"How do I keep myself out of another depressive episode?" AKA 149

Ойын-сауық

This podcast finds licensed therapist Kati Morton talking about overcoming a severe depressive episode and suicide attempt. She discusses OCD and fears of being a parent, and even dives into whether or not it’s sometimes helpful to just ignore symptoms of PTSD and abuse. She also explains why we can want to recover from an eating disorder and still struggle with it. This and so many other topics in this week’s episode!
Ask Kati Anything ep. 149 | Your mental health podcast, with Kati Morton, LMFT
Audience questions:
1. I am recovering from a severe depressive episode where I attempted to commit suicide many times. My question is: What happens next?
2. I have OCD and I am terrified of becoming a parent. I imagine that I will be super hard on myself trying to parent “the right way,” and the fact that there are no clear-cut answers to everything will drive me crazy. There are so many disagreements out there about parenting and so much judgment...
3. Something at work regarding sexual abuse brought up memories that I’d always known were there but never thought they’d had an impact on me. I’m now realizing it’s probably had more of an impact that I thought and...
4. My question revolves around sexuality. I strongly resonate with the term "asexual", yet for some reason also long for a relationship. My therapist said that I might not be asexual, but simply feel this way due to fear coming from my past and c-ptsd…
5. I feel like 2023 should or could be the year I finish being in therapy. I will miss my therapist and especially miss having someone like her to talk to. I realize that everyone needs someone in their life that they can talk things...
6. Why can’t I recover from anorexia, even though I want to. I have almost always struggled with food restriction. From as young as I can remember, I’ve put self imposed “limits” on food intake amounts, food groups etc regardless of...
7. I'm in the process of getting diagnosed with ADHD, I'm 35. I've spent a lifetime struggling with depression and social anxiety and I'm hoping that maybe getting help for ADHD will help me with those two as well. I've read that ADHD can make it more difficult to do...
8. As a therapist, if you are seeing a client for a while and could recognise that they had been abused, would you tell the client? Let's say this client is oblivious and doesn't realize that the other person's behavior was abusive towards...

I just started therapy after being diagnosed with depression in March 2022. I let my therapist know how I learnt about enmeshment from your videos. I even sent them the link and they seemed genuinely interested, just wanted to post this here 😊

Is it possible that an ED, depression and triggers from past trauma becomes nothing more than a habit? I feel like I've worked on and processed everything I know to be wrong with me, even if some people don't agree that I have, but I still live a miserable life revolved around managing my ED, constantly trying to avoid the feelings of depression, hopelessness and memories. There is nothing wrong in my life presently that makes the issues valid. I am in control of my life more than I've ever been and have brought myself up from the trenches so there is nothing for me to be dismayed about in my life.. Yet I still cannot stop ED behaviors and intrusive feelings and thoughts. I have nothing left to try, it seems.

I don’t know if the person who asked the first question will see this. But I would also consider looking at how long these swings are when up and down. Consider also looking at Bipolar/ Bipolar 2 disorder. The swings can be sever depression with the swing of irritability.

I am asexual! I also like men and women. My therapist of 5 years still has trouble understanding what it means, especially since I've been in a stable and happy relationship (married my first boyfriend) for 6 years now and have a healthy s3x life. There are a LOT more of us than you think! And online communities and support groups have been really helpful in accepting, understanding, and enjoying my sexual identity.

For the last 8 or so months I have been feeling alot of anger after I cry, usually I feel and empty calm, but the last 6 or so months, most of the time I just feel this anger that don't seem to shake or wane off. My question is: Why? Is it connected to grief in some way, if so... will the anger subside at some point?

To normalize, seeking therapy is for more than treating mental illness. You would tell them you were going to therapy the same way you would tell them you were going to the doctor… You don't have to give any details, just a matter of fact, when it's appropriate. Again, to normalize emotions and coping skills and communication skills etc. And like Katie?? said, the sooner the better for teaching emotional intelligence to our children

@@progressivedragon6664 parents could still teach that to their kids without mentioning they are in therapy. There is such a thing as putting too much on a kid. Adults do not need to share every detail and could be more damaging causing kids to be really worried. Just like mom doesnt need tell a little kid shes getting her yearly pap smear. Also it literally makes no sense to go to therapy if a person doesn't have a mental illness.

@@coffeeandhorses7991 Going to therapy if you don't have a mental illness makes *perfect* sense. Life is hard, and sometimes it helps to have someone to talk things through with. You don't have to have a mental illness to benefit from therapy. Mindsets like yours stigmatize seeking help. I totally agree with Progressive Dragon and wish toxic mindsets like yours would disappear.
