How did Bosnia become 50% Muslim?
Bosnia and Herzegovina is a country in the Balkans tucked neatly between Croatia, Serbia, and Montenegro and essentially surrounded by Roman Catholics and Eastern Orthodox Christians. Within Bosnian borders, roughly half of the population is Muslim

Similar conversions to Islam occurred in Bulgaria too, although in a much smaller scale. In fact, a small part of the Bulgarian Bogomils/Paulicians, who were considered heretics by the Orthodox church, embraced the Catholic fate in the 16th-17-th century. Even today there are two small municipalities with a predominant Catholic population - one in North Bulgaria (Belene) and one in South Bulgaria (Rakovski). As to the Muslim Bulgarians, they represent probably about 1% of the modern Bulgarian population. And last but not least, there were various attempts for re-Christianization of the Muslim Bulgarians but there was never a consistent state policy in this direction. What seems to have worked, was the atheist propaganda during the Communism, which affected all religious communities in Bulgaria.

Bosnians had probably accepted Islam due to a combination of factors. Obviously tolerance was one of them, but also many sources claim one of the tenets of the Bosnian church was that they refused to worship the cross, seeing it as bizarre that other Christians worshipped that which had killed Jesus (and some even debate on whether or not they believed Jesus was God or just a prophet of God). This is much closer to Islamic belief, so perhaps the change was not so radical for Bosnians.

Also that city gave 5.Corps .. a military unit that was known for biggest and baddest battles in 90's war and gave many heroes and defended the city from a planed genocide. It defended occupied city for 3 years with homemade weapon and improvised water pipe guns. U should visit it one day. The whole Krajina region, western Bosnia is the part of the country that breeds finest of warriors. Even the uprising against Ottoman rule came from that part, city of Cazin, and it was successful. Cheers from a proud Bosniak 😀

Katolici su bili većina do kraja 17 stoljeća kada se iz Bosne povlači E. Savojski i Šokci sele u Slavoniju. Kasnije su pravoslavci većina a u globalu kršćani su uvijek bili većina pa tako i danas.

Finally a truthful and an academical video with no affiliations to anyone about the nation of Bosnia. I have been a subscriber to this channel for over 2 years now, and to see a video about my own country is really something worth experiencing. What nation of Bosnia? Do you mean those that were brought from all over Ottoman empire or the natives? Natives mostly carry Serbian orthodox last names. There were so many migrations in Bosnia, Montenegro, Serbia and back. After each rebellion, people would move to another ottoman province. The best part of the Bosnian saga is that even administrative lines changed over time. That means that parts of today's Croatia and Serbia were in Bosnia.

This is pretty big for a local citizen when you think about it in those ages. A foreign "heathen" head of state conquers you and address you in your language about your rights. They still commemorate him today.

Doesn't have anything to do with that. Mehmed II spoke i think 5 languages fluently and one of the languages was Serbian. Anwers in Bosnia lays in Hungarian wish to conquer those lands for very long time, constant crusades against them as recognized from both denominations as heretics (check for Bogumils) and finally for the rulers of Bosnia who shifted to islam before the rest of the people.

Definitely would be huge difference if you have a conquerer which speaks your language then some Hungarian who wants to impose his rules. Just wanted to point out that doesn't have anything to do with their transfer to Islam. At least not immediately. For example the last Bosnian king was killed by Mehmed II in person. He personally cut his head. Didn't mean anything to Bosnian king that Mehmed II was speaking Serbian in that moment. 😁

I live in Bosnia and this is literally what we learn about how Islam came to Bosnia as well. It's not much different really, except our teacher used to tell us that Bosnian church wasn't really similar to Catholic and Orthodox churches of the time. Apparently Bosnian church denied trinity, also did not pray towards a cross, and did not allow church hierarchy that was present in other churches. So like the way it was explained to me was: Bosnian church definitely stemmed from Christianity, but it had some major differences that made it qualify as heretics. Also they absolutely despised the practice of "indulgence", aka paying to the church so that they suffer less in hell- which was practiced in Christianity. Plus, Bosnians didn't really pray the way Christians did, there isn't any specific rituals that can be pointed out really. They also didn't care much about religion in the first place apparently.. According to what my professor said, the prayer was more of a "talking to God" type of thing? Along with all that, the constant pressure which you mentioned also made people of Bosnia "cold" towards Christianity. Considering also Islam had many similarities to the Bosnian church (at the time), with the "incentive to convert" rather than force, I think was enough to "soften" many Bosnians towards Islam. According to what I've also heard, Ottomans would kidnap non-Muslim kids for janissaries- but Muslim Bosnians would go on to join janissaries themselves very often. Like families would send their sons while kids to train with janissaries. I am a Muslim (my family really has entirely Montenegrian roots), and I have heard stories by my grandparents about their elders (there is a lot about my family that was written and told to others) going to Istanbul for either military education voluntarily, or just simply going to serve the army, or go get education. I'm not sure how correct all of it is, there isn't much to talk about when it comes to Bosnia as there isn't many records. P.S.: Watch out for the Serbs, Croats and Bosniaks in the comments trying to say ban Kulin or king Tvrtko was either of those. One of them is Bosnian bogumil, other Bosnian catholic. Go on and fight until your fingers fall off from typing.

