My aunt was gay growing up, I didn’t even notice it. Around 11-12 my mom just came in an explained some people are attracted to certain people. It was a 10 min explanation, I was told to just be nice and don’t bring it up. People are people. Over and done and that was it. Why do people make such a big deal about this!?

I think that back in the day people didn't make a huge deal out of it, but today the LGBTXYZ community is forcing us to either 100% celebrate their views or else we are the devil. That environment and mindset kind of pisses a lot of people off who would otherwise just be neutral.

As a Christian mom of 6, is it VERY hard to navigate this issue in a secular world. All you can do is explain to your children what the Bible says on these issues, but it is ultimately up to them to decide if they believe the same way as you. The most important things you can teach your kids are to be kind and love others.

As a still christian lgbtq person, some people may see that as an oxymoron, but I'm not perfect and no one will shun me away from Jesus.... I digress. But keeping things open ended and allow for conversation will help prevent your kids from hiding and promotes trust that you are a safe person to come to. I hid and lied because of shame. When she said she was raised in a Christian household that was unloving towards some folks and legalistic, I so wanted to hug her and tell her that I so know what she had experienced! Mercy prevails over judgement. Compassion/dignity/respect is what should be always be extended. There is a bible verse that we are to be compassionate and hospitable towards others because we never know when we are accommodating angels. There are certain things to be immoveable on. But the compassionate heart is still on display. To share one's faith and beliefs ought not to be an argument or a debate as to who is right or who is wrong. The truth always comes to light. The truth is like a lion. It doesn't need defending because it is able to defend itself. The fact that she is asking questions is a great step in towards becoming a teachable spirit. Godly wisdom will teach us what to hold on to loosely and what to hold fast to.

The Christian religion is a false religion like all the others. Its scripture is full of natural error contradictions and the mandating of evil. Yahweh is an ancient Midianite storm deity, as real as Zeus and Thor. The Christian religion can never be true because it proclaims falsehoods and can never be good because it mandates evil. I am an apostate of this blood cult, and I will fight it till I die, as it is a scourge on both the society and individual that practices it.

@@janedoe3648 About half of the books in the new testament are forgeries, including half of paul's letters. The bible says that witches exist. The bible that you know today is a patchwork of hundreds of contradictory manuscripts, none of which are original works, only copies of copies of copies ridden with errors. People call it the "word of god", but we literally have no idea what the original words were. You can even see it in your standard bible. For example, (depending on which translation you are reading) the end of the gospel of mark often comes with a footnote explaining that the oldest manuscripts don't contain the final verses that you see, but the translators threw it in anyway because later manuscripts include it even though it is likely that some scribe pulled it out of their ass a long time ago. What about the "let he who is without sin cast the first stone" story? Yep, it wasn't originally in oldest manuscripts of the gospel of John. A script added it later. Jesus never said that. Even if we had the originals, none of the original authors ever met Jesus or even spoke the same language as him. The bible is a comically fragmented error-ridden patchwork of human inventions and mistakes. Or how about Noah's flood? The story of a guy building a boat because god told him to and saving all the animals on it and sending out a bird to search for land is not a bible story. Ancient religions from that region contain the same story. For example, in the Epic of Gilgamesh, you have basically the same story as Noah's flood with most of the same details, and that predates anything in the old testament by at least 1000 years. Ancient jews copied the story when they were inventing their own god. Thousands of gods have been invented by humans, what are the chances that the one you happened to born into is real? Basically 0. Set yourself free from the brainwashing.

Approaching with hospitality first is a good rule, but also to try to look through eyes of compassion and empathy. I think that will never fail you or the people you interact with. I think it's also healthy to understand all points of view, but to respect that everyone may have their own views, and that maybe everyone can't be 100% correct all of the time. It is also okay to hold personal views as long as we are honest to ourselves, and this can mean that you have studied those topics extensively to understand all the for and against arguments. As humans, we can only decide for ourselves what we think is right, but we should remain open-minded and pursue debates to figure out the best truth for ourselves.

