How Do I Recharge My Car Battery | How Long To Charge A Car Battery At 2 Amps
/ @jpautofleet
I common question I receive from my customers is how do I recharge my car battery? I will cover this topic in today’s video and also expand on how long to charge a car battery at 2 AMPS.
Another question I get in regard to battery charging is how will I know when the battery is properly recharged if the charger I’m using doesn’t have a feature to show me that?
Before we get started, here’s a quick tip on battery chargers. For the home do it yourself person, I recommend a microprocessor-controlled charger. The car battery charger I show in this video was only $89 at O’Reilly’s auto parts store.
* Here is the link to the Battery Charger used in the video:
amzn.to/2IZ1sQp
This type of car battery charger is going to give you a safer, quicker more effective charger for your battery. This charger has protection built in to help prevent overcharging while maintaining the charge.
This charger has a feature that shows you the percentage of the charge, so you can monitor the progress. It also has a voltage feature. I’m not affiliated with this charger in any way, I’m just a fan of it.
So, to specifically answer the question of how do I recharge my car battery, here we go. The first thing we do when charging our battery is hook up red to positive and black to negative.
The next thing we need to do is select the battery type. A lot of car battery chargers won’t have this feature which is again why I’m a fan of this particular charger.
The three choices to select from are “standard”, “AGM” and “Gel” type of battery. Nine times out of 10 you are going to select the standard type. The standard option for car battery charging is the battery that is in an everyday vehicle. AGM and Gel options are for high performance and marine applications.
The next thing we do is select out rate of charge which means how intensely we want to charge the battery. One of the options for the rate of charge is an 85A setting, this is for jump-starting only.
The second option is a 30A “boost feature” which you can charge your battery with but you must be careful not to charge it too long as you can toast the battery. If you just want to select this option and charge it for a couple of hours, you can get away with it.
However, the safest, fastest, and most effective way to charge a battery is with the lowest setting which is 2AMP’s. How long to charge a car battery at 2 AMPS’s is the next question I receive a lot.
Now, this 2 AMP option will take longer, maybe even overnight but it is the best way to recharge a car battery by far. The “green light” will illuminate when the battery is finished and fully charged.
I hope this do it yourself training tutorial helped to answer the question of how do I recharge my car battery and save you time, money, and aggravation that can be associated with this process.

Exactly what I was looking for! Charging amps vs Jumpstart amps was confusing me, you explained it perfectly.
I am not at all good with cars, but I have an older one with a battery that keeps draining. I bought a charger and all the videos I watched were horrible. You made this as simple as it actually is. Thanks.

Thanks Man! Much appreciated. Question, I have a Mk 2 Focus that has an AGM battery. Is replacing with an AGM essential or will the lead acid type still work OK with my alternator?
Thanks always helpful !
Do I have to remove the battery from the car using the charger you suggested for a DIY at home?
Thank you so much! This was very helpful.

I have a question. On a deep cycle 12 volt battery when you are using the battery let's say for a trolling motor does the battery put off poison gas or is that only when you're charging the battery? Thanks

Most importantly, can you really put the charger's negative clamp directly on the battery's negative post?
Thanks JP that was helpful
Such good information, thank you! Taking all this info into account. Who knew? Not me! I had been having a problem with periodic dead battery, but it's my short trips and low speeds (15-20 mph) urban driving. Understand now that I need to charge the battery, not just start the car-so one question. Will a standard extension cord, the orange kind, work for this?
Good info, without getting too technical. Today's electronics make things SO much easier than back in the Good, Old Days.... :-)

Is this a better choice than the Noco gb150? (Not sure if they are chargers or just jumpers)
Good vid, very useful
your battery should indicate AGM or GEL on the label. If you charge these types on the standard setting, you will dry out the battery and drastically shorten the lifetime. AGM and Gel batteries use aa charging voltage of 14.5 volts whereas a standard (flooded) battery typically charges at 16 volts If you hear a liquid sloshing sound inside your battery, it is a standard type battery. AGM and Gel batteries do not have free flowing liquid acid in them. It is either bound up in a glass mat material or it is in gel form If you measure the voltage while the battery is still charging you will probably ready the charging voltage and not the battery voltage. You won’t know the battery voltage until the charger is disconnected for a few hours. Then you should measure 12.4 to 12.6 volts when fully charged