  • @personaldove

I disagree with that. The Ottoman policy was divide and rule. They would Islamize certain regions of the Balkans like in Greece, Bosnia, Albania and Bulgaria to ensure that their vassals had control over the nomadic Christians. No Christian family willingly sent their sons to Constantinople. By that logic all the Uyghur muslims voluntarily gave their children to Chinese Maoists who took them to Beijing to become great officers.

Pope Leo X called Croatia the Antemurale Christianitatis (Croatian: Predziđe kršćanstva) in 1519 in a letter to the Croatian ban Petar Berislavić, given that Croatian soldiers made significant contributions in war against the Ottoman Empire. The advancement of the Ottoman Empire in Europe was stopped in 1593 on Croatian soil (Battle of Sisak), which could be in this sense regarded as a historical gate of European civilization. Nevertheless, the Muslim Ottoman Empire occupied part of Croatia from the 15th to the 19th centuries. However, Pope Leo X wasn't the first that gave Croatia such a title. The nobility of the southern Croatian regions sent a letter to Pope Alexander VI and Roman-German emperor Maximilian I on April 10, 1494 seeking help against the Ottoman attacks. In that letter Croatia was for the first time called bastion and a bulwark of Christianity: We have been blocking this force (Turks) for almost seventeen years wasting our bodies, lives and all of our goods, and like the bastion and a bulwark of Christianity we daily defend Christian countries, as much as it is humanly possible. That is why we are telling you this: If we get defeated by the Turks, then they might be able to remove Christianity from Croats. When Turks conquered Constantinople in 1453, Pope Callistus III urged all Christians to the Crusades. Many Croats, led by Saint John of Capistrano, were part of the army that defeated 150,000 Turks at the Siege of Belgrade in 1456.When Belgrade was conquered by the Turks in 1521 many Croatian writers and diplomats pointed out the dramatic situation by stating that Belgrade was the bastion of Christianity, the key to Europe and the fortress of the entire Kingdom of Hungary. In the following year, German Parliament in Nuremberg called Croatia Zwingermaurer (Fortress) and the Austrian Archduke Ferdinand of Habsburg said that "chivalrous Christian nation of Croats is standing as a shield in front of Styria, Carinthia and Carniola, and the whole of Central Europe and Western Christendom." At the session, Prince Bernardin Frankopan asked for help, recalling that "Croatia is a shield and door of Christianity". Fran Krsto Frankopan stated on July 1, 1523 in the memorial to the Pope Adrian VI that Croatia is a "bulwark or door of Christianity, and especially bordering countries of Carinthia, Carniola, Istria, Friuli, and Italy". Croatian baroque poet Vladislav Mencetić wrote in 1665: Italy would have sunk into the deep waves from slavery if the Ottoman sea hasn't been streaking into the Croatian seashore. In the nearly 400-year-long war against the Ottoman Empire, many Croatian warriors and heroes became known for their merits. Some of them were: * Marko Skoblić, Defender of Zemun who was tied and thrown under an elephant because he refused to convert to Islam and to become loyal to the Ottoman Empire * Petar Berislavić, Croatian ban who received a blessed sword and a hat from the Pope Leo X in 1513 as a gift for the great victory in the Battle of Dubica * Petar Kružić, captain from Senj who defended the Fortress of Klis for 15 years * Nikola Jurišić, Croatian nobleman who stopped 140,000 Suleiman's troops which were going to conquer Vienna * Croatian Ban Nikola IV Zrinski who saved Pest with only 400 Croatian soldiers and in 1566 in the Siege of Szigetvár with 2.500 Croatian soldiers stopped Suleiman I's army with over 100,000 soldiers in their attempt to conquer Vienna and all of Europe

Very accurate from a global point of view, but its a long story about bosnian church as some professors call they "Frist protestants in Europe". Bosnian church has stay againt the High taxes that church east and west had, also they belive that church has to be poor, because of that they built mainly small churchs of wood, and so on... Many interesting things!

Man i think in is not because of the church. Many muslims were slayed or forcebly converted to cristianity after fall of the Ottomans and rise of the independent Cristan states. And in that time muslims in Bosnia were saved by AH with their tolerance.

Well, those Bosnians obviously were not slaves and knew how to defend themselves even against mighty medieval empires. I heard that the real reason why they converted to Islam is that Ottomans brought a whole brunch of business to Bosnia - handiwork, craft, trade, construcion etc. and payed the Bosnians well for their work, while the Pope and the Byzantines just wanted to convert them to their churches by force. That's why Bosnians sympathized with the Ottomans and Islam - they finally achieved peace, wealth and order after centuries of hard imposed catholic and orthodox repressions.

@@mamojebac111 yes the language that had the first south slavic dictionary, made by Muhamed Havaji Uskufi in 1631. Instead of larning history from croatian and serbian wikipedia pages you should read a couple of legit sources and look at history more objectively. Bosnian was the official language in the country even at the start of Austro Hungarian rule. You can still find school books from that era.
