    Slight correction, soviets did try to take out finland before the peace of 1944 but their offensive was stopped and they decided for peace instead (with the requirement that finland declares war on germany and push the 200k germans out of northern finland), thus relieving more troops to the invasion of germany

    It was a popular sentiment among some academic circles and kinda makes sense, since most of the people immediately across the border were still Finnic and spoke Finnic languages at the time, especially in the rural areas. If Germany (and Finland) won the war, it would have been only natural to incorporate the Kola Peninsula and all of Eastern Karelia save for the St. Petersburg area into Finland. Though, if Hitler completely razed St. Petersburg to the ground, then maybe even that area, Ingria and also Estonia could have been incorporated into an Even Greater Finland, so that all the Finnic peoples were in one state. In the wildest dreams of Greater Finland enthusiasts, you might even add Latvia and Lithuania since they also kinda have Baltic/Finnic heritage and also add everything between Finland and the Urals for good measure, since the few peoples who live there were also mostly Finnic or at least speak Finnic languages.

    @@Diego-og7nk Yes they occupied more land they lost during winter war, which is just logical to do because if you get pushed back you are not pushed back behind your old border right away. They also refused to advance further despite Hitlers demands to do so. We dont know if Finland would have gotten more land if they won the war with Germany, but in general Finnish people wanted to get back what they lost.

  • @rauliiitzio1573

    @rauliiitzio1573

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@Diego-og7nk I was just saying that to me its logical, no matter what the outcome was. Well who did know if they are going to succeed with operation barbarossa? Finland and Germany had common enemy but separate goals. Finland advanced in Soviets land, dug up and sit there for three years from 1941 to 1944 when finally Soviets pushed back, Finland was pushed back to winter war border where Soviets couldnt breakthrough so they decided to concentrate their troops against Germany in eastern Europe, showing their fighting effort here + not taking part of siege of Leningrad might have convinced Stalin to not invade Finland anymore, and it was known in Finland Soviets had never intended to leave their Finnish operation for Winter War, so invading Soviets could have been more strategic than wanting lost lands back, might have been even necessary for survival, because that what ww2 was for Finland, survival of the nation. However one thing i have heard also is that Finland wanted to get more land in a way it would make Finland easily defendable against further USSR invasions, so the borders would be between the three big water bodies between Finland and Soviets, so there would be as little land to invade trough as possible, and once Finland got to their old border, in Karelian Isthmus, 8 out of 16 infantry regiments had problems with mass refusals and the problem was similar all across the border, so Mannerheim used propaganda about Greater Finland to get the remaining soldiers to go further, i dont know how true that is, however there is an order given by Mannerheim where he writes this. “In the February of 1918, I promised to the Karelians of Finland and Viena that I would not put my sword to the scabbard Until Finland and East Karelia would be free. I swore this in the name of the Finnish peasant army trusting its brave men and sacrificing women. Twenty-three years have Viena and Aunus waited for the fulfillment of this promise; one and half a year has the Finnish Karelia after the honorable Winter War, as deserted waited for the dawn of morning. The fighters of the war of freedom, the reputional men of Winter War a new day has come. Karelia is rising, its own battalions marching in your ranks. The freedom of Karelia and Great Finland are sparkling in front of us in the massive torrent of world historical events. Let the fate guiding the fate of nations fulfill the promise I gave to the tribes os Karelia" Whether Finland did wrongdoings or not what it has to do with the subject? I dont honestly understand why you randomly brought it up. I mean probably no one will deny that, its a war where people do wrong doings on every side, Soviets and Germany did wrong doings 10000 times more than everyone else combined during ww2 lol. Sure its good to acknowledge but no one should feel guilt what happened 80years ago imo.

    It is very interesting, that language and DNA in Finland was existing and forming already 10000 years ago at stone age. Supported by archeology finds and DNA studies. And language has survived even under several hundreds of years of occupation from totally different language cultures (Swedes, Russians), but still nations own identity is only identified from 200 years or so. If the identity would be so short, how come the language people use survived so long periods of occupation? Unless there was already own nationality feeling existing before. It is quite clear Finns had own identity and nationality before, as they maintained their own language. Many occupation armies try to erase the past history and re-write the history of the territory. That could explain the absence of the written history. Only logical explanation is that Finnish identity and language existed before occupation times. They just did not just popup from nowhere.

    the finns were a bunch of tribes speaking different languages all across finland. there wasn't even a small glimmer of a country there. the nationalism started to grow only in the late 18th and early 19 centuries when people like elias lönnrot started building it. lönnrot went house to house travelling and staying at people's homes and learned their folksongs. he did this for so long until he had enough poems, songs and stories collected to piece together our national epic, the Kalevala. during the 1800s there lived other poets like runeberg who helped shape our sense of patriotism but the finnish identity isn't old at all. written finnish is only about 500 years old, spoken language is older but back then it consisted of dozens of dialects from people who migrated from all over eurasia. we as a country emerged from thin air and fought for our independence.

    Heh, heh. On two occasions Finland woud have made a move that would change the outcome of WW II: First: When encircling Leningrad (now again St Petersburg) Hitler twice and Göring onc asked Finland to join in taking Leningrad, thus freeing a vast amount of Wehrmacht forces to join Staingrad and then push Germany to take Baku oil Fields. Finland declined. Second: Germany asked Finns to cut the supply of Allied help from Murmansk, as almost half of Red Aermys arms, material and food from US & British convoys kept Red army functioning. To take Murmansk would have decided the outcome of was for Russians. Finland again declined the task, thereby making it possible to egotiate decen terms for peace in 1944. Finnish army generals knew already in 1943 that Hitler was going to lose the war

    Finland was not invaded in 1944 because it agreed on a ceasefire with USSR, and expelled former German allies from the country. Stalin, depleted of men at this stage of the war, took some strategic ground to protect access to Leningrad then focused on the German army. So after the end of the war, he could not play the trick of the "popular government" seizing power with Red Army support, as he did all over Eastern and Central Europe. All the more since the Finns were stauncly anti-communist after their civil war and Soviet failed invasion.

    The epicanthic fold and narrow eyes in Finns and Sami is a genetic mutation that happened independently from Asians among the stone age population around the Baltic which was there before both Indo-Europeans and Uralic people. The only reason it is more common among Finns and the Sami is that both have been genetically isolated and had a very small ancestral population, which has led to unknown inbreeding between distant relatives.