Helped me tremendously 🎉
I have a Schumacher SE-1052 with 50 amp engine start, 10 amp fast charge and 2 amp slow charge settings. It has an analog needle gauge to indicate both the DC amp draw and the percent of charge in the battery. The charge amperage tapers down as the battery nears full charge.
The one thing you didn't say was how long yet the title says how long. If the battery is a 110 ah charging it when it's flat at 2amp will take at the least 24 to 48 hrs (depends how flat), overnight will not charge it fully and a partially charged battery is next to useless.
Thank you sir!!
Thank you, very helpful! I have another question. How do i know if my battery or alternator is the problem? I was driving on the freeway the other day, when my battery and brake lights came on intermittently. I started loosing power and once I got off the freeway (I thank God that it happened then when I was also close to home rather than while I was still on the freeway), all the electric system shut down and my power steering too. Then at the first stoplight where I had to stop, my engine stopped too.

It's more than likely your alternator. If the battery was bad and you had a good alternator, the alternator would of kept the charge up and the car wouldnt of died. Just to be safe take the battery in to bd tested at the parts store for free. The battery will probably need to be recharged. Theres plenty of good videos on KZread on testing for a bad alternator. It's a simple test you can do with a multi meter. Hope this helps and thanks for the comment.
What would happen if you choose standard charge and later find the battery type to be AGM or gel type battery?
Thank you very much for your help 👍
Very informative video thanks

Thanks for the video, for long term charging (2 months ) with. A 6 amps charger is it good even if I not disconnect the battery on the car
Thanks. Good advice on how to recharge a battery.
my charger at work as 4 amps, 6 amps and 12 amps? what is the difference and for the forklift which setting is best?
Thanks this really helped a lot
I have sold charge with a meter line when hook the red o n and he black on I left in on for 4 hours and the meter line is going down do you it's full charge
Excellent video but one question. Why is the second choice 30 amp, that doesn't make much sense to me. My charger second choice is 12 Volt that's what I usually use when I need to use it.
Thanks! much appreciated.
Good to know, thanks for the information :)
Thanks...this is very helpful

I know this question is three years apart but do this apply to a sealed battery what about the chemical compounds the factory put in it originally?
Very Well Explained 😊
Great video 👍🏻
Great video. Thanks allot
You the man. Thanks boss
With a 12 volt charger, what is the difference between charging at 6 amps or 2 amps? Which amperage should I charge on?
Thank you!
Thank you very much!
I have a CAT CBC23E 25A charger. Because at night it frequently goes down to -20ºC, I hook the charger up to my Jeep 12V to top it off so there are no surprises in the morning. It starts off at 6A then trickles down to 2.0A after an hour. When I press the V check button the display says 15V. When I check the battery with a multimeter it says 12.7. Why is the CAT telling me the battery is 15V? Appreciate. Thanks for the simple DIY.
Thanks my friend I also shared this video
What car battery charger is the best in the market and that charges the fastest. I am also looking for that is affordable so if you give me a list maybe up to five I’d be much helpful right now I have a Stanley one amp and it’s taking forever. Thank you much

Hey there, I picked up a charger like the one in your video at a garage sale and realized later the cable connecters had been replaced with identical nickel plated clamps. Is there a simple way to determine which cable is positive? Thank you! Your video was clear & easy to comprehend btw.

Use a multimeter. It will show -xx volt reading if you meter plus from minus and minus from plus. Then mark the clamps with something.
@APIMPNAMEDSLICKBACK420

If you have the one he has it tells you if the clamps are reversed or not
My question is can or is there any way of which the battery can be used to power other things while still on charge? If no, then, one must be done.
Very helpful, thx!
