This week it's back to good old fashioned Learn Quick. I've always had an issue training for road cycling but rollers seemed to be right up my street. The allow the bike to move and do not require fixing the bike to train. However, they can be a little difficult to learn to mount and ride. Watch me struggle.

And another 10 seconds later. "There's a number of reasons why I hate this: First of all, the front wheel is sitting lower than it would on the road - so I'm kind of leaned forward And also, the bike is fixed." It's the fact that it takes X weeks to relearn the reverse-bike, then *another* X weeks to relearn a normal bike that pretty much ensures that he won't bother with any reverse-bike challenges at all; just way too time consuming. If he could learn riding both types interchangeably maybe, but who knows how long it would take to learn those type of reflexes

Glad to see that you made it up; rollers not only make it less boring, but they help maintain your balance skills, even more so than riding don't the road. Next season, try starting in a doorway, narrow hallway, or at least against one wall. experienced riders can start in the middle of the room, but beginners should start with some structure to hold onto as they wind up the wheels. track racers swear by rollers and that they help with the high cadence balancing skills that they need on the track.

For anyone watching to learn themselves who is confused as to WHY it kept rolling off: Whenever Mike put most of his weight on the handlebars the force on the front wheel to come off the roller became greater than the minimum force needed to push the rear wheel over the rearmost roller. i.e. the downward force on the front wheel pushed the back wheel off the last roller. Tl;dr: If you're trying this at home, don't lean on the handlebars before you've mounted at least one pedal.

Let me give a piece of advice for any out there wanting to give this a try. There is a much easier way to learn how to ride rollers, first, obtain a small step stool that is about 10 or 12 inches high. Next, put your rollers in between a doorway. This allows you to stand on the step stool and mount the bike, the doorway will allow you to remain vertical and inline as you put one foot into the pedal and begin to pedal, don't worry about clicking in with the other pedal at this point. The primary rule in riding rollers is no sudden swings with the handlebars, they must be dead straight ahead, if you feel you are drifting to one side or the other, a shift in your weight to the opposite side will correct that drift, the handlebars can stay straight. You will soon learn these shifts of weight are quite minute, the main goal is to get to the point of being able to fine tune your cycling technique so as to eliminate any extraneous movement, to be as efficient as possible. I always had my rollers about a foot from a wall to provide security, you could always lean against it in an emergency and I always had my footstool to make mounting a breeze. When you become proficient on rollers there is no better tool to refine your stroke, intervals are the key! One minute on and two minutes off, gradually working up to max effort with a series of cool down intervals. If you can maintain max effort for 1 minute while maintaining form that the rollers demand you will indeed get better, seeing the speedometer hit the mid 40s mph (52-13 gears at that time) for one minute and just trying to maintain the form necessary is indeed a challenge that you will be proud of!

It seems to me like having a target centered in front of you starting out would help tremendously. When I first learned to ride a bike, my parents said, "if you look down, you fall down." So I looked where I was going, not at my feet or the ground I was on. That's just my 2 cents on riding a bike. Look straight ahead.

Im a professional cyclist and i personally use the rollers when weather is not the best, so i can keep in track. If you wanna get started with them you should place yourself next to a wall, climb the bike and start from there, once you feel a litte more confident you can even do it without hands.

For anyone else learning, start close to a wall or something you can hold on to, make sure the front roller is under the middle of the front wheel, and look forward not down at the bars.

1-do not do this on a thick carpet 2-use a wall, doorway or counter to lean against when learning how they work, I know of no one who rides rollers in the middle of a room 3-the front wheel should be centered over the front roller or at the most 1cm behind the front roller center 4-I believe those rollers have some free float to them so they are a bit easier to learn and ride 5-rollers are great for smoothing out your pedaling, if you pedal in squares or have a mashing style the rollers will soon sort that out because you wont be able to ride them. Rollers also teach you to have a light touch on the handlebars and to let the bike steer rather than the riders having a death grip on the bars. 6-most people who try to learn how to ride rollers generally get advise, asking a friend or doing a search and learn in a few minutes. it really is much easier than this video makes it seem.

1 - probably would simplify things yes, but he managed to learn even with that extra problem... so... 2 - I know at least 2 people who do (Mike + the video of them being used in the middle of a garden he showed) 3 - You can see it was in the footage 4 - Eh, I think #1 kinda negates "bit easier" 5 - Seems irrelevant since he used the rollers just fine 6 - Hello, you must be new to Mike Boyd's channel, this is a channel about learning things on your own, both seeing his attempts and being entertained as well as to learn some things about *how to learn* and *not giving up*.
