My name is Abbie Emmons I teach writers how to make their stories matter by harnessing the power and psychology of storytelling, transforming their ideas into a masterpiece, and creating a lifestyle that makes their author dreams come true.
Story isn’t about “what happens” - it’s about how what happens affects and transforms the characters. I believe that there is an exact science (a recipe, if you will) behind a perfect story. And if you know what ingredients you need, you can create your own perfect story with ease and confidence. That’s what we talk about every week on this channel - and if it’s something you’re into, be sure to subscribe and join this community!

I would point to the opening scene of Avatar, because i'm obsessed, as the perfect example. It focused on their relationship, two siblings fishing, they establish Sokka as insecure and cocky in his first two lines, Katara uses her bending and so establish that part of the world and that Sokka doesn't have bending followed by her character as both motherly and then her temper, also foreshadowing how powerful she can be with her bending. Both their characters, their world, and their relationships shown in half a scene. Enter Aang and his character also shown the other half of the scene. Perfect show, I'm telling ya.

Hey!! Diving into Preptober/Nano for the first time ever. (I know!!!) So excited. I roughly plotted book 1 for a series from January - May. And since then I've been writing backstory chapters that kind of turned into 10,000 words and may end up being a prequel some day hahaha.. SO, now I'm making myself in October finish my character profiles, review my outline, complete the world building so I can start writing in when November gets here! Its mostly a secret: Fantasy series featuring the Greek Gods with a Twist.

Yes i will do Nanowrimo. It's the third time and for me it's also unbelievable not doing Nanowrimo. Since i started i can't wait that November is coming every year. Since then it is most productive time of the year for me because i have a goal then and the motivation is just different. I will writing a romance with some crime/thriller elements. But the important focus is that my main character achieves her dreams. Thanks to you and other youtuber i am plotting a lot this year. I realized i'm not a pantser and need to organize and plan most of my novel. I hope this helps me to know where i want to go and finish this novel and maybe but just maybe i will publish this one. At least it feels much better this year because i have all these scenes outlined . So Thank you Abbie for all your work to help us writers

A device I am using in my WIP is I introduce each major character with a close-up of a part of their body that is relevant to their story role. It is an SF novel and I use the device of my ship-board AI's POV to facilitate this. That and each character's unique voice, values and personality mean (I hope) I don't need to fill in too many details as the story develops. Workshopping colleagues' feedback is that this works for them.

The story can introduce the main character in the middle of an ongoing conflict that doesn't have anything to do with the main plot of the story, but you just need to have it important to the character so it's part of defining your character. In the first chapter of my book my main character is waiting to ambush his girlfriend's father, which he's done multiple times already. His girlfriend's father is abusive. She doesn't want my character to turn her father in, but he feels he has to do something, so he's regularly trying to literally beat some sense into her father in a way that he hopes can spark some change. So there you go. Internal and external conflict for the character right off the bat. I guess what I'm doing and what I suggest, is to use one of your subplots in this way. The main plot you have to start from the beginning, but you can start in the middle of a subplot conflict to introduce and make your protagonist active right away before the inciting incident or key event occurs to pull your character into the plot.

I want to write an antagonist that used to be an ally, but I don't know how to properly put a flashback into my book without cutting the pacing and not telling something like "a younger version of" or "someone who looks similar to". But I guess it would be stupid if I don't tell that it's the person who's flashback we are being shown. I might as well give some context. The book will be about a newly crown king who wants to change the country for the betterment of the inhabitants. He despises killing people and seeing suffering because of a childhood trauma. He has 4 Elite Soldiers asigned to him by his late father. One of them being the person I want to make the flashback about. To get the privilage of becoming a soldier, that elite soldier had to get through several sacrifices such as the death of his parents to test his loyalty and fighting against comrades to death to surpress his emotions. Seeing that the new king is emotionally unstable and what he considers an unhealthy mindset to seek help from other countries, he thinks that the new king is endangering the country more than it helps. So the backstory I want to tell is, how he got the privilage to be trained. The harsh invironments he trained and some of the people he met, as well as bits of how the main character's father is going through horrific length to strengthen his army.

