Good video. I enjoy watching both the European leagues and the NWSL. It’s great to have football all year long. As I live in Scotland, I have access to the FA Player (Football Association) which shows most games in the WSL for free. Then there is the BBC which usually shows one game per weekend. Sky Sports have just entered the fray this season but their subscription is expensive so I can’t watch those games live. I try to avoid seeing any scores on line as the FA Player will show those games a day later. I should mention that FAP also shows Continental Cup and FA Cup matches exclusively and second division Barclays Womens Championship games. If anyone doesn’t have a VPN, get one. Not only will you be able to watch the FAP but DAZN ES (Spain) shows all La Liga F matches free of charge. Some Scottish games are available on BBC Scotland, BBC Alba ( Gaelic language channel), and STV shows England and Scottish internationals.

I love the WSL but it’s not ass competitive as the NWSL in my opinion. Usualy you have an idea of the top five WSL team within the first month but until playoff you have no clue in the NWSL

So far the WSL around half season and the top 4 teams are within 5 points diference, but between the 4th and the 5th there is already a 5 points gap, in 2022 the NWSL finished with the top 5 teams withing 5 points and between the 5th and 6th there were only 3 points difference. And the WSL is the most competitive league in Europe, the rest unfortunatelly are really bad how 1 team of with luck 2 teams completely dominate them. The only thing for certain in the NWSL was that Orlando Pride were going to underperform (hopefully they got that fixed for the next seasson) the same with Sky Blue/Gotham, when they finally were starting too look competitive idiotic trade decisions ruined their path.

It's not only money that matters on European leagues, the big difference is that younger players don’t go to college most of the clubs have their own academy for younger players, this is why a draft is totally irrelevant. The big advantage of the academy is that the clubs don’t have to pay a transfer fee and also when the players start in professional they have a lower salary, this explain also why it's very curent in Europe for young players to start at high level very early like 15 or 16.

Great video. The USWNT was my gateway into football in general so I’ve watched a lot of NWSL but only a bit of European women’s competition. It’ll be interesting to see if the women’s game ends up paralleling the men’s, with enough money invested to bring all the top talent to Europe, or if the strong tradition of women’s soccer in the US brings us to a different balance.

With the exception of few teams, the NWSL average salaries based on an article by DW from Germany are better than the salaries paid in Europe even Bayern Munchen the 2nd strongest team in German Frauen Bundesliga salaries are not that great, so it's not the around 12 teams in each European contry women's league pays better, I may say is still the complete opposite, Olympique Lyon, Barcelona, Chelsea may be paying slightly better salaries but I don't think the difference is that big, and the NWSL has been raising the Salary Cap each year, plus the introduction of the Allocation money allow the clubs to "excede" the cap when it's time to pay their bigger starts or tempt foreing players to join.

@@omargj1 That's a totally correct assessment of the current situation, but it feels like the women's game is at a tipping point in terms of interest and funding. If you multiply women's football investment 10x globally, how would that change the equation? It seems unlikely that the balance will remain the same, because in the NWSL that 10x would be spread across the whole league (not perfectly, of course) while in Europe it would go disproportionately to the most powerful teams. It sure seems like women's football ends up in a similar state as the men's game, but we're starting at a very different spot so it's possible things will turn out differently.

@@nathangray755 Unfortunatelly as things are right now I don't see that increased investment in Europe (Continental) may change how things are heading, and unfortunatelly leagues completely dominated by 1 or 2 teams may not be the best to bring more fans, yes Barcelona sold out the Camp Nou a few times for UWCL matches, but regularly they play in a stadium with capacity for 5000 and fail to fill it, Olympique Lyon regularly plays their home matches in a stadium for 1524 and they are arguably the best team in Europe, watching the same team trashing every other team in the league becomes boring pretty fast, meanwhile Arsenal women are playing quite a lot of matches at the Emirates and bringing crowds of around 40K, the main difference the Spanish and French leagues are completelly dominated by 1 team, the WSL while to some degree Chelsea may be dominating it, it's not at the same level and there are more teams with chances.

@@omargj1 Yes you are correct, the WSL is the most competitive women's league in Europe just like the premier league is the most competitive men's league, in so far as both leagues have multiple title contenders. The men's premier league has as many as 6 teams with a realistic chance of winning the league title (Tottenham and now Newcastle have to be included). And this season, the WSL is more competitive than it has ever been with up to 4 teams (Man Utd now included) having enough depth and quality in their squads to stand a realistic chance of taking the title. And yes, the NWSL is the most competitive professional league in all of women's football just as the MLS is the most competitive men's league (for the reasons explained in this video). I also think that American women's college football is the most competitive of all, even more than the NWSL, because there are so many well-funded College programs right across America. NCAA college soccer is funded as well as the best professional women's soccer programs. I don't imagine that Sophia smith or Emily Fox saw a marked improvement in the funding and facilities at Portland and Racing Louisville than they would have experienced at Stanford and UNC. North Carolina University has an endowment (i.e. money in the bank) of 5 Billion (yes billion) and Stanford's bank balance is closer two 30 Billion. There is no professional men's football club in the world (not Utd or Real Madrid) that has anything like that kind of liquidity much less real estate etc.

I can only say this. Watching Manchester City games when Sam Mewis was there I almost fell asleep. NWSL maybe less technical is some way but that also may be because there is so much pressing and the pace is 100 mph. There are teams like the Courage who are trying to play a “European” style but transitional play is hard to defend. As far as league play I find the NWSL far more entertaining. Also just seeing players like Mal Swanson (😢) and Trinity Rodman take over matches is a sight to see

In terms of global coverage and fans Europe is definitely taking over (Time being a huge factor). I prefer European football especially Spanish football because of the technicality and possession style play, I also follow the WSL and sometimes NWSL (which is mostly around 2am here, so it’s kinda difficult)

Europe seems to be taking over I agree. Women's soccer is growing more and more and Europe is simply a soccer continent while North American really isn't. I watch European league matches all over youtube, while NWSL could be in the middle of the playoffs and you can't even watch anywhere.

@@omargj1 The Italians call it football (Calcio is an alternative name). The English call it football (soccer is an alternative name). The whole world calls it football, it is the most common name used that's why it is football. Only USA, Canada, and Australia call it soccer simply so as not to confuse it with their local football invention that nobody else plays, that has nothing to do with playing the ball with your feet, but they still insist on calling football regardless... It's just a name... lol.

European leagues (men's and women's) are a joke compared to the NWSL. 2 maybe 3 teams can win the title (the WSL maybe 4 teams) that's why the Barcelona managers (and many other Spanish coaches) can't wait to go to the United States and coach NWSL teams, because they yarn for the challenge of a real football competition. Olympic Leon's Manager wanting to become Chelsea's manager because in the WSL Chelsea at least faces some stiff competition speaks volumes. The NWSL is so refreshing when positioned against the rest of the football landscape, a stark reminder of what football parity looks like. The NWSL lost some of its shine (and a lot of players) to Europe after COVID-19, but the unique and competitive nature of the league will eventually turn things full circle. As usual, it's anybody's guess who's going to win the title five games into the season. I am willing to bet that it won't be last season's winners Gotham FC.
