Another added note is that the Teller Amendment was passed by Congress because many congressmen were in the sugar industry and were afraid Cuban companies would start competing with them, along with the fact that Cuba was mostly Catholic and Hispanic which made the American upper class uneasy. They thought it was better to incorporate a territory like the Philippines that was farther away and unlikely to become a state; “out of sight, out of mind”

That’s still the reason they oppose the annexation of Puerto Rico. If it become a state, Puerto Rico would have more political power than half the states in the US due to its population. Republicans would never allow that. It would shift the spheres of power in the US forever.

It was under the last Puerto Rican governor, who was Republican, that they even had a statehood vote. Puerto Rico also has a non voting state delegate in Congress that’s Republican, not Democrat. The Democrat Party chooses not to give statehood for Puerto Rico. They are focusing on trying to give statehood for Washington DC instead

The last line is funny, 'The United States gave Cuba it's independence'. These transplanted Spaniards, didn't wanted to be part of the Spanish empire. Nor did they wanted to change their Overlord to the United States. The United States would have had a difficult military operation, trying to suppress a pushback from the new county of Cuba. @@ravensfan777 that's a mistake and has nothing to do with language. I bet you don't even know the origin of the word "America". For your information, America (the continent)is named after Amerigo Vespucci, the Italian explorer who set forth the then revolutionary concept that the lands that Christopher Columbus sailed to in 1492 were part of a separate continent. And for your information, Columbus didn't even sent foot in North America where the united States is located!

Find a bridge & learn uour history, because to reasons that shock even me; no, American Leadership did NOT want to annex Cuba. Because it's pretty obvious we would have had we wanted to. We wanteda world power our of The American Super-Continent, Monroe Doctrine. While backbenchers in American Congress did argue for Cuban annexation, The Presidential figures & leaders in Gov't & Military did not want Cuban annexation. Teddy Roosevelt specifically fighting NOT to annex Cuba i imagine won't even compute with you but that's the truth. Cuba would've stayed a Spanish Colony without American-Spanish War. We didn't invade Cuba, we invaded Spain. Then we granted Cuban independence while annexing every other colony.