That`s because the direct answer would be: Yes, christianity is hateful. Decide if you want to be a biblical christian or if you want to have a conscience, some actual morality and love for other people, you can`t have both. Also be prepared to kill your own child for god, like Abraham would have done. So being hateful against LGBT+ people just is in line because if you won`t accept your gay kid that can lead to them killing themselves and so you sacrificed your child for god, like Abraham, your role model. It all works out. I mean you can also choose to do a lot of mental gymnastics and ignore the parts of the bible that are homophobic. That`s what a lot of christians in Europe do. The preaching actively against gay people, like that is the most important thing to talk about on sundays in church, is something the US has cultivated and tries to export.

I think for me, I teach my kids that people's choices are just that! And that I will love them no matter what. I find that a lot of middle school girls... not my kids, but friends and acquaintances, want to identify as bisexual or trans before their hormones are all in place. I tell my kids to accept people, but also, that as a parent, I would not agree with something permanent that they may regret later, until they are old enough to sign on the dotted line and pay for their own. They will not come back to me later and ask how I could let them do something the regret. I will love them no matter what.

Yeah... Not trans, but I don't like the eagerness that people are showing to blocking a child's hormones. Your body is meant to develop is certain ways to grow strong and healthy. If a girl gets testosterone that is life altering and in some aspects irreversible. I identify as lesbian. Didn't until I was in my early 20's. I felt nothing other than friend feelings for guys (made stupid mistakes trying to force myself to "become straight" thank goodness I didn't get to the point of a possible pregnancy.) and I couldn't put a finger on why I was so content with just being with a girl best friend. I think I'm happy I didn't try to force a label when I was younger. I support finding yourself, but do it in ways that aren't irreversible and harmful if your first idea is wrong. If it wasn't, take measures to make your body look the way you want at 18.

I mean technically you’re correct about the not judging people as worse than others because of specific sins; we are all sinners and therefore have fallen short of God’s perfection. But I stand firm that it’s biblical to hate sin in general. We hate injustices, we hate evil, we hate wrongdoings. And we should especially hate sin because it is a big deal-it’s what separates us from God! Because we’re slaves to it, we don’t realize just how big of a deal it is. So for another example with a murderer: I should care for the person and love them and have a desperate desire for them to repent and find forgiveness and salvation through Jesus, but I believe I would be justified in hating the fact that they killed someone. And in the Old Testament God literally spoke judgement on the Israelites for overlooking sins and not caring when wrongdoings were being committed. So again, sin matters to God and He sees the whole picture. But there is the balance of loving people, showing people God’s grace. I guess the main thing I struggle with is how exactly do we love people? Jesus spoke softly and graciously while at other times he was firm and angry laying out truth, and of course he was perfect and knew what hearts needed what approach. But being loving-what does that look like exactly? Say if someone is driving towards a cliff or doing something that is clearly dangerous, the loving thing to do would be to tell them the truth like “hey you’re making a mistake and the path you’re on will lead to your demise” in order to save them, no matter how uncomfortable it is. Please, anyone feel free to discuss this because it is a difficult topic! Again, my main struggle is knowing what practical love looks like in certain situations. Ephesians 4:15 says to speak the truth in love, so I take it to mean that: 1. Telling someone the truth without love is wrong (loud gong or clanging cymbal) 2. Loving someone without telling them the truth is wrong also (because you may not be spreading love in light of eternity, like how will they know they need a savior if no one tells them they’re fallen like us?) For me the difficulty lies in knowing in what exactly to do in different situations…

