How Do I Keep Deer Out of My Bird Feeders?

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

Deer can be a problem at bird feeder stations. There are ways to deal with deer so that you can continue to feed your birds by working around their feeding limitations.
Mark McKellar is a wildlife biologist with over 35 years of bird study experience. He has a degree in Fish and Wildlife Sciences from North Carolina State University and has worked for the Department of the Army, the Wildlife Departments of North Carolina and Missouri. He ran nature centers for many years in Missouri and Pennsylvania before buying the Backyard Bird Center in the Northland area of Kansas City. Mark has led hundreds of bird hikes both locally and abroad. He has taught classes about birds and other wildlife to groups of all ages and brings that knowledge to the customers of his retail business every day. I never worry about the deer. I loose a feeder now in early winter now and then but where I am the deer are feeding for their lives before heavy winter. In fact I load the feeders with oil at night just for them. Here by mid December they are gone like clock work to the cedar swamps.

My husband was going to take our feeder down due to deer eating the seed. We left it empty for a night, but filled it the next day and the deer must come every night to check it. It was gone again. We are extending the pole to 6 feet as you suggest. Thank you for the video. You kept our little birds from going without. 😀

I am looking to somehow raise my shepard’s hook, since I cannot find any that would keep the bird feeder high enough.

It depends on the type of hook. Erva makes an extension for their shepherd hooks.

I use a thistle feeder in the summer and a suet feeder and a window feeder in the winter. All are pretty much deer proof and everyone is happy, except the deer. 😉

Our problem is we have a neighbor who feeds deer year round! We’ve asked fish and game but were told it wasn’t against the law as long as it wasn’t a hunting bait station, it was not unlawful but very dangerous to the deer as they feed nose to nose which is dangerous for degenerative disease to easily spread throughout the herd. We’ve informed them but to no avail. 😟 They don’t bother our feeders, but do leave droppings in our yards plus it attracts other wildlife like raccoons and squirrels which have caused problems for some neighbors.

It is a widespread problem, especially in urban areas. I do what I can through the store to educate folks but some are just going to do it anyway.

Thanks! Had a beautiful buck at my feeder this morning, but the seed is too expensive for him to eat. The habanero oil doesn’t bother the birds? Do you pour it on the seed or just on the openings?

The oil doesn't harm birds. They have a different taste system plus their body temperatures are 105 degrees. You mix 3 tablespoons of the Flaming Squirrel to 5 lbs of bird seed in and mix it. I always say like the old "Shake N' Bake".
