*Nero:* Easy to pick up but has a ton of complexity hidden under the surface that only shines after learning how to perfectly time Exceed and knowing how to take advantage of every DB. *V:* He is there and can be uh, fun? But definitely made for beginners. *Dante:* made for highly-skilled players to shine and show off the skills they have honed after dozens of hours of practice. Incredibly overwhelming to learn for new players to use. *Vergil:* You are the boss fight. The "enemies" are more like living punching bags that only exist for you to obliterate. The ultra-efficient version of Dante with maximum firepower for little set-up. Also, Judgement Cut. Want to delete a boss fast? Hell on Earth. Want everything to disappear right away? Doppelganger + SDT + perfect judgement cuts = utter annihilation

I'm so glad this video is Dante focused. I love Vergil, but I'm a little sad that he's overshadowed Dante so much recently. Dante is the foundational component of the entire series and he's one of the most mechanically complex playable characters ever. The skill ceiling is endless.

Even as a somewhat experienced player, I still can't say I understand DMC5 Dante and completely forget that certain moves exist. But I can say that Vergil is much more streamlined Dante, even though they look the same at the first glance. The main difference is that Dante has all his style moves and different weapon forms, in addition to his basic moves for each of his 4 ranged and melee weapons (which I think makes saying Dante has 10 different melee weapons and 6 guns to be more accurate). But Vergil just has 3 melee weapons and each weapon has a specific purpose (Range, Damage, and Speed). His summoned swords (guns) also use the same special inputs as the melee weapons and no weapon has any stance change mechanics (though you could argue Beowulf with it's charging), which makes each weapon's moves easier to use. Besides the super moves, concentration only gives boosts to certain attributes of weapons that benefit their specific purpose. I'd even argue Vergil is easier to understand and use than Nero, considering all the shenanigans with devil bringer punches, devil breakers, and exceed/max act, especially considering you have 20 whole missions compared to about 7 each for the others. I hope this helps if you want to understand Vergil better.

There is still Doppleganger and Sin DT to take into consideration, when you get to a higher skill level with Vergil you’ll start to utilise Sin DT cancels and to know what to use with it when, and with Doppleganger yeah just blast that when you need an easy escape or want to spam judgement cuts

  • @NarrowSpark96

    @NarrowSpark96

True, but I'd say he's still the "simplest" character at lower levels. Dante has move overload and a variety of mechanics. Nero has Exceed, Devil Breakers, and Bringer Knuckle, all of which have pretty tight timing or unique properties. And V is just different from everyone else. Vergil has concentration and doppelganger, both of which are relatively straightforward to use even if they're hard to master. I'll differ to your judgement on Vergil's complexity though, because I'm not an expert by any means. I only have a little under 100 hours.

Even now I mostly just use the sword and the punching weapons because I love any boxing style in video games, but it's so insanely satisfying to actually use all three beginner friendly styles at what I feel is a pretty good skill level (forget Royal Guard, though, I spend enough time learning counter timing in Yakuza to even begin learning it for a whole other series). Oh, and after the post game Nero can use the Devil Breaker again, so have fun using that in combat as well

If you've ever played an old MMO called Elsword, there's a chance you might have played as the character "LuCiel", which is actually two characters in one that you switch between constantly during gameplay. After a while, you start to realize that instead of thinking of it as learning to play two characters, it's better to think of it as swapping between "modes". This is the first thing that came to mind for me the first time I played Dante in DMC5, which I actually played before DMC3 and DMC4. The learning curve for both of these things is very similar in how you should be approaching it. Information overload is very easy to fall into, but don't let the wide range of options intimidate you. Think of it as charting out a map. There's a lot of ground to cover, but you can do so at your own pace. Whatever parts of his toolkit resonate with you best and you feel like you do best with, stick to that at first and just really get familiar with that part of his toolkit specifically. This is going to be the starting point of your "map" from which you expand on later. Once you've got that familiar homeground to start from, slowly start working more things into your combos. Experiment around, find something neat, and start learning more little by little, expanding your knowledge of what does what and what can combo into what and etc. Don't rush it, let everything come to you naturally at your own pace. As you slowly start to expand your range of familiarity with what the character can do, you'll start to feel more ideas for what can work together with what, and you'll gradually see your skill level improve as you work more and more of his toolkit into your playstyle. Technically, the "correct" way to learn Dante is to play DMC3, then 4, then 5, as his toolkit slowly grows from game to game, but not everyone is going to have access to that and it can form some bad habits anyway. I think it's better to just slowly map out his capabilities in your brain, expanding your knowledge of his toolkit and working more and more of it into your playstyle at your own pace.