I came out when I was 20. It was very difficult for my folks and other people in my family. When I admitted to my parents that “I was attracted to other men”. I didn’t use the word that ends in s€x, I felt it would soften the blow a bit. It didn’t, I was given 30 minutes to pack what I wanted, leave house and car keys on the table, and get out. It was tough, I was in shock. After many years of trying to make my world less complicated to my folks, they seemed to finally realize it wasn’t some faze. At the same time I was dealing with the deaths of 2 men I had dated. My extended family knew nothing of these relationships, so their sympathy was never offered to me. At one point a family event was approaching. My mother asked if I was going to be there. That’s when I said I was tired of not feeling welcome enough to be able to bring any guy I might be seeing at the time. I told her if I couldn’t be treated like anyone else, I’d not be attending them anymore. She thought about for a week and gave her permission. After the shock of seeing us arrive together and introducing him to everyone, that hurdle was finished. In 1990, I met the man who became my husband. We were suddenly thrust into the world of which family got what holiday from us. My boyfriend’s mother tried to squeeze more holidays out of us, but she had to just deal with it. It all worked out. After a few years we were sitting around the dining table of his folks house and one of his nephews blurted out, while looking at us “which one is the mommy and which is the daddy”. Everyone’s eyes bugged out. My boyfriend and I sat laughing. We knew it would come out some time. His mother didn’t handle it too well. She told them some silly thing about “of course I had a mommy and daddy” and sho’ed them away to put on pajamas. When she came downstairs she was flustered. I looked at her and said “now you know when they start asking questions, that’s when they’re old enough to know. She looked at me and said “BUT I DONT WANT TO”. I don’t think she ever told them. The children on my side of the family never asked anything and had always referred to my boyfriend as “uncle”. We got married 10 years ago and have been together 34 years.

About half of the books in the new testament are forgeries, including half of paul's letters. The bible says that witches exist. The bible that you know today is a patchwork of hundreds of contradictory manuscripts, none of which are original works, only copies of copies of copies ridden with errors. People call it the word of god, but we literally have no idea what the original words were. A scribe added it later. There is nothing wrong with you.

If you're Christian, you believe we were ALL made in God's image. The Bible was written by men, and over 4,000 years it was translated over 26 different languages (most of those are dead languages that were lost to time for centuries) before it was written in English. There's nothing anti gay or anti abortion in it. It says man should not have sex with children(the irony of the Catholic Church is not lost on me) and there's actually 3 or 4 different parts that say under certain circumstances you should have an abortion.

@@bartholomewhalliburton9854 well 1. If a baby does not have a set sexuality at birth, you are implying that sexuality is formed/created by your environment (or is a choice), even tho we know that is not true. Let’s take homosexuality for example, it is seen all around the world in different environments of different shapes and sizes, open-minded and closed, so therefore it is not shaped by environment. 2. Another reason we know sexuality is set would be the examples of people who are gay and have know since they were young, in some cases “gay personalities” (aka more fem traits) can even be seen at a young age. 3. Everything about us is in our dna, yet again similar to point 1, if our sexuality is not set (also meaning it is not in our dna), this would mean that outside influence such as environment from point 1, or other influences like viruses/diseases could influence this, you would then be implying that being gay or any other sexuality could be seen as a side effect of a disease. Basically there can be no “neutral/ unwritten sequence/s” of dna that changes without cause, such as people who go through chemo having straight hair and ending up with curly hair at the end of chemo therapy. Hopefully I explained it well enough, mostly what I am saying is that by saying we have no set sexuality, it is implying it is a choice/can be influence.

@@LittleMonkey425 Thank you. I agree that it isn't entirely the environment (as in particular life events) that causes homosexuality, due to your same reasons. However, I disagree that those same reasons imply the environment has no effect on a person's sexuality. There are pairs of identical twins where one is gay, and the other is straight. Now, these two people would have the same DNA, so if sexuality was determined solely by nature, both twins would necessarily have the same sexuality. The existence of even one pair of identical twins where this is the case implies that the environment must have some influence on sexuality, just like it does with any other preference. Note that I never said it was the choice of a person to be gay; a person does not choose his or her environment. There are examples where people are predisposed to certain things in their DNA but won't have it unless it gets triggered. For example, some people are predisposed to have sociopathy, and might or might not get it depending on their experiences growing up. Although sociopathy is bad and homosexuality isn't, I believe sexuality falls in this same vein.

