the day after thanksgiving came to be known as black friday because this is the day retailers hope to make a huge profit, when their profit margins would go "in the black" as it were as opposed to losing money and that would be called being "in the red" - I suppose for UK retailers it's the same principle

Cheers! I’ve read different things about it. Hopefully this year it truly is a Black Friday for retailers 😊

Thanks Sunny. Enjoyable and informative as ever. As someone who’s British - I’ve always understood the reason for the your Thanksgiving. But it’s great to get other information I wasn’t aware. Basically the intricacies- such as what food you traditionally have and how it’s viewed as the start of the holiday season etc. As for Black Friday, it’s something we’ve imported very recently from America. There’s no reason for it - apart from the obvious consumerism. I expect companies needed another reason to bring the punters in. As you’ll already know - more or less the same as Boxing Day and New Years Day sales over here.

Cheers! Boxing Day still intrigues me. I always associate it with sales and leftovers (Bubble and Squeak). What would you say to an American who asked you to explain it?

@@Sunny_in_London Yep, you’re right to about Boxing Day. I’d just explain it to someone as an integral part of the Christmas Holiday. It’s basically second in command next to Xmas Day’s Commander in Chief. Christmas Day is part 1 and Boxing Day is part 2.

Black Friday has turned up here because of making more money and profit, but usually reduces the amount of January sales period profits they found in the first couple of years although I don't know if that's still happening. Saw an article in the mail where they've been tracking prices over the year and as usual there's a lot of jiggery-pokery with prices going on, so that bargain maybe an illusion.

Very interesting! I’m usually in Florida when January sales start so haven’t been able to notice the big differences. That’s a really great point to watch for though. Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment.
