Idk if im the first one to point this out, but DogDay's description back at PlayCare describes him as someone who loves the day and uplifts anyone's spirits. Hes the 'leader' of the critters and is quite selfless. Seeing him being the last surviving and sane Smiling Critter makes his suffering more tragic. Especially when he prioritizes your safety in expense of his own saying 'theres nothing left to save here' just so you can leave and not think about him suffering

sadly, he likely is.... nothing suggests that the small plush ones eat EVERYTHING. if we assume that most characters don't have a proper skeleton (which is assumed from the flexibility of the limbs of the other characters and the lack of visible bones where Dogday was torn open), there would be plenty of space inside after the major muscles controlling the body are consumed. based on this assumption, Dogday is both alive and conscious, but the remaining bodily structures aren't strong enough to fight against the small ones. the choking sound instead of comprehensible speech is most likely a result of muscles that hold/form the vocal chords to the throat being eaten, damaged, or just compressed.... while a gruesome fate, it brings the possibility that he may return later on. plus, the way he reacts when he hears the small ones approaching implies that this isn't the first time this has happened to him. OBVIOUSLY THIS IS A THEORY BASED ON CURRENT INFORMATION, SCIENTIFIC PRINCIPLES, AND LOGICAL ASSUMPTIONS ABOUT THE ANATOMY OF THE CHARACTERS.

Dogday is MUCH smaller than Catnap and the arms have stickes as if it is a suit, it also doesn't seem to have mechanical parts sticking out of it, Dogday very much looks like a dude in a suit. Even more interesting: his eyes are pitchback and dont have white lights in it like the other critters, untill the small critters get inside of him, only then it gets the lights. I hope it's coincidence and he's not a human in a costume, but even the bear looked much bigger than him, so could very well be that not all critters had a bigger body project and that some were simply employees in a suit. Another interesting note: How does Dogday know we're Poppy's angel? He's locked up and not even supposed to know Poppy as she was locked up till we showed up. So somebody must have been communicating with him about the recent events happening.

Even rewatching this is hard because of the grotesque nature of the death. DogDay is already on death's door, and just listening to his inners being eaten is bone chilling. I've always had a fondness for gorey things like Something Sweet to Bite, Don't Hug Me I'm Scared, but this just hits differently. I think this scene is meant to set up the idea that "you can not save everyone" and that frightens me.

One small detail that's maybe interesting to know, is when does the glowy eyes of dogday appear after being... "Possessed" .