Dante is the devil hunter simulator, he is easy to play but the most difficult to master, but also the most satisfying when played right. Pulling him off right shows you how strong Dante really is. Vergil on the other hand is the epitome of power. Difficulty is thrown out of the window and your job is to be the most badass character in video games. Extra points for only walking and teleporting. I play Vergil when I just wanna be a badass, and Dante when I wanna be skillful.

Hey man, just found ya thanks to the algorithm. I honestly felt the same when it came to Dante even when I knew he would be complicated as hell for newcomers. However, I eventually got more used to the character even if I'm certainly not a pro with him yet. Just try to be patient with yourself and keep experimenting, that's my advice for ya. One last thing to note, I'll be honest in my opinion Vergil is a bit more fun to play than Dante and I see him as less complicated than Dante mostly because he doesn't have as many weapons as Dante and doesn't have multiple styles. The concentration meter looks daunting, but think of it as another style meter, when you get better with the character you have a higher concentration which equals more damage and speed. He also seems to be more friendly towards people that want to practice combos in my opinion. But hey, that's just my two cents, good luck with your devil hunting!

The secret to improving is just trying every move individually and using them mid battle a few times or in practice mode individually and see how it can work with other moves until you memorize it. Literally just one thing at a time, and then remembering to apply what you learned constantly as you go forward. This is really the secret to improving at anything in life actually, and that is how the pro players get to their skill level. Games like this are just as refined as fighting games, so its going to take extra time and patience to really improve. Trying to do everything at once right off the bat is going to be super overwhelming like you mentioned.

For peeps who struggle playing as Dante in DMC 5, my best tip as someone who went through the same mess too, go play the first and third game. Both games help you on how to understand Dante's style and by then, it becomes second nature. I did it and went back to play as Dante again in five and everything clicked, I understand now why Dante is the legendary devil hunter.

Always good to see people get into dmc5 and fall in love with it This game is just absolutely fucking incredible, the combat feels so good, characters are fun and the story, if you know the context, does actually quite hit in some areas and makes dmc4 nero MUCH better. How you described Dante, man I feel that, he feels a big sluggish when you can't play him right but once you get into it, holy fuck he feels incredible. Style switching, weapon switching, using your entire arsenal for a combo, it just flows together so well and it isn't just thrown at you, you gradually get full access so you have time to get familiar with everything and once you digested everything you can start to really experiment and see just how much Dante allows you to do (I can't jump cancel though) Some months ago I did a dmd run, remember struggling with son of sparda vergil and Urizen, but dmd was a different beast, I ultimately beat son of sparda vergil without any buffs and it felt to amazing, then dmd fucking wrecked me, but I wanna try it again cuz it's so much fun

coming from a new player, heres what i think about each charcater's gameplay nero: great idea, good execution. the customization that the devil breakers bring is super nice. he is easy to get a decent grasp on. i dont enjoy his gameplay personally, but its mainly nitpicks. dante: love him. the styles are fun as hell and each weapon is enjoyable to use. they all have a clear purpose and his SDT is one of the best things in the game V: people complain about him, but i enjoy his gameplay. he's the only character i comfortably taunt with. the familiars have lots of keybinds to memorize though vergil: best gameplay ive ever experienced, period. absolutely perfect, i couldn't find a complaint if i tried. shame he overshadows everyone though :,) edit: just gonna tack this on, i was completely in my comfort zone with dante's arsenal, because im a warframe player and im used to it.

