How Did Scotland Yard Get Its Name?
'Scotland Yard' is a name that's been synonymous with policing and detective work for almost 200 years... but where does the phrase come from?
In this video we'll be heading to a quiet London street, close to Trafalgar Square, to find out!

Once again, Rob, you have cleared up a question that has plagued me for a long time: how did Scotland Yard get its name? As a retired police officer and an avid Anglophile, I have always pondered the origin of this title and you have again solved the mystery. New Scotland Yard was in "The Sweeney" intro, so I've seen it dozens of times. It's funny, New Scotland Yard was called that in 1890. "New" in Britain is a highly relative term. They should call the current location "the new new new Scotland Yard. "

The winter evening settles down With smell of steaks in passageways. Six o’clock. The burnt-out ends of smoky days. And now a gusty shower wraps The grimy scraps Of withered leaves about your feet And newspapers from vacant lots; The showers beat On broken blinds and chimney-pots, And at the corner of the street A lonely cab-horse steams and stamps. Another Sunday treat, many thanks! There's a fascinating and exhaustively researched book called 'Cutting Point' by Christer Holmgren which proposes that the police in the 1880s were wrong to rule out a link between the 'Jack The Ripper' murders and the 'Thames Torso Murders' - it's well worth a read. And as a cabbie, I wonder if you were ever aware of the routine by the American comedian Kit Hollerbach (UK-based, wife of the late Jeremy Hardy): she would talk about growing up in the States in the 50s & 60s on a diet of British TV and movies, especially crime thrillers - which made so much of an impression on her that the first time she ever visited London and got in a black cab she instinctively told the driver "Scotland Yard - and step on it!" 😉

Ha I! Lovely, lovely comment Tragicyouth, thank you! Jack the ripper was a copycat murderer. Mary Kelly's boyfriend was extremely jealous and after the original murder Mary Kelly stopped soliciting for a while. He used to read her the newspaper stories in order to try keep her off the streets. All the murders were within a street or two of her lodgings and she would have known the victims of the last one (Hanbury street is directly across the road). The increase in violence,I think is from his need to continually increase the fear factor, until he killed her

@@Robslondon - All the Look At Life shorts are on heavy rotation, it was on last week so will probably be back on in about a month.
Love the videos, Rob! They filmed some of Doctor Strange there too and HP 7 part 1! Also bits of Atonement and Skyfall 😊

Oh wow! I love its artwork, just had to include it ;-)
Fascinating video Rob. I guess from this and the previous video you have a very waterproof camera ... and a wetsuit. Portcullis House despite being new relative to its surroundings and a bit avantgarde really does seem to blend in with the area.

Ha ha, thanks Raymonde! I film with an iPhone, it’s very waterproof thankfully 😉
As a Scot, I felt obliged to watch this, but now I'm hooked. Well done, and your genuine London accent makes it even better. I have a genuine Glaswegian one. Can you fit that in anywhere??? 🤣🤣🤣

Lovely comment Isabel, thank you so much! My other half is Glaswegian 😉 One of favourite cities! Thanks again and stay well 🏴
As a broke LONDONER 🇬🇧💯 i would erdge everyone to give this man a drink, the fantastic facts he finds of London are very cool.. Unfortunately our police have performed terribly lately, i do hope there is still honour within the force 🆘 The 1888 incident myself believe was Jack laughing at them. The black museum, i wonder if the likes of Carrick and the murderer of the lady murdered from Clapham Common SARA EVERHARD are on show in the black museum ⚖️💯🆘 There have been many brave policeman that shouldn't be forgotten 🙏 so much history tarnished by secrets and lies... For shame.. Thank you Rob another job well done, REGARDS from South London 🇬🇧💯💪🗣️📢🆘
