I wonder if they realised it might be quite powerful to keep a respawned battleline unit off the board until T5 for the secret mission that is based on battleline units being in the right board position? By capping it at once you still can try to keep that unit in your back pocket but it costs you the benefit of using it earlier? Maybe, does seem quite random though

That's exactly how I thought the Crusher buff would work out: Old meta of focusing down a bug at a time makes you lose out on some critical VP now. But removing the bonus VP by chip damage only makes the bugs mad. That said, it does help play into the lore of this detachment by forcing opposing players to make that choice now. Also, have you tried an Ominous Presence Hive Tyrant + Tyrant Guard brick? Up to OC 14, and OC 8 when the TG are stripped away.

Rather than wondering if Zoanthropes + Neurotyrant should benefit from Big Guns Never Tire, the question should be: Why don't ALL psychic weapons get the Big Guns treatment? Why should you not be able to use psychic powers in melee? Does your brain just turn off? Currently "psychic weapon" is just a tag for a gun, but a tag that gives no bonuses and gives a load of penalties with the anti-psyker rules and the FNP vs psychic. The status of zoanthropes + tyrant should be the norm, not the exception. Effectively, it just means that your monumental psionic powers are at least as useful as a Pistol.

The chameleon flyrant was already pretty playable as well, but im pretty sure the best change is horms being s4, which is a lot more 5s to wound instead of 6s. Regarding Crusher Stampede: The OC boost actually helps with bringing in Carnifex units. Before the 2 man fex units couldn't benefit from the detachment because you couldn't get 'below half' for the +1 to wound and you needed to lose an entire carnifex to get the +1 to hit. But now this means a carnifex block has 10 OC until it loses a carnifex and then the remaining one gets +1 to hit. Unsure how much this would help but it actually allows carnifexes to be useful now.

I'm interested in seeing how this affects the armies' tournament performance, because I'm not convinced the buffs will outweigh the nerfs on a hyper-competitive level. They're definitely welcome improvements for more casual play, but I'm thinking about how that 1 Unending Swarm Nid list that won a major tournament is significantly worse off after all these changes. Edit: Maybe my gripe is more about how these buffs wildly swing the internal balance of Tyranid units, after forcing players into a relatively small number of viable builds since the start of 10th Edition. It's kind of ridiculous that Games Workshop went a year before they realized, "Oh yeah, I guess every melee attack in the army should have +1 Strength".

I agree. Most people seem to forget that a lot of the monsters are below S9 in their weapon profiles and/or have something like 3 attacks WS3+, meaning even with the buff you will get maybe 1 wound in with AP-2 or so. So the average dmg you can expect is something around 4. If the target doesn't have an invuln, FnP -1dmg, minus to hit etc. It will mainly help anti-infantry (especially things like Genestealers or Raveners) but anti-vehicle will still be a problem. With a bunch of armies having either their transports buffed or becoming more important since other things got nerfed and Knigths getting better this problem will only increase. I am also not sure how GW is expecting Nids to score mission points now with exploits like mines or returning gargoyles not working anymore. The Crusher Stampede buff is ridiculous in any competitive environment since it is gone as soon as you take a single wound of a model.. Sure, that triggers their main buff. But you are still not scoring the points.. so what good does it do? So as nice as the buffs are. The important things that decide over the overall performance are not really getting much better.

@Silverdragon83X I feel like auto-includes are symptomatic of bad internal balance. Ideally no unit should be so superior that its considered auto include. I think we're getting to a better place in general though by not relying on spore mines for easy points. I prefer a far more aggressive approach.

I think you're trying to compare leviathan scoring to pariah nexus here and it doesnt compare well at all. Biovores can still score a number of secondaries if thats what you want, at a reduced cost, Otherwise, there's now a number of secondaries that require whole turn actions to complete, which battleshocking can interrupt. Your opponent not scoring points can push a victory as much as you scoring points can. Tyranids have a plethora of ways to force battleshock tests outside of the normal sequences, and also now just have the damage to back it up when all else fails. Not to mention the viability of several units being thrown forward for list and detachment variation. This negativity to me seems so weird when you consider the dataslate as a whole - the VAST majority of strong armies in the game received sizeable nerfs to their own rules and datasheets, along with the same core rules changes, and nids are the second most buffed faction. We couldnt have asked for more that wouldnt have put nids into the stupid strong category imo.