Now I am not a veteran at this game, but I will say im somewhat experienced. And if theres one thing that makes me the happiest, its seeing new players get into dmc. I thought your video was great, and I'm so glad you enjoy the game.(dmc5 is my favourite game of all time for sure.) Anway I just wanted to say that Dante is a very skill based character. hes got all sorts of weapons and styles, it can be very intimidating. Even for somehow who plays alot of dmc 5, I still struggle with dante. I usually find myself playing nero more. Another thing I wanted to poitn out, was Vergil isn't as hard as you think. He has 3 weapons yes. But they have similar inputs and can learned pretty easily, except judgement cut perfect release. And Vergil's concentration gauge is reallyjust a passive buff to his attacks and gives him blocks against minor attacks. It does unlock moves for dt. but they arent hard to imput. Now finally I wanted to recommend playing dmc 3 first. as its the canonically the first game in series, and the dante gameplay is very digestable and more beginner friendly imo. Anyway sry for the long combat, I hope you enjoy dmc further!

I'ma be real, dude: Ive been playing DMC5 for over a year now. I'm experienced in the art of the Crying Devil. I haven't got a fucking clue how to fight with Dante properly. And y'know what? I'm okay with that. Few quick tips about Vergil: Concentration meter isn't as complicated as it seems. As you hit enemies and fail to be hit in return, your meter fills. This makes your attacks more powerful, and allows you to perform certain finisher moves with each weapon. Your gun attacks throw summoned swords at your enemy, and the animation for it is completely independent of Vergil himself. You can shoot at enemies without interrupting your melee attacks, allowing you to deal even more damage. His Devil Trigger summons the doppelganger you saw him use in the last two missions. This is extremely useful as it mimics your entire Yamato moveset, is literally invincible, and can focus on other enemies while you something else. His SDT is functionally the same as Dante or Nero's base Devil Trigger. Enhances your attacks even further, adds new twists to existing moves, gives you health regen, and gives you access to extremely powerful finisher moves (namely Judgement Cut End, Deep Stinger, and Hell On Earth). You can choose to expend your entire Concentration Meter to summon V and his familiars, who will all fight on your behalf while you do... literally anything else. It also heals you for a goodly amount of your health depending on how much concentration you had when you expended it, so that's nice. Judgement Cuts are Vergil's bread and butter, and learning the timing to execute multiple consecutive ones is literally the key to mastering him. It's the single best way to build up Concentration and DT. You can have both your Doppelganger and SDT active at the same time, and both of you can execute JCs. While in SDT, for every normal JC you would've done, 3 will hit 3 different enemies each, and your Doppelganger can add another on top of that, making a grand total of 4 Judgement Cuts, each rapidly building your Concentration and allowing you to use your finishers more easily. Vergil's signature style is modeled on Dante's Trickster style, but has elements of Nero's Wire-/Hell-bound ability as well.

It's pretty interesting to hear someone try out Devil May Cry for the first time, and try to comprehend what you can do with Dante. I got into the series this year, but I started with the Switch version of 3. Difficult as that game can be sometimes, I feel it does a better job easing you into Dante's moveset compared to 5, which kinda just dumps this complex character onto a new player and expects everything will click. One of the best decisions the series made was to heavily reward variance with the rankings. You're given a huge toolbox to work with, and the game expects that you'll utilize it. So many action games fall into the trap of having "best combo" to repeat ad nauseum, and I'm so happy that DMC gracefully avoids it. I have so much fun learning and trying out new moves and combos, and I know I still have a lot of ways to go before pulling off the stylish attacks more experienced players have pulled off.

As a V fan, a cool combo that’s easy to use is Griffon’s flank. Shadow’s attacks on airborne enemies. Then use the back flip move to keep them in the air. Also the ability to control Nightmare by jumping on his back and firing lasers like the goddamn Death Star is just awesome. V is underrated

As someone who's recently got into DMC, the thing that humbles you the most is when you land a "good" combo and you feel good about yourself, thinking you improved, then do the deadly mistake of looking up a combo guide (This is even more prominent on Dante). Thats it, all your happiness goes away, u just saw someone with probably 3000 hours do a combo with moves you didn't even know existed.

ye, these games are great replay's for that reason. i always get the most buck of it all once I do dante must die difficulty. first playthrough on normal and it's you getting accustomed to the new moves, mechanics and rythms, 2nd on hard is you getting it and by the end feeling like a master. and then 3rd on dante must die, is you as a badass being challenged by other badasses as to who is more of a badass.

