How Do I Solder Thin Loops, Jump Rings, and Wires to Thick Pieces? HELP, I Melted My Jewelry
Many people struggle with soldering small pieces like wires, loops, and jump rings to larger pieces. I get many jewelers asking me to help them successfully solder their projects and have the confidence to move forward. In this short video, I explain a couple of principles that once understood, will help you achieve soldering success.
In this video, I show and explain how to prep your pieces so they will solder well, and stay strongly attached. Also I show how I solder with success in soldering thick and thin pieces together.

Thank you Dorene, so good to be back.
I'm a novice jeweler who has watched probably hundreds of jewelry-making videos. This is the first time I've seen the technique of putting a notch in the base piece in order to give more surface area when soldering a curved piece like a jump ring. Great tip! Thanks.

Marian, thank you for the kind comments. I like to think out of the box at times. Never quit asking why. Doug
When soldering in the notch put the join of your jump ring in the notch . It saves making 2 joins.

Maximum surface area.
Curious - are those jump rings used as tabs to hold your stone in place?

No, the bezel on the front holds the stone, the rings on the back are so the piece can be sewn onto a hat. These pieces are actually made for Carlos Santana, and he sews them to all his hats.
