornado, 80mph+ winds and hail larger than baseballs)
3. Internet and apps (MSC on Facebook, Red Cross Emergency App)
4. Local news and radio
5. Friends and family (look out for eachother and share weather updates by call, message or text)
6. Outdoor warning sirens (keyword: OUTDOOR)
When you have your six ways to receive warnings you'll never miss a warning. Sometimes we get surprise severe severe weather so please don't be caught off guard!

A lot of people don't know the difference between a tornado siren and a fire/accident siren. I was in a yoga class this morning and the fire siren went off a half-hour before the normal noon siren. Several people looked around and asked, is there a tornado? I said, no, the tornado siren is a steady tone, if it goes up and down like this one, it's nothing to worry about (unless it is your house on fire). In fact, I had the fire siren blown for me back in February when another driver T-boned me at an intersection. I wasn't hurt but my car was totalled. They thought they were going to have to get the jaws of life because my door wouldn't open. So it was pretty exciting because all my friends at the senior center heard the siren go off but they didn't know it was me until afterwards!

I live in Lansing and last year we had a destructive thunderstorm with 90 MHP winds and hail. When I heard the sirens I thought it was a tornado warning and when I looked at the Weather app there wasn't any, just a severe thunderstorm warning. I thought sirens were just for tornado warnings. However, later I learned that the City of Lansing sounds the sirens if a thunderstorm has winds of 80 MPH or more.
