How did the Apostles Pray? . . .

Many have ideas about what it may have looked like when the Apostles gathered for daily prayer. In this episode of “THE FIRST 500 YEARS,” the Brothers actually mine the sources to reconstruct the prayer life of the Apostles.

Lol I don’t think there’s enough Church history nerds left on the earth. And if there are, God only knows why they haven’t tagged along with all of us yet.

I am so glad I found your channel. I have been feeling very conflicted about whether or not I should be a Catholic, but thanks to your work I am starting to more fully understand the Catholic faith and history.

About praying towards the East. You mentioned that it was done towards the sun, as symbolic of the coming of a new age (for Essenes) or Jesus for early Christians. Another reason is that the garden of Eden was in the East. St Basil "What writing has taught us to turn to the East at the prayer?… Thus we all look to the East at our prayers, but few of us know that we are seeking our own old country, Paradise, which God planted in Eden in the East."

Josephus writes that there were Essenes that preached on the temple, and live in the city, not all Essenes were sectarians.

So the Essene sect was tiered and made up those who lived “in the city” as normal citizens and those who took on the vocational route, living in the wilderness communes. In much the same way we see this with John the Baptist’s group- you have the Baptist himself, and perhaps some disciples who lived with him and emulated his prophetic lifestyle, and then those who lived normal lives but were characterized as “followers of John.” The man who provided the Upper Room, for instance, was most likely an Essene follower (drawing water by the Essene gate), though not one who had left “secular” life to live in the wilderness.