Of course not. There are many evil gay people because there are many evil people in general. That is no excuse to use these books that are in natural error and self contradictory to set up personal or societal morality.

I left the LGBTQ+ community and found God through Jesus Christ instead after my life became a spiral heading downhill. As someone who use to live bisexual, I now understand what is actually considered fear and hate vs loving a person but not accepting the community. It’s not what God intended, but we have free will to sin or follow our shepherd. So we can respect their decisions. But calling anyone homophobic for tolerating but not accepting it doesn’t make sense to us Christians. I use to think homophobia was anyone that told me they did not agree with my beliefs! My fear instead is in my savior who will save me for all eternity from the secular world, not those who will condemn me. We’re called to train up our kids as in the way of the Lord, but when they’re adults, if they make their own decisions we can only hope they come back to their Creator.

@@Btone1018 I believe the Bible from front to back. It is historically accurate, scientifically accurate, full of physiological accuracy, and has survived 1,000s of years. It contains prophecies that have been fulfilled. I believe even the parts I don’t understand fully. I understand that a person’s sexual orientation seems like a personal matter but it isn’t. I realize there are some people who don’t cause any harm to anyone but themselves by being homosexual, however, we all know that this is opening pandora’s box of problems for the entire society. The sexual exploitation of others will continue to get worse as long as we allow all sexual immorality. (Including fornication, adultery, homosexuality, and bestiality) The acceptance of fornication has led to adultery, which has led to homosexuality, which is leading to bestiality. I used to think that it was too harsh of a punishment when I would read in the Bible that a person who committed adultery was to be stoned. However, just think of what our current world would look like if people were afraid of being stoned for cheating and sex before marriage! How many single parent homes would we have? Crime rates goes down significantly when the dad is in the home. Imagine what that would be like! Children’s health goes up when they have a father in the home. Kids with both parents are smarter and more resilient. Kids have a stronger moral compass when Dad is in the home. When mom is able to be in her nurturing role she creates beauty, healthy food, love, and a beautiful culture. What do we want most in our society? Smart, healthy, resilient people with a good moral compass and a high aim at life. The Bible teaches us how to attain this. It also teaches that their have been societies who have tried different sexual practices and they all fail. As personal as sex is it effects everyone. While you personally might not believe the Bible, this man claims that he does but he has a weak spine against sexual sin. It’s too bad. I bet if you had a one on one conversation with him he would tell you that anything outside of man and wife isn’t ideal but he doesn’t want to stand against the mob. 😕

Sexual Orientation is an innate property of LGBTIQA+ people, just as being straight is. The significant difference is that straight kids don’t have to come out. Throughout history, LGBTIQA+ people have existed, so the binary gender norms haven’t existed, except as a construct by a group of people, and in this context, Christians. Kids who come out as LGBTIQA+ are not confused. Studies indicate that a person's understanding of their sexual orientation is defined around ten years of age. It may take a few years to understand it, mainly if you are LGBQA+ and you have no understanding or a negative understanding of the range of sexual orientations. Therefore, the kids are not confused when they present themselves. The confusion, in my opinion, is within the conservative ‘Christian’ churches that use a minority group to hate and create fear as one of the mechanisms to control. t-the congregations.

Okay, I get that John's motive is very different so it's less about bashing him, but the frustrating part I have on these kinds of conversations is the reality that yes, let us all praise this mother for questioning her bigoted ideas. Thank you. It's still a choice she has made, to believe in bigotry, and that is still causing immense harm if her children are queer. It's also bigotry that specifically LGBTQ+ people experience that we are intimately connected to those who often harm us the most. It would be the equivalent of say a white grandmother who had a bi-racial grandchild, and she was "questioning" her "bigoted" beliefs about black people while vocalizing that it's wrong, to be black to her grandchild. I have no doubt John would be laying the law down with this grandmother, or advising the parents to completely get her the f*ck out of their child's life. IT'S THE SAME FUCKING THING to queer people, but because it's "religious beliefs" it's all.. "yay you're questioning." I'm sorry, but because queer people are so intimately connected to our abusers, you cannot separate bigoted beliefs and lgbtq+ political advocacy from interpersonal relationships when it comes to these conversations.

