How do Tefillin open? What does the inside of Tefillin batim look like?

/ @thesofercenter
Do not try this on your own, you can easily break the boxes, straps or cut into the Parshios in the inside if they are low down.
Many years of experience is needed in order to understand and know how much pressure to push and in which places to do it right without breaking or damaging them.

This video is good in that it shows inside the tefillin and can prevent someone from opening their tefillin out of curiosity. I see now how that would be a big mistake. Thank you.

Thank you for showing this; I just recently started looking into what these are and how they're made, and have already learned so much thanks to videos like these! (I'm a gentile- I think that's the right term?- so I didn't even know they were sewn shut and meant to stay sealed.) I'm not sure if this is explained in a previous video, but what is it meant to be sewn up with? It looks kind of like really old book binding thread to me, but I saw the question about resewing it and realize that can't be right. Also, is there any kind of cleansing that needs to be done before it's resealed? Many thanks for opening this up for the internet to learn, both figuratively and literally!

@@TheSoferCenter I'm glad you think so, I did end up looking through your previous videos after posting this comment and realized I couldn't really find any answer on what material is used outside of the leather. Thank you again for sharing, I'll make sure I have notifications on so I catch that video!

There are a lot of laws that you need to be proficient in order to sew them back up which are the beyond the scope of a video. I don't think I will be making a video on that because we need to make sure that it's being done properly.

For batim I recommend the Tefillin marker. www.thesofercenter.com/store/p4/Tefillin_Marker.html But that is for small touch up. If it needs a lot of repairs you will have to send to a Sofer to fix.

To inspect the letters to make sure they haven't cracked or faded with aging. I have seen Tefillin 70 years old going strong and others in bad shape after only 40 years. It all depends on how they are taken care of.
