How Do I Split DMX for my Lights?

DMX doesn't like Y-Cables. So how do you split your DMX when you need to go in multiple directions?

I’m using D-pro 2 universe with 2 art-net enntec thru one net gear night hawk. Pretty easy. I also have a 120v 4 input box to come to one location instead of going around the world with cable. My front washes, spots(artfox roses), and smaller movers are one universe. Then I use the second universe for the rest of the stage. The powered input box sure does solve the problem with pushing the signal on down the line.

I’m using a dmx micro king directly from my computer into the light fixture. It’s all a wired connection. However, we want to set up lights across the sanctuary that are also controlled through the computer. Is this when I use a splitter or can I mix a wireless transmitter with our wired connection to continue the daisy chain?

You can mix wired and wireless. Many wireless transmitters offer a DMX output just like a light with a DMX input and output so it just gets wired in like any other light and essentially "bridges" the cable to your lights wirelessly.

Great video. I have a question. Will this allow me to use 2 different wireless dongles at the same time from one input source? I have ADJ wifly EXR and Donner dongles

Yes - but make sure your 2 dongles are on different wireless channels! Thanks!

Will you need a splitter to use multiple different lights or can you daisy chain any lights to work with dmx? I have Rockville par lights with a few different moving head lights

Hello sir. I was running a show for a wedding reception last night and o must say I was really happy with the outcome. All of a sudden, all my fixtures stopped working and now I don't even get a signal indication light on my moving heads 😓. I really felt embarrassed and I guess the fixtures were about 27 in all. Now, non of these (LEDs, moving heads and even the controller don't get any DMX signal). I want to find out, what exactly might be the problem and if possible any recommendations on how to fix the issue. Thank you in advance. 🙏

Sounds like a problem with your controller. I would contact wherever you bought it from for troubleshooting/replacement if necessary :)

@@LearnStageLighting I used a different controller with it and yet still, doesn't respond. If I use this same controller with other fixtures, they work.

Hi Sivaram, There are a lot of different options. If you have 80 lights, I'd take a look at something like the lightShark or the Onyx software. I talk about both a lot here on my channel (just search), and have even more resources inside of Learn Stage Lighting Labs: lp.learnstagelighting.com/learn-stage-lighting-labs/

How many splits can you use per console please David?

  • @LearnStageLighting

It's theoretically unlimited, splitters boost the signal. At some point ( with many, many splits) you'd run into some delay, but that's just not a problem we see

Total newbie question: Will splitting the DMX signal allow me to control more individual lights or does it only duplicate a specific DMX channel? In other words, I have a 24 fixture controller. If I use a splitter, will I be able to independently control more than 24 fixtures? I assume it only duplicates specific channels but would love for you to tell me otherwise.

It simply duplicates all the DMX signal - it does not allow you to have more channels/individual control.

@@LearnStageLighting thanks, that's what I figured. Tip for anyone watching this: NEVER buy a Rockville Rockforce 384. I bought one as an intro/starter unit because it would control 24 fixtures. The thing is, if you want to individually control more than 12 fixtures, you obviously have something in mind that goes WAY beyond what a Rockville Rockforce is capable of.
