It was the National Assembly (the precursor to Napoleon) who imprisoned Cassini. There is one sidenote I would like to place next to the four generations thing: in those days, it wasn't uncommon at all for sons to take up the same profession as their fathers. If your father was a carpenter, you became a carpenter too, because he taught you all the tricks of the trade. So in that sense, four generations of Cassini's all being cartographers wasn't that unusual. Of course, that they all worked on one giant project for that long is pretty incredible.

In German, these two parts "die Karte (f.)" (the map) and "die Männer (m. pl.)" (the men) would be connected by a little 'n', a so-called interfix, so it have to be written and said as "Kartenmänner" and not "Kartemänner"

Would be great if you could explain the French cliché with the garlic’s collar, lads :) I’m french and know about it but other french viewers might not be aware of the context surrounding this folklore anecdot dating back from war :) Maybe a video would be a interesting idea, wouldn’t be? Anyway thank you for the story behind the triangles that have shrunk french territory :)

I think they are onions but either way, they come from Breton onion sellers (or Onion Johnnies) that came to Britain (especially Wales) wearing the blue and white striped shirt (marinière). These onion sellers usually had onions on a string as well which is where it comes from. Considering most British people would have only seen French people like this (during the 1830s to 1930s), the stereotypes of French people came from them.