Devil May Cry 5 was my first ever dmc game and I gotta admit dante was a hell hole for me. he had 4 different weapons and 4 different guns and so I decided to just practice a bit in the void with dante for like a couple of hours and when i felt confident I went in and I noticed an immediet change, I also looked up tutorails and I just started just going left to right destroying enemies and getting some sick ass combo's and the thing is that once you beat dmd it is a lot easier since you will have the super characters which will help you if you go a bit to the void or the bloody palace have fun with them and they can also help you learn some mechanics because they remove the frustraition of the guages and stuff and once I felt confident I just started praticing more and more untill i could pretty much become like a very good dante player and then i practiced nero (he is a walk in the park) and then vergil who was very fun and honestly i enjoy him more then dante as is A LOT MORE SIMPLER and ye it isn't as bad as you think since you don't have to use all of the weapons for ez if you don't like a weapon you can easily remove it because that is the beuty of dante. There is no existing play style for dante since YOU ARE THE PLAYSTYLE you decide how you play or how you beat enemies and soon enough once you get like 600+Hours like I do you can pretty much just do everything with dante and should be able to learn all of his technique's

for dante you gotta know what all the styles do to your weapons or you'll just mess up the inputs, I'd say that's the most important part to learning him cause at least you'll get an attack if you're in the right stance

I mean..... Like I know there are different learning curves and I've recently started getting into DMC with DMC3SE but damn.... After Finishing DMC3SE as Dante it feels weird to think people don't get how Dante works sometimes. I personally didn't experience any information overload, just a lot of awe. I was experimenting with Cerberus and Agni and Rudra getting SSS combos with Swordmaster and Trickster after I got the hand of it.... Which took me a couple minute.

3 being so much limiting compared to 4 and 5 is the reason why it doesn't feel that way. You can only select one style at a time as well as only 2 weapons and guns with each having much less moveset options than 5 especially. Playing with fewer systems and mechanics just eases the transition period and allows the player to play within the confinements of the rules.

Dante i have a similar but diffrent problem i use every move and sometimes i stumble changing weapons and styles and i do the wrong thing or i wait to long and i get hit playing as vergil was a cakewalk honestly his teleports get him out the way pretty easily keep using summoned swords or mirage blades and you instantly get access to his supers its insta kill and utterly destroys bosses and put them at middle health most of the time but you need to spend on him I suggest he'll on earth with beuwoulf v has a side role which is invincible till the animation done and gets him out the way so shadow and griffon can do their work and summon nightmare as a last line of defense then nero also use your side roll and make sure you have your exceed and pick good devil arms like ragtime helkter skelter punch line overture sweet surender which grants health

If anyone is watching this video and is also having trouble with Vergil, it's quite simple learning how to defeat him. First of all, throw the Devil Sword in the trash. It is not very good in this fight unless you're good in this fight. Much easier using any other weapon. Don't use Kalina. Takes to long to use it. One thing I found that made it easier was to only attack when Vergil just got done with an attack. Don't melee if he's too far, though. Same goes for the fight in Vergil's campaign. These are some combos that helped me through; Using just King, do the normal combo, just keep hitting melee, then, when you launch Vergil into the air, use Ice Spike, then Revolver, but keep holding melee during Revolver, then, with the right timing, release melee and you'll zap Vergil before he could teleport or block it. I also had trouble in Vergil's campaign, but I easily found out a new combo for him. Melee four times, Upper Slash 2, Aerial Rave B but not the final melee, Aerial Cleave while continuing to hold melee, release at the right time and you'll instantly release a Judgement Cut, then just smack Dante a big if he doesn't get flung by the Judgement Cut. Also, for the fight as Nero, don't mess around, Nero ain't good in general, so, my advice, just use a Buster when you can. Don't bring a Buster Arm Devil Breaker because you literally get free, unbreakable Busters during and after the final fight