If I was a parent I would tell the truth. I'd be honest. I would say I will always love you no matter what, if you were starving I'd feed you, give you the shirt off my back. However I find that when most christians confuse welcoming with condoning. For me I would never attend a gay wedding though, because I feel by attending said wedding you're condoning the lifestyle.

@@Dnttou0497 I doubt parents who refuse to attend their child's gay wedding want him to be alone for the rest of his life. Obviously, those parents likely want their child to marry a woman, which would mean quite the opposite. The reason they wouldn't want to attend their child's wedding is because they believe homosexuality is a sin and want to make it a point to their child that they don't want to encourage it. In their eyes, it is like celebrating a child's smoking problem. Of course, I would be hurt if my parents didn't accept an invitation from me to a celebration of my 10000th cigarette where all of my friends and other relatives were going. But their idea in not coming would be so I could realize I don't have the support of my parents, so I must be doing something really wrong in their eyes and there should be a conversation. I realize that this analogy is slightly faulty in the sense that most homosexuals don't become straight if they push themselves away from their sexual desires, while many smokers do become healthy when they push away from their temptations.

@@Dnttou0497 The purpose of the analogy was to show the viewpoint of parents who wouldn't attend their child's gay wedding. They see homosexuality as something some people are tempted to do, even though they shouldn't. In their eyes, their child is officially separating themself from God by marrying someone from the same sex. By doing this, in the eyes of these parents, they are hurting themself. What makes this different to parents not supporting their child smoking, even though smoking makes their child happy? Of course, to lgbt supporting people, the analogy makes no sense.

@@bartholomewhalliburton9854 I understand the premise, but it’s a crap analogy because it’s clear you assume being gay is inherently damaging to a person’s health in general, and should be reprimanded and rebuked by the general public in the same way that smoking is. I wonder if you imagine all gay people everywhere to be oversexed, drugged out, disease-ridden lunatics. What of gay people who live in committed, monogamous relationships that live extremely ordinary and productive lives? We do exist.

Being gay or lesbian is not a choice it’s how some people are created. God creates all life so who are we to tell him he was wrong? All that matters to me is are they good people, are they loving, kind, contributing members of society? That’s it, gay and lesbian people have no wish whatsoever to impose their way of life on anyone else. Let’s not do that to them

As a teacher I just say some people have a mommy and daddy or two moms or two dads. Make it normal otherwise it will fuel shame or hate in children. Separately I teach that all people are equal and should be loved/respected. So regardless of conservative or liberal views treat people kindly with an open heart. Also children should be loved regardless of ANY factors.

How about as a teacher you stick to the subject you are paid to teach and not try to "make it normal" when it comes to things many parents do NOT want propagandized to their kids? It is NOT your job to get involved with moral issues. How would you like it if a teacher was teaching your kids to believe a religion you didn't want them converted to? Then WHY would you teach them secular things against the parents will?? You are the perfect example of why parents are so weary of the brainwashing that goes on in schools.

I think Dr. John should have more courage about this subject. Christianity is not “just welcome everyone” and he knows it. Bible says homosexuality is a sin, period. If he discusses lgbtq+ from religious perspective, he should say that that’s what the Bible says. He shouldn’t talk about this people think this and other people believe that and all this ambiguous stuff. It’s not homophobic to say that it is a sin according to Christian faith. We should of course all love homosexuals and everyone as equals because we are all sinners. But that doesn’t change the fact that Bible says what is says. Again, I mention Bible because the discussion is from religious point of view.

Just because people choose opposite of what we believe does not mean we need to accept it.
