I took a masterclass from Joe Pass back in the 80’s, and he mentioned that when he was a kid, he wrote down the licks and voicings and other practice ideas in small slips of paper, folded them and put them in a bag, and picked one up at random to practice every day. I thought that was a wonderful idea.

That really was off the chain!

I listened to this video/lesson with great interest, a few times. I think that it helped me immensely with solving the dilemma that I have been struggling with for the last few months - I love and want to learn jazz but teaching this music form and the type of learning it requires (it is a form of apprenticeship) is completely incompatible with how I always learned and studied. I prefer very structured learning that does not rely on a teacher. What is even more difficult for me is the explicit admission that there are different forms of jazz and teaching depends very much on a teacher (no consistency). I will keep listening to Jeremy’s videos but I will not even try to implement what he is teaching and explaining, anymore. The problem is with me - not with jazz teaching! Back to classical music and learning from transcriptions of some jazz pieces (especially Keith Jarrett’s). Thank you Jeremy. Michael

Great video as always! Just out of curiosity; what are your other go-to Chopin etudes at the moment?

What is your advice on practice time per section? I think I'm gonna use this practice routine to go learn some harder Stevie Wonder tunes. I would love a tutorial about any of his songs. For the etudes, I like Bach's 2/3 part inventions to practice super clean articulation in both hands. I have transposed some of the two part ones very slowly.

Hey Kevnick! I started when I was about 4 years old. These days, I don't get to practice too much. It depends on when I have a performance coming up. When I was in college, I probably spent 6-8 hours each day on the piano, whether practicing or in rehearsals.

As much as possible! I mean, obviously, more time is better. I think in different points in one’s journey, time allotment varies by interest and need. I’d say musicians hoping to be too professionals should spend 7-10 hours each day on their instrument (including rehearsals and performances). Folks who want to be really great amateurs should go through a period when they spend 2-4 hours per day on their instruments. For hobbyists, they need to fit their practice into their schedule.

@@JeremySiskindThe question remain if hobbyists who practice only 1-1.5 a day can really be ever proficient playing jazz. Are they just wasting theirs time (especially if their time horizon of learning may be only two years or so)?

I feel like I've gotten into that analogy of just taking basketball shots, I want to get out and start playing, not just snippets and voicings.
