How do I get my IRS penalty waived? Just ask nicely!?

Don't just pay the penalty! You have to AT LEAST call to see if they'll forgive it as part of a first time abatement. Spoiler alert, most of the time they do! You just need to make sure you are in otherwise good standing. Most people don't even know this exists, and they pay millions in penalties every year unnecessarily. Remember we are not talking about tax forgiveness but rather how to waive the penalties assessed for paying tax late or filing your tax return late.

In 2000, I wrote a couple of books related to buying tax delinquent properties in New Mexico. At the time, there was no right of redemption, that is, when the property was sold, there was no right to get it back. This is because the property had several years of back taxes owed, typically 4, before being sold. EXCEPT the IRS had 120 days to file for redemption. I interviewed a former IRS agent for the book. He said the agency would usually waive its right and remove its lien in most cases, because if the property was worth anything, the IRS would likely have already seized it. A polite request tended to get good results.

Hi, thanks for your efforts. What is the number that I should call to request for abatement. None of the numbers I found on google work - I didn’t receive the notice for payment from IRS yet.

I tried this and it was a total waste of time. Anyone that I was able to talk to has their hands tied by rules and regulations. Don't get your hopes up. If you try it I wish you luck.

It does become more difficult if you've used the penalty abatement within the last 5 years