  • @Errtuabyss

@@TyranidFerore 1/6 secondaries (3 out of 18) can be done with a Spore Mine, given it survives long enough to score. A Biovore is now 5 points less than a Lictor, which can do halve the secondaries just by free rapid ingress and have a reasonable survivability as an LoneOp with stealth. Point being that you don't get basically free secondaries with Biovores anymore, which makes them and with their dmg output being so low it is very debatable if it's worth taking them at all. Not unusable but lowering the scoring ability of Nids significantly (we where already winning by a thin margin and mainly of the exploits). That said: we do have units like the Lictor that will be good for scoring. So it's not like we are totally screwed all of a sudden. What you are not mentioning is that most of those forced BatSho tests are bound to specific units that haven't the greatest usability outside of that ability. Screamerkillers may be viable thanks to the Synapse str boost (they don't fit well into lists like vanguard so it has to be tried out), but in general it's either the 2 we where already using in almost every list or units that are still not that much better now and not worth taking just to force the test. Which isn't auto-failed either, even with the SitW buff. It helps but it's still not killing a unit and depending on a bad roll for most of our rules to do anything. Which is still a bit swingy for good competitive win-rates. The negativity is mostly at very specific points and bigger problems the faction has. The positives are much less relevant to the overall win-rates since it doesn't help as much with the problems as the negatives impact the options to win. Not saying the win-rate won't go up and it's good we had this update. This is mainly putting it into perspective, focusing on competitive play (which Discospawn was very specific about). Not being hyped about something doesn't mean you are negative. It's just being realistic about the probable impact on the competitive win-rates. I personally think, after the first month maybe (so after most of the wild testing phase is over), we will see Nids getting a few percentage higher win-rates, but it won't take them out of the lower third of all factions. Primary scoring is still hard if it depends mostly on BatSho do work (with Battleline Spam being much harder now) and secondaries won't be easier with all codex factions having 12" deep strike denials and we not having that many units that can jump somewhere, do actions and survive a turn. If you run a good Invasion Fleet or Vanguard list you are probably doing much better than before. If you run something random you will notice mainly a shift of what the problems you have to overcome are.

@@Trignama1 im Just realistic. We come into this Update hugely nerfed by the fact that we can no longer easily Score Points Turn 1 outside of vanguard. And at a much Higher Point Investment From Turn 2 onwards. So this alone would have probably dropped us down to a generous 40% winrate, because thats all we had, getting a bit lucky and clinging onto These Points and hopefully hold primary for Just long enough before getting wiped. So thats our starting Point Here. OFCOURSE the +1S in melee is a big Deal in many situations, and it probably will be enough to get us barely back to 45%.. but we will still be among the weakest armies. Some of the other changes are cute QoL, but no significant buff to our widely still overcosted army that have to Invest even more Points into scoring now. And having acess to a more reliable anti Tank unit is cute, but at 305pts I still dont See it beeing worth the take unless your already brought zoans, which are never played right now because how Bad and overcosted they are.. And we couple this with a devasting Nerf to swarm, and a harsh Nerf to Invasion fleets tankyness..

New Lord of Deceit (LOD) aura has raised some questions regarding are Stratagems played in the aura or when a unit is in reserve Example DENIZENS OF THE WARP DAEMONIC INCURSION - STRATEGIC PLOY STRATAGEM WHEN: Your Movement phase. TARGET: One Legiones Daemonica unit from your army that is arriving using the Deep Strike ability this phase. EFFECT: Your unit can be set up anywhere on the battlefield that is more than 3" horizontally away from all enemy models. RESTRICTIONS: A unit targeted by this Stratagem is not eligible to declare a charge in the same turn. Unlike a Stratagem such Rapid Ingress that specifically says TARGET: One unit from your army that is in Reserves. A number of Stratagems use the wording TARGET ...unit from your army that is arriving using the Deep Strike ability this phase. So does the LOD increase the CP of this stratagem if the unit is set up within 12" of the LOD? Views?

While all of these are nice buffs, I am worried that this still won't entirely fix things. Being able to vomit dice onto targets won't help if you don't have the AP to work with it, and a lot of tyranid units are still going to struggle against 3+s just in general function. Then again the +1S for synapse will drastically improve the monsters and units that actually have melee attacks to do so (and those tend to be big AP hitters as well), so guess we'll have to see.
