How Did Brian May Design His Red Special Guitar?

Музыка

In 1963, because they could not afford to buy a suitable instrument, Brian May and his father Harold took an innovative and practical approach to designing a new type of electric guitar. Later dubbed "The Red Special", neither of them could have predicted that ten years later it would become as famous as Brian himself. In this video, I explore an urban myth in the Brian May Red Special enthusiast community that they drew around various household objects to form the basic outline and features of the guitar. Like all good urban myths, it might have an element of truth to it so watch the video and decide for yourself.

I have ALWAYS wondered how Brian designed the body shape of that guitar! The bottom bout was just drawn round an oval plate - genius! Thanks for the insights.

Don't take what I have presented in this video literally. It addresses an urban myth regarding drawing around pieces of a dinner service which is plausible I suppose, and illustrates general manual sketching and draughting techniques of the era that they are likely to have deployed.

Hello, I've been browsing through some of your videos, haven't watched all of them yet, so sorry if you have answered this question before, but I want to know; Do you know what type of glue did Brian May use on his original Red Special project? I started my own homemade guitar project this month (not a Red Special replica, but heavily inspired by Brian May's story and design), and I was planning to use the traditional animal hide glue, but I'm still pretty curious about the original build and also how you did it with your replica

Brian used Cascsmite and standard two part cold cure epoxy resin. I recommended using modern adhesive formulations such as Titebond aliphatic wood glue. [I have a PhD in Chemistry so this is my judgement.]

@@dsgb Interesting! I was considering animal hide glue because I have classical background in music, and I know they use this in classical acoustic instruments, but I was very unsure about a modern electric instrument Thank you for the advice, I'll use the Titebond as you recommend, pretty nice to meet a PhD in chemistry, have a great day

I'm sure vintage options such as animal hide glue and Cascamite will be fit for purpose. However, I can personally recommend Titebond aliphatic wood glue because I have used it successfully on my projects. 👍🏻😀

@@dsgb I'll use Titebond since it is a semi-acoustic electric guitar, I believe it will be stronger and work better for this project. Thank you for the advices!

Do an internet search for A0 imperial graph paper. I got mine from an Amazon seller in the U.K. but currently (February 2024) KamokuCreative sell it on Etsy and U.K. eBay. Three sheets for £23.79.