Abbie has a video on flashbacks that I personally found very useful, maybe is what you need :) You can also play with the timeline of the story, going back and forth and so there's technically no flahabacks only bits of the story that happens in differents times

I have changed so much from watching your videos.I'm doing my own NaNO but I'm still really excited. My advice is that you don't have to do 50k words.Even if your an adult, don't pressure yourself to do something that you don't feel comfortable doing because 50k is a lot.I'm sure there's there's juniors program on the nano website for any teens.I'm writing this whilst watching so im going to gave to rewatch lol.

Gosh, I'm low-key starting to freak out because we're halfway through October. I still have a couple of things I need to finish before November, and I'm starting wonder if I even can. 😅 I think I've done Camp NaNoWriMo with a novel I was in the middle of before, so I've totally done it like you're going to do for NaNoWriMo before 😃 (Except I think I only wanted to write 20k. So that's way less. 😂) I love your advice on starting a novel; it totally makes sense to start after the book is a few ticks into the story, and I like thinking about having things planned from before the book even begins so I can make it emotional in the first scene readers see. I think my first 'serious' book I wrote had 6 characters in it, too. As you talked about introducing 6 characters in the same scene, I instantly got flashbacks to how horribly I did that in my own book. 😅 Looooots of stopping to describe each of them. Awesome video, as always! 😄

I’ve been rewriting a new version of my first project that I’ve been working on since middle school and there isn’t really a main character and every chapter is a person’s different POV and on how they meet new characters there’s 80 characters involved and the stories a bit fast passes so how do I slow the story down a bit?

You forgot the backstory link. Good thing we can search it. 🙂 glad for the choice of questions. I've been wanting to ask most of them. I personally dislike prequels. As you said, they don't tend to be as strong. Also, don't like having to go backward in a story that far before going forward. (Star Wars did an awful job) For Nanowrimo, I also hope to finish this draft. I made scene cards, and am almost done with act 1; the cards really help. In spite of making changes as I go, the plot, the basic "where is this going" is stable.

I know how much you talk about internal conflict, and my character has internal conflicts, but more and more I start to notice that my character may have too many external conflicts and I don’t know what to do, cause I still want to carry out the whole plot of the story, which is about her internal conflicts. What do I do to balance it out?

My Nanowrimo project (Which I'm actually starting in October because there's no way I'll have time to write in December) is a fantasy novel that it meant to parallel racial tensions in our world. It follows a teenage girl who's been under a sleeping curse for the last five years. When she wakes up, she finds herself a target for several assassinations. With the help of the young queen, she has to find out who's trying to kill her.

Yay! So excited for the new video! Covid-19 has given me an idea for a futuristic/dystopian novel (unsure if young adult, new adult, or adult yet). I know dystopian stories are sort of played out right now and not as popular, but I’m hoping that the pandemic has set a stage for my book... what do you all think?

#askAbbie I've watched a decent amount of your vids so far, including the one about a Negative Character Arc. Didn't know there was such a thing. Anyway, I've been working on a story off and on. Wrote a little bit of it as well, but never really got far past the first chapter. I know how the story will start and how it will end, but as far as everything in between, it's kinda "up in the air?" I could give you the premis if you want, so you'll know what I'm going for. -PS - How would I go about making it resemble a musical? (kinda like the movie Trolls, the characters themselves sing, but the songs are really just covers of the originals)

I'm doing a Regency romance. I have a completed outline and I'm slogging through the scene cards (genius - I've made several major revisions when I realized I had scenes with absolutely no purpose). I'm doing the background research as I hit the snags in every scene card (how many people lived in Portsmouth in 1810? How much could a chic London governess earn?) I hope to have that all done well in time for NaNoWriMo.
